Game Angling & Fisheries News Update

Dated Wednesday May 5th, 2010

Photo: Fish of the week for Simon Kelly who caught this beautiful specimen size brown trout of 13.91lbs on April 23rd on Lough Derg while Pike fishing.

LIMERICK ANGLER LANDS TROUT OF A LIFETIME ON LOUGH DERG WHILE PIKE FISHING

We received details of our feature fish and fish of the week from Simon Kelly, Castletroy in Limerick, who recently landed this fine specimen trout of just under 14lbs on Lough Derg while Pike fishing. This was truly a great achievement and fish of a lifetime for Simon - well done!. The Mayfly is up on Lough Derg but trout have yet to switch on to them, judging by results from anglers on Derg over the last few days, comments Peter Gleeson, Angling correspondent. Athlone anglers Association had no competition this week on Lough Ree. Next up is the trout competition for the Donovan Cup which will be fished on May 9th.  There were good hatches of buzzer in Bogbay & Goreport on Lough Sheelin. Temperatures are still low & quite chilly and we only received a few catch returns for the week. Lough Owel fished well, Michael Flanagan reports. Plenty of anglers converged on Lough Acalla, Co Galway on Saturday May 1st, opening day. Some good fish were caught to 4lbs. Pallas lake also opened to angling on Saturday. Northerly winds kept air temperatures down for much of the week. Winds will continue to have a north, north-easterly influence for the coming days, so do wrap up.  TIGHT LINES!

UPPER SHANNON

LOUGH SHEELIN

LOUGH OWEL

Trout fishing has been good on Lough Owel and prospects look good for the coming week.

Mick Flanagan, Angling correspondent and photographer Mullingar reports Mobile: 087-2797270.

LOUGH OWEL NEWS: Noel and Ray McIntyre of Westmeath Motors fame were out on Owel last week and boated some great trout. The deadly duo produced a great fish of over 3lbs. The photo is on the camera phone, and we might try and get it on our system. On the competition scene Stan Mc Keown is keeping us up to date with what’s happening. Pat Noonan topped the Ace Cup with a fish of 0.935. John Coughlan finished 2nd, and Eugene Fagan 3rd. The O' Malley Cup was won by Mullingar angler Brendan Murray with a trout weighing 1.100kg. Dublin angler Martin Mc Gorian finished 2nd, with Liam Cox taking 3rd spot. On April 25th the TAFI qualifier took place with 30 anglers catching 56 trout. Ray Geraghty topped the day with a gross weight of 5lbs 13oz. Brendan Murray 2nd, with 4lbs 7oz, Pat Noonan 3rd with 4lbs 5oz. Ray Geraghty boated the best fish of 2lbs 7oz. In the coming weeks Owel will certainly be worth fishing.

MAY DAY HAS THE FISH TAKING: Yes the Merry month of May is upon us and the trout and pike are really taking the bait. Visiting and local anglers had some fantastic catches over the May Bank Holiday weekend. Owel and Lene produced great trout, and it's looking good for the coming weeks.

'HOOKED ON FISH' BY PETER GLEESON ANGLING CORRESPONDENT FOR THE NENAGH GUARDIAN NEWSPAPER Mob: 087-6564662.

Report dated May 5th, 2010.

THE MAYFLY IS UP ON DERG ...

The Mayfly is up on Lough Derg but trout have yet to switch on to them, judging by results from anglers over the last few days.

There were good hatches in Luska over the weekend and sparser hatches in Youghal Bay and Dromineer Bay. Just a few trout have been caught on the fly so far. Jim McCormack’s trout of 2lbs 9ozs put him as the main contender to win the competition sponsored by Pat Nolan of Premier Angling Supplies in Nenagh on Sunday last. His boat partner Brendan Ryan had two fish of 2lbs and 1 lbs 7ozs.

Most fish are being caught on wetflies, with mayflies or silver bodied patterns yielding the best results. Catches to the latter flies suggest that many trout are still feeding on perch or roach fry.

Eddie Hynes won the competition organised out of Mountshannon on Sunday last with a fish of 3lbs 12ozs, caught on a Silver Invicta. Some 52 anglers took part but only 12 fish were weighed in.

Neillie Barry had a fish of 2lbs 5ozs on Sunday on wetfly and Donnacha O’ Brien had a fish of 15ozs from Luska, on a green wet mayfly. Denis Seymour of Portroe was the first angler out of Garrykennedy to land a fish over the legal limit of 14 inches on the dapp (1lbs 13ozs) on Monday and Eddie Ryan of Youghal had two small fish, both returned, by the same method on the same day.

Garrykennedy Fishing Club has two mayfly competitions next weekend - for the Gerry Regan Trophy on Saturday and the Matt Kennedy Trophy on Sunday.

VISIT TO NORTH TIPPERARY ANGLING CENTRE ...

I paid a visit to the new North Tipperary Angling Centre in Killea, Ballinderry last Thursday where I enjoyed four hours of delightful fishing. The centre boasts a 17 acre spring fed (fly only) lake with crystal clear water that has just become home to a good stock of hard fighting rainbow and brown trout. The lake also has a native stock of large pike, perch and eels.

My fishing partner and I caught 19 rainbows up to 2.5lbs (all put back) in our four hours on the lake, as well as on a river that has been created as part of the centre.

It’s a perfect place to go for a bit of sport and an ideal venue for teaching youngsters how to fish. The fish get no pellets and have to rely on the natural environment for their food, so it’s going to be very interesting in the coming years for us anglers trying to figure out exactly what flies to use to catch these fish.

If the beginnings are anything to go by, this centre is going to be run to high standards and the fish will pose a challenge to even the best of anglers once they settle into their new environment. I can’t wait for next year when I intend to go chasing those prized over wintered fish. It will be almost as good as fishing for the wild species. Fishing on the lake is boat only, and the trout on the river can be caught by worm or fly. For all the details phone Pat at 087-2756775.

REPORT BY SIMON KELLY CASTLETROY LIMERICK

Photo: Fish of the week for Simon Kelly who caught this beautiful specimen Brown Trout of 13.91lbs on Lough Derg while Pike fishing.

" I was trolling for pike on Lough Derg on April 23rd and was out for about an hour. I was trolling around one of my favourite haunts for pike with a small bull dog lure when the fish struck. I knew it was a good fish but thought it was a decent pike. The fish fought very well for about 15 minutes and then I thought I had lost the fish as the line went slack. I left the rod down, pondering briefly on my bad luck when suddenly the rod lurched over once again! I couldn't believe my luck and I fought the fish for a further 10 minutes. I noticed that the fish stayed down very deep and it wasn't until I had the fish ready for the net that I realised it was a big Brownie!

My father and I are very conscious of conservation of fish stocks in Lough Derg (Brown trout and pike). We are regular anglers on the lake and operate a catch and release policy almost all of the time. I struggled with the decision to keep the fish for mounting purposes but after fishing the lake for over 20 years, I felt that this fish truly was the fish of a lifetime and I decided to get it mounted. If in the morning I caught a larger fish I would certainly return it to fight another day!"

I got the fish weighed on certified scales in Mc Keoghs butcher counter. The weight was 13.91lbs.

ShRFB reports for the RIVER FEALE CO KERRY

Salmon angling is slow due to low water levels on the River Feale. However a few anglers are trying for the Sea Trout, without much success. One lucky angler Rory Dalton from Athea hooked and landed a Salmon of 8lbs while sea trout fishing with very light gear, small fly rod, a 5lb line and very small Black Pennell. He landed the fish after a half hour battle.
