angler John O'Connell, congratulations to John.
A SALMON OF A LIFETIME FOR
LIMERICK ANGLER ON THE SHANNON AT PLASSEY
On the morning of St Patrick’s day,
Limerick angler John O’ Connell hooked what would turn out to be a
personal best – the biggest Salmon he had ever caught. The salmon
was hooked on Peig’s height which is just upstream of the Black
bridge on the River Shannon at Plassey and was a ranched fish
(reared to smolt stage in Parteen hatchery). See full report
and press release. The LSTPA Kilroy Cup Club Trout
Competition was held on Sheelin on Saturday 20th March 2010. 37
anglers fished and 8 fish were weighed in. Top rod went to Eamon
Ross with fish of nearly 7lbs and 4lbs respectively. Water
levels are very low in the upper and mid Suck system. Mid week
temperatures rose significantly reaching near the mid teens, with
some fly life evident on Lough O'Flynn, but trout fishing remains
slow. A great fish of nearly 7lbs won the Athlone Anglers
Association trout competition outing on Lough Ree on Sunday for
the Quinnsworth Cup. Next up is their competition for the
Anglers Rest Cup which will take place next Sunday March 28th.
Club secretary Eamon Cunningham reports. Angling correspondent
Peter Gleeson 'Hooked on Fish' reports that trolling is the most
productive method on Lough Derg at the moment. He fills us in on
lots of other local news on Lough Derg, the Nenagh River and lower
Shannon, including local competition results for St Flannans and
Garrykennedy Fishing clubs. See also details of the upcoming
Mulkear Life Project Educational talks. TIGHT LINES!

NB:
It has come to our attention that there is a type error in the trolling
regulation in our recently published Lough Sheelin pocket guide under the Angling Rules, which states that
trolling is allowed from March 1st, this is incorrect. It should
read May 1st. Trolling is not permitted from March 1st to April
30th inclusive, please be aware of this. Revised guides will be
available as soon as possible and we will notify you of their
availability.
We apologise for this error and will re-send anglers who requested
our guides online the corrected version in due course. Thank you.

LOUGH O'FLYNN & UPPER RIVER SUCK
Water levels are very low in the upper and mid Suck system. Mid
week temperatures rose significantly reaching near mid teens, with
some fly life evident. There were very few anglers out
fishing but trout fishing was described as slow on both the upper
River Suck and Lough O'Flynn. One angler had a trout of 1lb on the
Island river on a pheasant tail nymph, fish was released. Anglers
rose a few other fish on the river. 5 regular visitors fished
Lough O'Flynn had 4 fish, most fish were released. Other than
that, there's very little angling activity or reports received.

BERNARD AND RICHARD LAND FISH OF A LIFETIME ...
Last Sunday was one of those days when everything
seemed perfect for fishing the wind was right, the
sunshine was right in fact the only thing niggling
at the anglers was that the water temperature was
still a little low for this time of the year but
even that didn’t put anyone off as thirty one boats
took part in the Quinnsworth Cup. While the quantity
of fish caught was low the quality of the fish in
terms of their condition and size was excellent and
it was the fantastic trout caught by Bernard Kelly
and Richard Henry was to prove finest on the day.
The weigh in and presentation took place that
evening in Sean Og’s Bar where John And Ann Hayden
along with Bar Manager Paddy Martin and his staff
were excellent hosts and the anglers were
entertained into the evening by Bernard and Patrice
Coyle who, as usual, put on a great show.
When the scales came down it was the fantastic trout
of Bernard Kelly and Richard Henry which topped the
scales at 6lb 10ozs 12drms and which was released
back into the lake to become even larger and be
caught by another angler, hopefully me! Conor Hannon
and John Naughton also had a fantastic trout at 4lb
14ozs 4drms which was caught on the fly and which
was also released back into the lake. A trout of 2lb
10ozs 8drms was brought to the scales by Patrick
Killion and Thomas Killion Snr and was duly awarded
third place while the trout of Sean Berry and
Patrick Sherlock weighing 2lb 1oz 4drms took fourth
place.
Our thanks to Ann and John Hayden not only for their
excellent hospitality but also for their generous
sponsorship of this competition and thanks also to
Sean Kelly who was the Captain of the Day.
THE ANGLERS REST CUP .....
The competition for the Anglers Rest Cup will take
place next Sunday March 28th starting from
Gallagher’s at 10.30am and finishing with lines up
at 5.30pm. The weigh in and presentation of prizes
will take place that evening in the Snug Bar with
the scales down at 8.30pm sharp.
FOR YOUR DIARY ...
The following is the schedule of competitions that
it is proposed to hold over the next few weeks
Please note this list may change due to unforeseen
circumstances, however the details of each
competition will be published in this newspaper, the

