MAYFLY SEASON DISAPPOINTING SO FAR
ON DERG BUT EXPECTED TO HOT UP ON LOUGH REE AND OTHER FISHERIES THIS
WEEK
Where have all the small trout gone
asks Peter Gleeson in his report on the Mayfly fishing on Lough Derg.
After a promising start the Mayfly season on Lough Derg ,it has
turned into a rather dour affair in the past week. That said a small
number of anglers have caught fairly large trout. The news from the
vast majority of anglers is that angling has been rather poor on Derg thus far
and hope that it improves. The Annual Mayfly Cup Competition for the
Odbert Cup was fished over the weekend on Lough Key. Boyle &
District Angling Club reports.
The first of the Dapp competitions took place last
Sunday on Lough Ree, with a few small Mayfly hatches evident. First
of the competitions was for the Teddy Browne Cup, which attracted a
great entry. Eamon Cunningham of Athlone Anglers Association reports
on this and other up-coming Mayfly competitions scheduled on Lough
Ree during the Mayfly season. Our managed fisheries are now gearing
up and some good fishing was reported.
Mayfly were not plentiful on Sheelin up to the week ending May
16th. Hatches are expected to improve on the lake and with the warmer
weather forecast in the coming days, fishing should pick up. Lough Derravaragh has been
producing some great trout of late, including our feature fish this
week. Lough Owel is fishing well presently, and Ennell is worth
fishing also. Michael Flanagan reports on all the action
here.
Don't forget that
The
Mayfly season is expected to start peaking over the coming week or
so on many waters and with the weather to get warmer, gnat fishing
should come into its own and prospects look very promising.

TROUT OPEN MAYFLY COMPETITION -
BOYLE & DISTRICT ANGLERS
The Annual Mayfly Cup Competition for
the Odbert Cup was fished over the weekend of Saturday the 15th
and Sunday 16th of May. This is a beautiful Cup and was left to
the club by the relations of the late Emerald Odbert who lived at
Greatmeadow, Boyle.
A total of 19 anglers competing over
the weekend and a lot of Trout were caught over the two days, the
majority of which were released after weighing. Weather
conditions were reasonably good although it was a little on the
cold side.
The results were:
-
1st: Declan Conroy
-
2nd: Eamon Conroy
-
3rd: Joe Tormey
Presentation of prizes were in
Wynne's Bar in main street,. Boyle, and the club would like to
thank Keith and Majella for the wonderful hospitality they
provided on the night.
A great night of storytelling followed about the fish that were
caught and the ones that got away, and the later the night got the
bigger the fish got.
The next competition will be the
Martin Mitchell Cup and details of this event will be posted here
in the coming days. Further details see the Club blog
http://boyleanglers.blogspot.com/ or contact the
Secretary Jane Suffin on 086 8301261.
LOUGH SHEELIN
Mayfly were not plentiful on Sheelin up to week-ending May 16th.
Considering previous years, it is predicted to improve with
the warmer weather forecast in the coming days. There were small
hatches of fly observed around Crover and Arley.
Even though the hatches of mayfly were small, there were a few
good fish caught. Thomas Lynch LSTPA had a total of 9 fish over 3
days. Best weights were 5.5 lbs, 4lbs and 3 lbs. Six other fish
averaging 2lbs, all caught on wet Mayfly. All fish were released.
Michael Kelly, Dublin LSTPA caught 3 fish, best weights were 3lbs
and 4lbs. J McKenna from Monaghan had 2 fish. 4lbs weight each.
Thomas Harten caught a trout of 5.25lbs.

LOUGH O'FLYNN & UPPER RIVER SUCK
Water is at normal summer level and temperatures have
recovered of late following cool conditions earlier in the week. A
few anglers fished the lake, mostly fishing from the shore.
Anglers were happy enough with their catches by all accounts. Paul
Mc Loughlin from the White House Hotel fished on Saturday evening
and had 4 trout to 1.5lbs, some fish were released. There are
small hatches of Mayfly presently and hatches are improving each
day, so prospects look promising for the coming week. Tight
Lines!.

