LOUGH OWEL AND SHEELIN WORTH
TRYING THIS WEEK
It was a cold week for fishing.
There's not a lot of angling activity yet. Lough Owel fished quite
well, despite the cold conditions. There was very little angling
reported on Ennell or Derravaragh. Some good fish to 5lbs were
caught and released on Sheelin. Feature photo shows a fish of over
4lbs being released by Danny Levy. The trout season kicked off on Lough
Derg on Monday last March 15th. Peter Gleeson, angling
correspondent for the Nenagh Guardian newspaper reports on the
opening few days on Derg. Eddie Ryan of
Youghalarra had a magnificent trout of 8lbs 10ozs which he caught off
Ryan’s Point on Lough Derg on the opening day Monday March 15th,
The competition for the Kevin Griffin Memorial Cup as usual
attracted a great entry for Athlone Anglers Association members on Lough
Ree with twenty eight boats taking part. Eamon Cunningham reports
on this and announces the upcoming Quinnsworth Cup trout
competition. An angler pleasure fishing had a good fish on Lough
Ree at over 8lbs.
Salmon fishing has been very slow due to the very low water on the
River Feale and Mulcair. Some rain is forecast over the coming days, we will have to see if this is
enough rain to bring on a flood. More on this next week.
Weather is a lot milder of late which should improve angling
prospects on our trout loughs over the coming week.

SHEELIN
Temperatures were very low last week which affected angling
numbers on Lough Sheelin. 11 trout were reported caught.
Regular to the lake Michael Kelly had 1 fish of 2.5lbs. Andrew
Brown had 2 fish averaging 2lbs. Cian Murtagh had one fish of
2lbs. J. McGuire had a fish of 3lbs, all fish were released.
Danny Levy reported catching a few good fish while fishing Sheelin
with his brother Nathan and friend last week. Danny had a fish of
2lbs, 2lb 15oz and 4lb 2oz (see feature photo this week).
Nathan had a fish of 5lbs and friend had a fish of 1lb 8ozs
and 3lbs. All fish were released.
Prospects look better with a rise in air temperature over recent
days and more anglers are expected to get out fishing over the
coming week.
NB:
In regard to the Lough Sheelin pocket guide recently published,
it has come to our notice that there is a type error in the trolling
regulation in the guide under the Angling Rules, which states that
trolling is allowed from March 1st, this is incorrect. It should
read May 1st. Trolling is not permitted from March 1st to April
30th inclusive, please be aware of this. Revised guides will be
available as soon as possible and we will notify you of their
availability.
We apologise for this error and will re-send anglers who requested
our guides online the corrected version in due course. Thank you.

LOUGH OWEL
Lough Owel has been
fishing quite well with anglers meeting fish despite
the cold temperatures. Milder weather is on
the way from St Patrick's Day onwards and angling
should further improve in response to the improved
conditions.

CULLION FISH FARM LAD RETURNS ....
Some weeks back I met Noel Cox of Multyfarnham, who was home on
holidays from New York where he is living with his family. Noel
is a member of the famous Cox fishing family and his brother
Christy is one of our finest fly anglers. Prior to heading to
New York 25 years ago Noel worked with some of our best known
Cullion Fish farm lads from days gone by, including Charlie
Nolan, Joe Dolan, and Jack Doolin. Unfortunately I met Noel just
before he returned to New York, and hopefully I will get in
touch with him by e-mail soon and get a few yarns about his days
with the lads.

THE KEVIN GRIFFIN MEMORIAL CUP ....
The competition for the Kevin Griffin Memorial Cup as usual
attracted a great entry with twenty eight boats taking part. With
the cold weather still persisting the water temperature still has
not risen to March norms so the signs were not good but the signs
are not always correct and when Tony Doolan is on the competition
you can be sure that he will be there or thereabouts.
The presentation of prizes took place
that evening in Gertie Browns where Michael Loughman and his staff
were at their usual best and the hospitality was excellent. When
the scales came down it was the aforementioned Tony Doolan along
with his son Declan who sat proudly on top of the leader board
with his 5lb 5oz trout which was weighed on the lake and released
back to grow even larger. Second place went to Gerry Mulvey and
Paddy Killion for their 4lb 12oz trout; this was Gerry’s first
time fishing and had travelled from Wicklow that morning to take
part in the competition and he was so delighted with the reception
he had received from the Athlone Anglers and the great fish he had
caught that he donated his prize to the social committee to show
his thanks. Michael Dunning and David Grehan were awarded third
place for their 3lb 4oz trout and fourth place went to Paul and
Joe Fallon whose trout was only three quarters of an ounce lighter
at 3lb 3ozs 4drms and who also released their fish. The fifth and
final spot went to James Green Jnr and his dad James Green for
their 2lb trout and this fish was also released.
Thanks to the Griffin family for their continued and generous
sponsorship of this competition and to Eamon Cunningham who was
the Captain of the Day.

Memorial Cup trout competition.

BIG TROUT CAUGHT ON LOUGH DERG.....

