Reports - Shannon River Basin District

Trout caught by regular angler to the lake, Michael Kelly, Balbriggan,
Co Dublin.
GOOD TROUT FISHING REPORTED ON OUR
MIDLAND LAKES
Few anglers fished Lough Sheelin last
week. Those who fished the lake reported good fishing, including this
feature trout of the week of 8lbs caught by regular angler to the
lake, Michael Kelly. There was some good trout fishing
reported on Lough Ennell when conditions were favourable and this is expected to continue for the
remainder of the season, weather permitting. Lough Owel has also
fished quite well. There has been a good rise of fish on Lough
Derravaragh and the lake is reported to be full of Daddies with some
good fish caught. Angling conditions have been unsuitable on
Lough O'Flynn with high floods. Athlone Anglers
Association reports on the trout competition for the Wykes/Gaffey
Memorial Cup which took place last Sunday on Lough Ree.
The Mulkear River didn't come up to
expectations, considering all the high water during the week. Anglers had
to fish hard to catch the odd Salmon. The River Feale fished well
midweek with
good runs of Salmon into the system. Successions of floods over recent
days is hampering the Salmon fishing though. Water levels are expected to
settle down in the coming days with drier weather on the way and
fishing should pick up in the improving conditions. TIGHT LINES!
NB: Anglers please be reminded that
there is only one Salmon per day allowed in September, subject to the
total allowable catch. Also Shrimp and Prawn fishing for Salmon is not
permitted in the waters of the Shannon Region.
MulkearLife Project: Anglers
please be aware that the second talk in the new Autumn 2010 series
of illustrated talks by the MulkearLIFE project will take place
tonight @ 8pm in Cappamore Community Centre, Cappamore, Co. Limerick.
See full report for details.
Lough Sheelin, Co Cavan
Week Ending Sunday September 12th, 2010
Not many anglers ventured out on the lake during the week although
for those who did fishing was good. A lot of fish were observed
rising , particularly around Church Island. Most fish were released.
35 fish were recorded for the week.
Best Catches:
Thomas Harten, Kilnaleck had one trout of 4¼lbs on Friday September
10th at Orangefield using a small dry sedge, this fish was in
excellent condition.
Peter McArdle, Dundalk had 5 trout on Sunday September 12th, wet fly
fishing, best fish was 2¼lbs, all fish were released.
Michael Kelly, Dublin had two trout on Tuesday, 1¼ and 1½ lbs,
5 fish on Wednesday best was 2 and 2½ lbs, 5 fish on Thursday, best
was 3 lbs, 4 fish on Friday, best were 2 and 2½ lbs. All fish were
released. He caught our feature trout of the week at time of
writing, well done Michael!
Lough O'Flynn, Co Roscommon
Water levels are now near high winter level and very windy and this has
negatively impacted on
angling. Only 4 anglers fished the lake. John Connolly and John
Meagher had 7 fish between them over two days dapping the Daddy, best 1.5lbs. The
River Suck system is in flood and prospects don't look promising
until water levels recover and conditions improve. This is expected
hopefully by the weekend.
Lough Ennell, Co Westmeath

There has been some good returns coming off Lough Ennell.
Mattie Wheeler from Sligo fished over two days. He had 4 fish,
heaviest over 2lbs. Johnny Grimes, Mullingar had 5 fish for three
days, fishing midweek, heaviest 3lbs. John Brennan from Longford
fished over 4 days and had 5 fish, heaviest 3lbs, kept two, others
released. He caught his fish on a Silver Dabbler. Dave Mc
Bride, Dublin had a 2lb fish. Alan Mc Gory had a fish of 1.5lbs.
Tosh Grimes fished over the week and had 6 fish, best 3.5lbs.
ENNELL TROUT: Lough Ennell is still producing some great
trout on the troll and fly. It can really be a case of hit and miss
on Ennell, but if you hit it right the lake will produce super
fish. Mullingar Anglers Noel and Ray McIntyre were out for days
trolling last week and landed three big trout. Prospects look
promising for the coming week and beyond.
O'MALLEY CUP: Staying with Ennell, next Sunday September 19th
Lough Ennell Trout Preservation Association will host the O’Malley
Cup. This popular event will start at 11am from Whitebridge Bay.
Hopefully conditions will be good for this fly-fishing competition,
and we will see a few quality Ennell fish landed on the day. This is a club
competition and new members are more than welcome on the day.
OCTOBER IRISH ANGLER: Just got copy of October Irish
Angler. Lough Owel has a very colourful 4-page feature. Local
anglers Pat Liddy, Chris Mc Keown and the winners from the Dan
Mullally Shield are featured. Next months magazine is a pike special
we believe, and will be packed with tips on winter piking.