MID SHANNON AREA
LOUGH OWEL
Mick Flanagan, Angling correspondent and
photographer Mullingar reports Mobile: 087-2797270.
MAY DAY ON THE WAY: Yes, trout anglers are
loosing the plot as we go to print this week. The
May Fly hatches are starting, and trout anglers are
going mad. It's the time of year the dapping rod
gets the dusting down, and the may fly box, comes
back in action. It will remain in the fish mobile
till September as plenty of daddy longlegs, are also
drifting across our lakes. If you are not into
casting a fly, the dapp is the business.
On the competition scene it’s hectic to say the
least, and we had a cracking day on Owel last
Saturday. Also this week we cast back to the Weir
Cup, and include a few pics we left out last week.
All our Midland lakes are worth checking out as the
fly start to hatch. Olives are also appearing on
Owel and some good fish are on the move. Last
Saturday 3 competitions were fished on Owel and some
good fish were produced. In the coming weeks it
certainly is worth checking out. We hope to drop
down to Ree this week and check the May fly
situation, Check our angling slot next week.
OWEN FAGAN. As a forty something, I find it
hard to write about some of our most famous anglers
that have sadly passed away in recent years.
Unfortunately the un told stories that these
brilliant anglers told were never recorded. Last
Saturday on Owel friends and relations of the late
Eoin Fagan fished a competition in his memory. It
was a cracking day out, and well known Mullingar
Angler Ian Kelly topped the day. Ian was fishing
with some of Eoin's best mates John Byrnes and Joe
Gavin, and the lads topped the day taking 1st, 2nd,
and 3rd. The anglers dropped back to Clarke’s Bar
that evening, and Eamon Fagan of Dubarry Shoes, a
Nephew of Eoin, presented the prizes.
THAT’S IT: I more that likely forgot
something. Not to worry, we will cast back next
week. Ennell anglers will hold their first trout
competition of the season on May 30th, more on this
next week. Plus all the news on the Mayfly season.
Take care and tight lines.

Report from Mick Flanagan: Some nice trout
are coming off Ennell. Robbie Nicholson had a nice

Grimes landing some great fish from Ennell in recent
days. All going well some fish will show in the
coming weeks on the May Fly. Lilliput Boat hire have

DERRAVARAGH,
Report by Michael Flanagan
CRACKING TROUT: Kevin Walsh
from Ballinea produced a good trout
off Derravaragh
last week. Kevin was fishing with angling mates Finbarr
and Paul Moran, when he landed his prized catch. The fish was in
prime condition and really looked the business. Some weeks back we
featured a beautiful trout from Derravaragh caught on the troll.
In the coming weeks as the May fly
hatch Derravaragh just might produce a few crackers. There is a
good launching area at Donore shore for your boat, and if need
they can be hired at Derravaragh Boat Hire. Paul Smith

HUGH WINS THE TEDDY BROWNE CUP....
The first of the Dapp competitions
took place last Sunday and with a few small Mayfly hatches the
previous week it was hoped that Sunday would bring more and bigger
hatches but this was not to be. The competition for the Teddy
Browne Memorial Cup attracted a great entry, as always, with over
thirty boats taking part and with the fly hatches few and far
between there was very few fish brought to the scales but those
that were of excellent quality and it was the trout caught by Hugh
Tobin early in the day that was to ultimately prove to be the
winner.
The presentation of prizes took place
that evening in Gertie Browns where as usual the hospitality was
excellent and when the scales came down it was Hugh Tobin at the
top of the leader board with his fine trout. In second place with
a trout that would have won a competition on any other day was Joe
Fallon as indeed would the trout of David Grehan in third place
and the same can also be said for the trout of Stephen Conway in
fourth place.
Our thanks to Michael Loughman for
his continued and generous sponsorship of this competition and to
his staff in Gertie Browne’s for their excellent hospitality on
the night. Thanks also to Michael Ganly and to Eoin O’Neill who
were the Captains of The Day.
THE LOUGH REE INN CUP ....
The competition for the Lough Ree Inn
Cup will take place next Sunday, start from Gallagher’s or Coosan
Point at 10.00am and finish with lines up at 7.00pm. The
presentation will take place in the Lough Ree Inn with scales down
at 8.00pm and presentation immediately afterwards.
THE DAPP INN COMPETITIONS ....
The following is the schedule for the
Dapp competitions over the next month: 23rd May 2010 – The Lough
Ree Inn Cup; 30th May 2010 – The Barra Flynn Cup.
The competition for the heaviest trout on the Dapp will run from
Sunday 16th May to Sunday 13th June inclusive. Trout caught on the
Sunday competitions will count and is open to all members who are
automatically entered and no entry fee is required. The cup will
be presented at the annual presentation night later in the year.
The money competition will take place
from Monday 17th May to Saturday 12th June and trout caught on a
Sunday will not count regardless of whether the angler was fishing
in a competition or not. The entry fee for this competition is €15
and all entry fees will b e given out in prizes as follows 1st –
50%; 2nd – 30%; 3rd – 20%. All anglers must register with Eamon
Cunningham for this competition.

