& Fisheries News Update
Dated
Wednesday May 12th, 2010
Photo: The Irish record trout
of 26lbs 2oz caught on Lough Ennell in 1894 still holds for now
but only just! This huge Corrib trout which topped the scales at
25.1lbs was recently caught by visiting Czech angler Karel
Sourek. It is the largest trout caught in Ireland in over 100
years. The picture was received from Michael Flanagan -
source: Tom Kelly of Oughterard which was sent to Kevin Crowley
WFFB.
MAYFLY FEVER CATCHING ON FAST AS
SEASON COMMENCES ON LOUGH DERG
Despite the cool week, Mayfly are now
hatching on Lough Derg and anglers are starting to get reasonably
good results at various venues around the lake, Peter Gleeson
reports on the pleasure angling and local competitions on Derg. One
of the big stories last week which featured in the national angling
press was the huge trout caught by visiting Czech angler Karel
Sourek while fishing on Lough Corrib. The massive fish which was
released weighed 25.1lbs. Well done to Karel from the Shannon
Regional Fisheries Board. Fishing has been generally slow on our
midland fisheries this week with the exception of Lough Owel and to
a lesser extent Lough Ennell, which by all accounts has started to
fish of late with good hatches of olives. Sheelin and O'Flynn have
been slow due to the cold conditions. Lough Acalla is worth trying
for the Rainbow stockies. Athlone Anglers Association reports on the
O'Donovan Cup trout competition fished on Lough Ree and announces
the up-coming Dapp competition fixtures. Mayfly hatches are just
starting on Ree but should take another week before fish
switch on to them properly. Good conditions are expected for
the evening gnat fishing on Derg from the weekend onwards, with
milder weather on the way. TIGHT LINES!

LOUGH
SHEELIN
Trout fishing has been very slow on Sheelin due to the very chilly
conditions with northerly winds prevailing all week. Ned Murray
from Ardee had 1 trout of 2lbs caught on buzzer at Goreport. Gene
Brady LSTPA had one trout. Other than that not a lot to report.

LOUGH O'FLYNN & UPPER RIVER SUCK
There was a bitterly cold north, north easterly wind on Lough
O'Flynn and River Suck for most of the week which hampered
angling. Mayfly hatches have just commenced on the River
Suck. Hatches are only sporadic on O'Flynn as yet. We await milder
conditions which are forecast over the weekend. This should
improve the fishing.

Fisheries Inspector Co Roscommon at 087 2536064.
MID SHANNON AREA
LOUGH OWEL
Trout fishing is good
at the moment on Lough Owel. Sooty olive is
working well. Weather remains cool for the time of
year with grass frosts in the morning time.
Mick Flanagan, Angling correspondent and
photographer Mullingar reports Mobile: 087-2797270.
OWEL CRACKER: Anglers are reeling in some super
fish on Owel, and we received a super photo of a
beautiful 3lbs plus fish caught recently on Owel.
Stuart Marry and his angling pal Paul Forde boated a
fine fish of 3 .5lbs on a Claret Dabbler. The fish
was in mint condition, and in the coming weeks Owel
will be worth checking out.
NALLY AND FAGAN: What a pair. Unfortunately
in the Angling World we lose some great characters,
and this pair would take some beating. Jimmy and
Owen will be remembered in the coming weeks on the
competition scene. On Saturday May 15th a
competition will take place on Owel in honour the
late Owen Fagan. Fishing from 12- 4pm check-in
Mullally's Shore. Presentation in Clarke’s Bar at
6pm. We just might be Out & About for this
competition. On May 30th Jimmy Nally Memorial Cup
will be fished on Derravaragh. We pulled an old
Black & White picture from a file of Jimmy and Owen
in their hay day. I am told it was taken back in
1956.
MOUNT DALTON: Another Jewel in the Crown
here in Westmeath is Mouth Dalton Lake near
Rathconrath. It's a beautiful lake full of cracking
brown trout. It is stocked regularly by the ShRFB
but also hold some very colourful wild brown trout.
I spent a day last week on Mount Dalton with Uncle
Pat, and Frank McKeown who is really enjoying his
angling. Frank better known to his angling pals and
Golf buddies as Chesty is having a fantastic season,
and long may it last.
LOUGH ENNELL
Fishing on Ennell has started to pick up of late
with a good hatch of olives. Colin Cahill had fish
to over 3lbs, fishing early morning.
ENNELL RECORD STILL STANDS by Michael Flanagan
Here in the Midlands we almost lost our Trout Rod
caught record. Yes the Ennell trout still is the top
fish in the fishing game records at 26lbs 2oz. Mind
you a beauty rattled the scales last week on Corrib
at 25.1lbs. The lucky angler was Karel Sourek and
Tom Kelly of Oughterard sent the photo to Kevin.
Naturally we have to publish the photo of this
beautiful fish, and it almost took our record from
the Midlands.

