FISHERY DESCRIPTION: The River Suck is regarded as an excellent
mixed fishery. The Upper Suck is a particularly good wild brown trout
fishery, with trout averaging 0.75lbs. It is a rich limestone water
and has very good fly hatches.
The fishery fishes best during early season to May. After this time
the river tends to weed up quite badly. The area described here as the
'Upper River Suck' extends from
Castlerea to Ballymoe.
There are some nice sections which are
suitable for trout fishing. Noted stretches are from the bridge on the
Castlerea - Kilkelly road downstream past Castlerea, Cloondacarra
Bridge, Willsbrook Bridge, Frenchlawn Bridge and on to a little
downstream of Laragh Bridge. Drainage works were undertaken some years
ago and banks tend to be high and somewhat steep in places, so due
care should be exercised while negotiating some sections. There is
another section which is noted as a good trout fishing area located
downstream of Donamon Bridge in the River Suck Valley. There is also
fishing upstream of Castlecoote Bridge with access on the right bank.
Early season can be good upstream and downstream of Mount Talbot
Bridge.
Fly hatches are typical of any Irish River on a
limestone base. Fly hatches can be prolific. For the energetic angler
a day spent early in the year can yield a few nice wild brown trout
for those who are willing to put the effort in and to walk and explore
the water.