LOUGH DERG
'HOOKED ON FISH' BY PETER GLEESON ANGLING CORRESPONDENT FOR
THE NENAGH GUARDIAN NEWSPAPER Mob: 087-6564662.
Report dated May 12th, 2010. From Peter Gleeson, Nenagh
Guardian.
WHERE HAVE ALL THE SMALL TROUT GONE ?...
After a promising start the Mayfly season on Lough
Derg has turned into a rather dour affair in the past
week.
While a small number of anglers have caught fairly large
trout, the news from the vast majority is that angling has
been rather poor.
At least twenty boats took part in the competition for the
Jackie Whelan Cup from Garrykennedy on Sunday last but
only five fish were weighed in at the end of the day. The
winner was Portroe angler Mal McCormack with a trout of
4lbs 2ozs caught on wet fly in Youghal Bay.
The only other four fish weighed at Garrykennedy on the
day were produced by John Malone (2lbs 7ozs), Neillie
Barry (1lbs 15ozs), Simon Ryan (1lbs 12ozs) Eugene Willis
(1lbs 11ozs).
The fishing on Saturday last was almost as poor for the
Caddy Kennedy Trophy competition out of Garrykennedy. The
winner was Alan Slattery with a trout of 4lbs 11ozs caught
on a wet golden dabbler.
Denis Seymour of Portroe also had a good outing on
Saturday, taking a trout of 3lbs 15ozs on the dapp from
Youghal, while Donal Keating also had a trout of 2lbs 9ozs
on the dapp.
A notable feature in regard to many of the larger trout
being caught is that they have one or more lamprey eels
attached to them. This may suggest that the big trout are
spending much of their time on the bottom of the lake
rather than coming up to feed on the fly – which is not
good news for mayfly anglers.
In recent days the majority of boats have come in without
a fish off Lough Derg and anglers have reported seeing
very few fish rising to the plentiful hatches of mayfly.
Some say the unseasonably cold weather has not helped
matters, but with temperatures now about to rise fishermen
and women are hoping that it will provide the ideal
conditions for evening gnat fishing over the coming weeks.
One matter of concern to anglers is the dearth of fish
from the one pound mark or under that are being landed.
This is a change in trend that is in stark contrast to the
last decade when catches of smaller fish were generally
healthy at Mayfly time.
Other fine fish caught over the past ten days or so
included a trout of over 4lbs by Willie and Jodie McGrath
out of Dromineer on Monday of last week. John Kennedy of
Curragh, Portroe, had a fish of 3lbs 2ozs the same night
in Youghal Bay and his brother Mike had one of 2lbs 10oz
the following night in the Castlelough area. Both fish
were got on a dry fly.
Jim McCormack, Portroe, produced the best trout caught out
of Garrykennedy on a fly so far this year on Wednesday
evening of last week at the bottom of Youghal Bay. His
4lbs 13ozs trout, which succumbed to a gnat, made him
winner of the €300 prize for the Ciss Ryan Pub competition
for the heaviest trout weighed in at the Garrykennedy
licensed premises between May 1-16. As part of the
competition organised by the proprietors Roy and Denise
Breen, a further €300 is up for grabs for the heaviest
trout caught from now to end of May.
Other large trout caught over the past week included one
from John Malone of 2lbs 14 ozs; Jerry O’ Brien had two
beauties of 3lbs 10ozs and 3lbs 8ozs in the space of an
hour at Parker’s Point on Thursday last while Darren
Gardiner and Tom Haskett (Killaloe) had fish at or over
the 4lbs mark.
The Lough Derg Yacht Club held a trout fishing competition
on Sunday May 9th for the Gerry O Dowd Perpetual Trophy.
In total 60 rods competed but only five fish were weighed
in. The winner was Geoff Phipps with a trout of 2lbs 7ozs
caught on the dapp. Second was Paul Stevens (2lbs 6ozs,
dry fly), third, Dennis Hassey (2lb 4ozs, dry fly);
fourth, David Moynan (1lb 8ozs); Ladies prize, Kathleen O’
Meara; Junior prize, Owen Gilmartin.