along with Barney Kelly accept the Donovan Memorial Cup from Tony
Stacey Bar Manager in Sean’s Bar.
RICHARD SHOWS THE WAY IN DONOVAN CUP ....
It’s that time of the year when a small insect
called a Mayfly drives anglers demented and while it
may be a little late this year due to the bad winter
and spring the effect is still the same as twenty
nine boats full of anglers turned up last Sunday to
check out Lough Ree for signs of the first hatch.
While there was some Mayfly spotted they were very
few and far between and it may be another week to
ten days before we see them in any numbers and the
other thing that was scarce on the day was trout as
only two were brought to the scales with Richard
Henry producing the goods late in the day.
The weigh in and presentation of prizes took place
that evening in Sean’s Bar where Tony Stacey and his
staff were fantastic hosts and when the scales came
down at eight thirty it was Richard Henry, Eoin
Henry and Barney Kelly who topped the leader board
and in second place with the only other fish weighed
in was Liam O’Sullivan and Noel Courtney.
Thanks to Paul and Timmy Donovan for their generous
sponsorship of this competition and to Tony Stacey
and the staff on the night for the excellent
hospitality and not forgetting Dominic Conway who
was the very un-busy Captain of The Day.
THE DAPP COMPETITIONS ...
The following is the schedule for the Dapp
competitions over the next month: 16th May 2010 –
The Teddy Browne Cup; 23rd May 2010 – The Lough Ree
Inn Cup; 30th May 2010 – The Barra Flynn Cup.

will run from Sunday 16th May to Sunday 13th June
inclusive. Trout caught on the Sunday competitions
will count and is open to all members who are
automatically entered and no entry fee is required.
The cup will be presented at the annual presentation
night later in the year.
The money competition will take place from Monday
17th May to Saturday 12th June and trout caught on a
Sunday will not count regardless of whether the
angler was fishing in a competition or not. The
entry fee for this competition is €15 and all entry
fees will be given out in prizes as follows 1st –
50%; 2nd – 30%; 3rd – 20%. All anglers must register
with Eamon Cunningham for this competition.
FOR YOUR DIARY ...
The following is the schedule of competitions that
it is proposed to hold over the next few weeks

circumstances, however the details of each

Athlone.ie website and sent out to members by text
message in the week prior to each competition.

LOUGH ACALLA CO GALWAY
Anglers reported very good catches on Lough Acalla
last week. Fish were caught at all times of the day,
however, fly hatches were poor due to the cold
conditions. Water levels on the lake remain
very high. The average weight of fish caught were
1-1.5lbs. Best flies were Green Olive, Golden
Olive, Sooty Olive, Black Pennell, Pheasant tail and
Muddlers. A 2.5lb Rainbow was the best reported fish
of the week, caught by a Ballinasloe angler. With a
good stock of fish in the lake, angling prospects
look promising and milder weather is on the way.