Gleeson.
The start of the trout fishing season on Lough Derg and its
tributaries on Monday last marked a memorable day for a
Nenagh man who realised his lifetime angling dream by
landing a massive trout of 8lbs 10ozs.
Eddie Ryan from Youghalarra caught the fish at around 5.30pm
while trolling at Ryan’s Point, located midway between the
villages of Dromineer and Garrykennedy.
The cock trout, which was in excellent condition, was
tempted by a six-inch Rapella lure. “He did everything to
get away,” Eddie told The Guardian. “He jumped up into the
air twice and went under the boat a few times. I nearly had
a heart attack with the excitement and couldn’t believe it
when I got him into the boat.”
The magnificent fish guaranteed Eddie the first prize in the
start-of-season competition sponsored by Pat Ryan’s Pub in
Portroe. The competition was organised by Tommie Moloney and
John Malone of the Garrykennedy Fishing Club.
A total of 38 anglers competed in the event and 13 fish over
the legal limit of 14 inches were produced for the weigh-in.
In second place with the greatest weight was Jerry O’ Brien
with two fish (3lbs. 2ozs and 1lb 6ozs) and in third place
was Martin O’ Brien with a fish of 1lb 14ozs.
The best of the fishing was between Castlelough and Sally’s
Bay where Alan Slattery landed eleven trout and Jerry O’
Brien had ten. The vast majority of the fish were returned
as they were under the legal limit.
All the fish were caught on the troll. The start of any kind
of productive fly fishing on Derg still at least three weeks
away.
Others who weighed in fish included Donnacha O’ Brien and
Mike Moloney who both had fish of 1lb 11ozs; Matthew Ryan
and Danny Flynn had two fish (1lb 3ozs and 15ozs); Alan
Slattery (1lb 5ozs); Sean Lyons had two fish just over the
one pound mark and John Shinners (1lb 4ozs).
The organisers wish to express a big thanks to Pat Ryan for
sponsoring the competition and providing food for the
anglers during the weigh-in at his pub.
FUTURE OF WILD TROUT FISHERIES...
Anyone interested in the future of our wild trout fisheries
should note that a very interesting presentation on the
subject will be given by Ireland’s leading expert in this
area in Nenagh on this Thursday night, March 18, at 7pm.
Dr Martin O’ Grady is a Senior Research Officer with the
Central Fisheries Board and will be speaking in the
Hibernian Inn in Pearse Street on the invitation of the
Lough Derg Anglers Association, the umbrella grouping of all
the angling clubs around Lough Derg.
Dr O’ Grady is the author of “Brown Trout in Ireland”, a
book published last year highlighting the many pressures
that our trout populations are facing today due to threats
posed by issues such as pollution, exotic species and global
warming.
The book has been published at a most opportune time, given
that the changes to the Irish trout’s environment have
altered more radically in the last four decades than over
all of the preceding era spanning back to the last Ice Age
more than 10,000 years ago.
In his book Dr O’ Grady asserts that the greatest
uncertainty from a trout fishery management perspective is
from exotic species landing on our shores – plants,
invertebrates and fish.
We here on the shores of Lough Derg are more aware of the
impact of non-native species on our own lake. For example,
the zebra mussel, a native of the Caspian Sea, has been in
the Shannon System since the 1990s and many other Inland
waters, and now even Lough Corrib. Then there were reports
last year from the Lough Derg Science Group of the arrival
of another Caspian and Black Sea native, the pink shrimp (Hemimysis
anomala), posing as yet unknown consequences for the lake’s
eco-system.
Dr O’ Grady’s bottom line is that exotic species generally
have a negative effect on native flora and fauna and lead to
a reduction in overall biodiversity. For example, he points
to the fact that the zebra mussel in Irish lakes like Derg
appears to have resulted in the extinction of our own native
freshwater Swan Mussel.
While some of the book makes grim reading in terms of the
future of our trout, O’ Grady provides case studies to show
that creating the ideal trout habitat in the spawning
streams and rivers has a hugely positive impact on
preserving stocks. For example, enhancement works by the
Shannon Regional Fisheries Board on streams flowing into
Lough Ennell in the late 1990s resulted in a 900% increase
in population.
Staying on the subject of trout, angling club delegates from
around Lough Derg will be taking a vote on the night of Dr
O’ Grady’s talk on a proposal by the Lough Derg Anglers
Association to introduce a bag limit of four trout on Lough
Derg.
Currently, we are a bit behind the times in this part of the
world as there is no bag limit for Derg even though a
four-trout daily bag limit per angler has been operating on
Lough Corrib, Lough Mask and all the tributaries of these
lakes since last year. The penalty for exceeding the limit
on the Western lakes is a €90 on-the-spot fine, confiscation
of the offender’s fishing gear and/or prosecution.
OIL SPILL ....
Anglers out fishing on the Nenagh River on the opening day
of the trout season on Monday last reported seeing an oil
slick over a long stretch of the waterway.
The Nenagh Ormond Anglers have condemned the spill and
reported the matter to North Tipperary County Council and
the Shannon Regional Fisheries Board. A spokeswoman in the
environmental section of the council said staff were on the
scene trying to find the source of the oil.