Nancy Gaffey and Gerry Wykes after the Athlone Anglers Association
competition.
LEO AND JOHN TRIUMPH IN WYKES/GAFFEY
CUP....
The penultimate trout competition of our season took place last Sunday
when thirty one boats took to the water to fish for the Wykes/Gaffey
Memorial Cup. As usual in September, when the kids go back to school,
the weather was good and with a nice southerly breeze even the fly men
were happy, but, and there is always a but, the trout decided to have
a lie in and very few were brought to the scales.
The presentation of prizes took place
that evening in Potters Bar where Paddy Martin and his staff were
fantastic hosts and where, when the scales came down, Leo Behan and
John Mulligan were declared the winners of the Wykes/Gaffey Memorial
Cup. It was a very close finish as only three ounces separated the
first two places and second place was taken by James Green Jnr, Thomas
Gaffey Jnr and James Green. The battle for the other places was also
very tight with third place going to Paul, Richie and Joe Fallon and
they were separated by only an ounce from Eoin Henry, Richard Henry
and Barney Kelly who took fourth place. The fifth and final spot went
to George Price and Karl Unwin. All the fish in the prizes were
caught, weighed and released unharmed on the lake during the day.
Thanks to the Wykes and Gaffey
families for their very generous sponsorship of this competition and
to Eoin O’Neill and Liam O’Sullivan who were the Captains of The Day.
HALLIGAN'S CUP ....
The next competition is for the
Halligan Cup which is a fund raiser for the Lough Ree Fish Hatchery
and we will publish full details of this competition in next week’s
paper.

Lough Acalla, Co Galway
No report this week.
Little Brosna and Camcor River, Co Offaly
There has been a succession of floods on the Camcor River during the
week and those who know the river will vouch that with river levels
constantly up and down is not the best for fishing. Some anglers
fished the dropping floods with some limited success.
Following heavy overnight rain on Monday night, the river is once
again in flood, but dropping well at time of writing. More next
week.
River Mulkear, Co Limerick
The week didn't pan out as expected on the Mulkear River,
considering the ideal angling conditions with lots of water. Most
anglers did manage to get the odd fish, but had to fish hard for
their Salmon. Two French guests of Millbank House and Angling Centre had a fish apiece
on Thursday, c. 4lbs, 6lbs, spinning the flying C. Another
Italian guest had a nice fresh run 8lb Salmon. The water level is
well up again following more heavy rain on Monday night and is
not expected in order for fishing until tomorrow Thursday. The
Newport River should recede and clear sufficiently to allow fishable
water, today Wednesday. TIGHT LINES!

River Feale, Co Kerry
There has been a good run of Salmon into the River Feale. Fishing
was mixed due to the successions of floods and at times unsuitable
angling conditions - water too heavy and dirty. Wednesday and Thursday
seemed to be better days with anglers reporting good catches. There
was a big dirty flood again yesterday Tuesday. Prospects look
promising over the coming days and the weekend, with drier weather
forecast.
TIGHT LINES!
NB: Anglers please be reminded that there is only one Salmon per
day allowed in September, subject to the total allowable catch. Also
Shrimp and Prawn fishing for Salmon is not permitted in the waters
of the Shannon Region.