Fisheries Inspector, Roscommon 087 2266735

LOUGH DERG
'HOOKED ON FISH' BY PETER GLEESON ANGLING CORRESPONDENT FOR THE NENAGH
GUARDIAN NEWSPAPER Mob: 087-6564662.
Report dated May 12th, 2010.
TROUT OF 14LBS LANDED ON LOUGH DERG ....
Photo: Fish of the week last
week for Simon
Kelly who caught this beautiful specimen size brown trout of 13.91lbs
on April 23rd on Lough Derg while Pike fishing.
Simon Kelly of Castletroy in Limerick landed a fine specimen trout
of just under 14lbs on Lough Derg while pike fishing in recent
weeks, caught on a bulldawg bait. Simon, who normally operates a
catch and release policy, kept this monster for mounting purposes.
In truth, it was a fish of a lifetime and a conservationist like
Simon deserves to keep it. Well done Simon!
MAYFLY FEVER TAKES HOLD ON DERG IN RATHER COLD CONDITIONS ...
Trout fishing on Lough Derg has been reasonably good this mayfly
season, despite the unseasonably cold conditions. Many of the best
fish are being caught on the dapp and wetflies but anglers are
hoping that the weather will soften soon in order to provide some
good evening fishing on the gnat.
Garrykennedy Fishing Club held two competitions last weekend and
sixteen trout were weighed in on Sunday. The winners of the Gerry
Regan Trophy on Saturday were father and son from Garrykennedy
Eugene and Ciaran Willis with a trout of 2lbs 9ozs, caught on a
wulff. Tommie Moloney won the Matt Kennedy Trophy on Sunday with a
trout of 2lbs 15ozs on the dapp.
Donnacha Ryan of Newtown had a fish of 3lbs 8ozs on a silver
dabbler from the bottom of Youghal Bay on Friday last and at least
four more “keepers” over the weekend. Donal Keating of Portroe had
a fish of 2lbs 10ozs on the dapp on Friday last.
Portroe anglers Padraig O’ Brien and Mal McCormack had two fish on
the wets on Sunday and John Malone from the same parish had a fish
of 2lbs 2ozs on the dapp on Saturday in Youghal Bay. Padraig O’
Brien also had three fish on Wednesday of last week in
Williamstown on mayfly emergers and wulffs.
Eddie Hynes had three trout in fifteen minutes on Mayfly emergers
in Meelick on Sunday and John Ryan of Newtown had two good fish
from Youghal on Saturday and another on Sunday. Interestingly,
John discovered a good quantity of daddy longlegs mixed with
mayfly in the stomachs of the fish. There has been an unusually
good hatch of daddies on Derg over the past fortnight and maybe
dapping this insect could prove productive, even though this
method of fishing is not a tradition on the lake.
Sean Treacy of Ardcroney had a great outing on the wets on Sunday
while fishing out of Dromineer, landing fish of 5lbs and 2lbs.
Jodie and William McGrath had a fish of 4lbs 1oz on Monday, May
10, also fishing out of Dromineer.
Nenagh angler Kevin Crosbie had two fine trout of over 3lbs on the
wulff on Thursday of last week. As is Kevin’s style, both fish
were released. Edwin Morgan of Nenagh and his boat partner had a
great outing the same day, taking five on the wets, all released.
I forgot to mention last week the great fish of 3lbs 8ozs caught
by Portroe angler Martin O’ Brien. Martin, who is only fishing a
few years, hooked his fish on a pearly dabbler at Ryan’s Point –
winning the top prize in the Ciss Ryan’s Pub competition for the
heaviest trout caught on a fly in April.
There was some very good gnat fishing in Youghal Bay on Saturday
evening last. My boat partner Jerry O’ Brien and I had six fish,
including a trout of 1lb 15ozs caught by Jerry. I had my own
unusual experience when I hooked a small trout of about half a
pound. When bringing him to the boat he was grabbed by a pike of
about 5lbs which refused to release the trout from his jaws. I
eased both the trout and the greedy pike under Jerry’s
outstretched net to secure for myself two species in one cast!
Both were released, the trout absolutely reefed by the pike’s
teeth”, and probably dead at this stage.
Meanwhile, Alan Slattery had a total of three good fish on the
gnat in Youghal on Saturday and Sunday. But conditions need to get
warmer for this method of fishing to come into its own.
Well done to Frank Moloney, the proprietor of the aptly named Dapp
Inn pub in Nenagh, who had two salmon on the Shannon in Limerick
last Thursday, one on fly and one spinning.
Two competitions will be staged by the Garrykennedy Fishing Club
next weekend. The Caddy Kennedy Trophy competition is on Saturday
and the Jackie Whelan Cup on Sunday.
HUGE LOUGH CORRIB TROUT CAUGHT BY VISITING CZECH ANGLER...
Meanwhile, the largest trout caught in Ireland in over 100 years
was landed on Lough Corrib by visiting Czech angler Karel Sourek
last week – a truly massive fish of 25.1 lbs. Karel was due to
return home after his fishing holiday on Corrib but his flight was
delayed due to the Icelandic volcanic ash cloud. He returned to
the lake and caught the whopper in eight metres of water. Karel
released the fish back into the lake, saying “the beautiful
warrior” deserved to be freed.
