Game Angling & Fisheries News Update

Dated Wednesday June 2nd, 2010

TROUT FISHING A LIVELY AFFAIR IN THE SHANNON REGION AS THE MAYFLY SEASON CONTINUES

It's been a hectic week in the trout angling calendar with a lot going on. Some very good fishing was reported and great trout caught , including our feature fish of the week, 9lb 12ozs, caught by Ballina angler Shane Lancaster on Lough Derg. The Mayfly season is not quite over yet on Derg and may provide a few more evenings on the gnat. Peter Gleeson keeps up up to speed on this and other stories from this part of the region. Lough Sheelin provided much sport with plenty of fish caught to a mix of mayfly, spent and a variety of sedges.  Lough Owel is fishing well when conditions are favourable and is producing some lovely fish to 4lbs.  Derravaragh produced quality fish in the Jimmy Nally Memorial Cup competition.  Last Sunday Lough Ennell Trout Preservation Association fished the Jimmy Nea Cup. Michael Flanagan keeps us up to date on these events. Eamon Cunningham of Athlone Anglers Association reports on the recent competition for the Barra Flynn Memorial Cup fished  on Lough Ree, which is the last of the dapp competitions. A plan to restore wild Salmon stocks in Lough Derg and the upper lakes of the Shannon and their tributaries was launched on Thursday of last week by the Shannon Regional Fisheries Board at their conference during Fisheries Awareness week. This can be downloaded, see the PRESS RELEASE for further info.

UPPER SHANNON

LOUGH SHEELIN

Report to Sunday week ending 30th May.

There was quite a big hatch of Mayfly on Sheelin last week but fish seem to be more interested in the spent gnat than the green fly by all accounts. Fish are also feeding on a mix of sedges, especially the Murrough, so come prepared with a range of sedge patterns in your fly box. It's good to see a lot of small fish showing again this year. Most fish caught by anglers were released. Renowned angler and angling instructor Peter O'Reilly and a northern Ireland visitor had the best reported fish of the week of  7lbs each, both caught over the weekend.

Photo: Dave Penny with a nice fish of 4.5lbs.

Peter Mc Ardle and friend  Ken Kerns from Dundalk had 20 trout to over 4lbs for 5 days fishing, most trout were in the 3lbs to 4lbs range, all caught on dry Green fly and Spent gnat. Angling guest of Mary Reilly at Finea,  Paul Power from Kildare reported catching 5 fish on a sedge in Kelly's and Plunkett's Point, he released 3 fish, fish were from 2lbs to 5lbs 2ozs. Daniel Levy reported fishing has been slower than previously. He had a few fish but all small ( under 2.5lbs) except the one in the picture below which  was 5 lb 9osz, caught on the Spent .

Cathal Mc Naughton, Co. Antrim had two trout 3lb 12ozs, 1lb 12ozs, caught on dry Murrough. Cathal missed three other good fish also. Denise Moss, Galway caught four trout, best weight 4½ lbs, released.

Eugene Mc Guinness, Drogheda caught fish of 6½lbs and 3½lbs. Eamon Ross, LSTPA caught two fish, best 4lbs.

Thomas Lynch LSTPA had some lively action on the spent gnat, with five fish,  heaviest 5.5lbs, all released. Frank Kelly, LSTPA had four fish best weight 3½lbs, released. Paddy Lyons, LSTPA had two trout averaging 2½lbs. Sean McIntyre LSTPA had two trout averaging 2½lbs. Ronan Clarke, Drogheda had a fish 3½lbs which he released.  Gene Brady, LSTPA had a trout of  5½ lbs. Gary McKiernan, LSTPA had a 4½lb trout. Paddy Delaney had a 3½ lb trout.  Most fish were sportingly released by anglers.

Prospects look very promising again on Sheelin as weather is forecast to be pleasant out of doors.

ANGLING COMPETITIONS CLASH, AS WE DRIFT INTO JUNE:  Yes, it's not getting any easier in the Angling World, and the competition scene is hectic. This week I really don’t know where to start, and we have a bit of catching up to do on some fishy pics. Good news our Angling site is almost ready to go on line, and here we will keep you up to date on all the competitions. Plus weekly and daily reports on what’s happening on the angling scene. This week we feature a few more photos from the late Peter Connolly Memorial competition. Plus the winning photo from Derravaragh last Sunday when we competed in the Jimmy Nally Memorial Cup. Results also from Ennell, and the Lakeland Anglers trip to Lough Conn. I knew I forgot something last week, yes we met Portloman lads Joseph and young John Boyne on Owel. The deadly duo landed some fine trout. Also Aigo Doyle rattled the scales on Owel with a fine trout of 4lbs. Aigo from Edenderry was fishing with Eddie and Jason Darby, who know the Midland lakes like the back of their hand. This week we have a huge Gallery of photos, if we miss some naturally we will cast back next week.

Photo: Eddie and Jason Darby pictured with Aigo Doyle.

OWEL CRACKERS: Lough Owel has produced some good Trout in recent weeks, and with the Peter season just weeks away, it's certainly looking good. On my angling adventures on Owel I met some great characters including father and son pairing Joseph and John Boyle from Portloman. That same week Eddie Darby and Son Jason was out with friend Aigo Doyle from Edenderry Co. Offaly The lads had some great fish including this beauty of 4lbs boated by Aigo.

GLORE ANGLERS: Lough Glore anglers will be in action on June 13th.On the day they will host a club pike competition on Glore. The Lake is ideal for pike angling on the fly, and I hope to give this a go sooner than later.