LOUGH DERG ...
Meanwhile , trolling is still proving the be the most
productive fishing method for trout on Lough Derg this week,
but hopefully the warmer weather will bring some fish to the
fly soon.
There were two trout trolling competitions in Ballina/Killaloe
on Sunday (March 21). The winner of the Ballina/Killaloe
Anglers Club competition, sponsored by Rita and Mike Kelly,
was Michael Conroy with a fish of 2 lb 9 oz. Paul Hanly and
Mike Quinlivan had the heaviest bag, 4 lb 1 oz. Johnny Mowat
and John Travers had the second heaviest fish and the
juvenile winners were Rory and Anthony Kennedy.
Saint Flannan’s Fishing Club also had a trolling
competition, kindly sponsored by the Anchor Bar. The winner
there was Pat Riordan with a trout of 2lb 5oz. Jimmy Ryan
was second and Ger Hickey was third. The club also has a
competition on Sunday, March 28th, sponsored by Walsh’s’
Bar. The weigh-in will be at 6.30pm.
Garrykennedy Fishing Club members are back on the lake this
Sunday (March 28) for a trout fishing competition. The vast
majority of members will be trolling as there are still no
reports of the trout coming to the fly on Derg.
NENAGH RIVER ...
Angler Anthony Fitzpatrick tells me he spotted four lamprey
eels while wading the Nenagh River 200 metres downstream of
the Ballyartella Weir at the weekend. Lampreys have become
the bane of the trout angler’s life here in the Lough Derg
catchment.
There appears to be a surge in reports in recent years of
trout and pike being caught in the lake with these eels
attached, leach-like, to flesh of the fish by their sucker
mouths. The big problem for anglers is that many of the fish
with eels attached to them are in emaciated or poor
condition. It seems the eels are literally sucking the life
blood from the fish.
A study on lampreys by freshwater biologist Dr Fran Igoe has
been taking place on the lake over the last couple of years,
funded under the Lough Derg Native Fish Biodiversity
Project.
Fran, who now works with the Southern Fisheries Board, gave
a very interesting talk on the subject in the Hibernian Inn
in Nenagh on Thursday of last week (March 18). Initial
identification of the sample lamprey given to Fran by local
anglers have shown that these are a sea lamprey.
Fran, lead scientist and co-ordinator of the biodiversity
project, said there is speculation that the lamprey found in
the lake is a landlocked species. “If this is really the
case then this would be of great significance. There are
only a handful of such cases throughout the world,” said
Fran.
Anglers who catch pike or trout with lamprey stuck to them
are urged to forward the eels to the project team.
Photographs of the mark left by the lamprey on the fish you
caught are also required, so bring your camera in the boat
with you. The project team also want you to record the
length of the fish and weight and details of where the fish
was caught, and if you have a fish finder please provide
details of the depth the fish was caught at. Eels for
analysis can be put in a deep freeze until collected by a
member of the project team. The angling co-ordinator of the
project is Kevin Grimes of St Flannan’s Fishing Club in
Killaloe who will be happy to organise for the collection of
eels and recorded statistics. Kevin can be contacted on
087-6784539.
As one of the many anglers in the Lough Derg area and
throughout Ireland who have had their outboard engines
stolen from his boat in recent years (Oh, my lovely new 15hp
Yahama!), a story of a court case published in last week’s
Connacht Tribune caught my eye. A Polish man who was
involved in the theft of six outboard engines around
Oughterard , and which were immediately shipped abroad, was
sentenced to 20 months in prison when he appeared at a
recent sitting of Galway District Court.
The court heard that the theft matters involving Adam
Syrowski (40) spanned a period of two years, and involved a
range engines and other goods to the value of €12,000. Half
the items stolen by the accused and his gang of
co-conspirators were recovered but all the outboard engines
taken from different parts of Oughterard had been shipped by
courier to Lithuania within two days of being stolen. The
court heard that the “main player” of the gang would be
appearing in court at a later date.
Reports from the Corrib and the Mask and the Midland lakes
is that trout fishing remains relatively poor even for those
trolling. Don’t worry, things will now pick up with the
arrival of kinder weather.

A SALMON OF A LIFETIME ON THE SHANNON AT PLASSEY
Press release dated March 23rd
On the morning of St Patrick’s
Day, Limerick angler John O’ Connell hooked what would turn out to
be a personal best – the biggest Salmon he had ever caught. The
salmon was hooked on Peig’s Height which is just upstream of the
Black Bridge on the River Shannon at Plassey.
With reel screaming, the mighty fish took off downstream in its
first big heart stopping run. When nearing the bridge the fish
turned into a snag in an attempt for freedom. The line went taut
with little movement. Was the fish gone? Was the line snagged but
fish still there? Panic nearly set in. It was soon established that
swift action was required and there was great commotion amongst
other anglers, all trying to help. When Dan O Neill’s boat arrived
John jumped aboard. More anglers on the shore ran and got the
required implement and the line was eventually freed. After another
ten minutes of battle, the fish was brought to the surface where it
was ably netted by Stephen Slattery. Shouts of "it’s only a pike
rang out" , but by the time the boat reached the shore at the Black
Bridge, to everyone’s amazement it was discovered the true extent of
the catch, a huge Salmon and what a magnificent fish it was.
It had taken almost 40 minutes to land the great fish. John’s great
achievement was truly a fish of a lifetime. John said “these are the
days that make up for all those blanks”. The story will no doubt be
embellished with time and the heart thumping excitement recounted
over many years to come. The landing was assisted by Dan O’Neill,
Stephen Slattery, Michael Brommell and Kevin Hannan. The fish was
weighed in at 22lbs and at present is at a taxidermist being
prepared for mounting.
Salmon fishing on the River Shannon is open on a catch and release
basis from O' Brien’s Bridge to Thomond Bridge, Limerick. All wild
fish must be returned to the water alive. The fish caught by John
was a ranched salmon which means that it originated from the ESB
hatchery in Parteen, where it would have been grown to appox 1 year
old and released as a smolt. These ranched fish are visually
distinguished as their adipose fin is removed/clipped. Ranched fish
can be kept by anglers subject to the applicable national salmon bag
limits.
There is a ban on the sale of rod caught salmon, as part of the
conservation measures in place. The co-operation of anglers with all
such conservation measures is vital to ensuring that the fishery
remains open. Eamon Cusack CEO of the Shannon Regional Fisheries
Board stated that “salmon stocks are under threat from a variety of
factors with survival at sea now becoming a major issue. To see such
large salmon returning, after having spent approximately two
years feeding at sea, is an exciting beginning to the 2010 season. I
wish all anglers a good season this year and look forward to their
continued co-operation with conservation measures.”