THAT’S IT: Next week news of Lough Lene, Glore and Sheelin competitions. i take it you are aware that next weekend is Bank Holiday. So if you are on the waterways take care and please wear a Lifejacket. Once again we have a net full of photos from the angling scene. We will have more photos from Derravaragh in next weeks Angling Focus.

LOUGH ENNELL

Mick Flanagan, Angling correspondent and photographer Mullingar reports Mobile: 087-2797270.

ENNELL ANGLERS: Last Sunday Lough Ennell Trout Preservation Association fished the Jimmy Nea Cup. On the day Seamus Eighan produced a beautiful fish of 2.40lbs to take top rod. Mullingar angler Frank Oakes finished 2nd with a fine fish of 1.49lbs. Reports of a few spent Mayfly drifting out across Ennell this week, just might have the trout on the move. Ennell anglers will be back in action on the trout competition scene in August, when the Lough Ennell Perpetual Cup will be fished.

JIMMY NALLY MEMORIAL CUP: This was a magical day on the late Jimmies favourite lake Derravaragh. Last year the first Memorial was fished on Bane and the competition rotates yearly from Bane to Derravaragh. It was a fantastic day with over 40 anglers competing on the day, plus juniors. Some nice trout were produced on the day and it was certainly a nail biting finish. You know what they say.” SO NEAR AND YET SO FAR”. Colin Cahill and yours truly produced trout of 2lbs 3oz. When competition weigh master John Cooke switched onto Kgs on the scales I was piped by 2 Grams. Mind you when you come 2nd to a seasoned International Angler, its good going. This day out is more that a competition it’s a gathering of Jimmy Nallyies friends and family members and we had a fantastic day. That evening we ventured back to Murtaghs Lounge in Multyfarnham, and enjoyed super finger food and soup. Andy Nally along with Derravaragh club Officers Paddy Ward and Tom Newman, sorted out the winners, and the late Jimmies wife Mary presented the prizes.1st Colin Cahill, 2nd Mick Flanagan, 3rd John Cooke, 4th Jimmy Cahill, 5th Tom Newman. Junior winners. Vinnie Moore, Thomas Bardon, and 3rd Clairean Keogh.

THE BARRA FLYNN MEMORIAL CUP ...

Last Sunday saw the last or our dapp competitions take place with the running of the Barra Flynn Memorial Cup and as usual it attracted a great entry with twenty one boats taking part, The day started out well showing all the signs of a good days fishing with some wind and cloud cover. However the signs can be deceiving as only four fish were brought to the scales.

The weigh in and presentation of prizes took place that evening in Sean Og’s where Anne and John Hayden along with Kate Flynn were excellent hosts and treated all the anglers to a fabulous barbeque and we were then entertained by the dulcet sounds of Patrice and Bernard Coyle for the rest of the evening. When the scales came down it was Eamon Conroy who topped the leader board with a fine trout and it was Eamon’s first ever time to use a fly rod let alone catch a fish, so well done.  It was a very close finish and in second place it was Richie Fallon and even closer behind him at three ounces lighter and in third place was Sean Kelly and the fourth prize went to Paul Fallon.

Our thanks to Kate Flynn for the very generous sponsorship of this competition and to Anne and John Hayden in Sean Og’s Bar for the superb hospitality on the night and thanks also to Geraldine Rohan who was our Captain of the Day.

LOUGH DERG

'HOOKED ON FISH' BY PETER GLEESON ANGLING CORRESPONDENT FOR THE NENAGH GUARDIAN NEWSPAPER Mob: 087-6564662.

Report dated June 2nd, 2010. From Peter Gleeson, Nenagh Guardian.

Photo: Shane Lancaster of Ballina with the largest trout caught on a fly on Lough Derg this Mayfly season. The magnificent fish of 9lbs 2ozs was hooked on Monday night, May 24, off Parker’s Point, near Castlelough.

FEMALE ANGLER CAPTURES LARGE TROUT ON LOUGH DERG ....

The Mayfly season on Lough Derg is slowly petering out, but there is still some fishing to be had at the deeper southern end of the lake.

There could yet be a few days of decent spent gnat fishing if the weather proves favourable as there was a heavy presence of spinners in the Castlelough area over the past weekend. Yet, the end of Ephemera Dancia for another year is nigh, judging by the catch latest returns.

Two of the main weigh-in stations on the lake are Ciss Ryan’s and Larkin's pub in Garrykennedy where not a single fish was weighed in on either Saturday or Sunday last.

But the fisher who hit the jackpot last Friday was Síle Corish who had a wonderful trout of 5lbs 10ozs on the grant while fishing just off the shoreline at Garrykennedy. Síle, who usually catches more fish than the majority of male anglers, spotted the trout rising for fly. She tracked the fish’s rise pattern for a couple of hours before lobby her fly under his nose and nabbing her quarry, which had two lamprey eels attached to it.

Well done to Sheila who now looks set to recapture her title as Fisherwoman of the Year in the Garrykennedy Club. Indeed, angling is a sport I would encourage other women to take up as the few I know who are involved on Lough Derg are very good anglers and are as good, if not better, than many of the men. Indeed, some of the best fishers and fly casters in the world are women.

Meanwhile, Darrin Gardiner and Shane Lancaster also had some good fishing last weekend on the southern end of the lake. Darrin had fish of 1lbs 12ozs and 1lbs 15ozs on Saturday and one of 2lbs 2ozs on Sunday. Shane had fish of 2lbs 1ozs and 1lb 8ozs on Saturday. All these trout were got on the spent gnat.

As the Mayfly season on Derg draws to a close for another year the focus has now switched to the prize presentations for those anglers lucky enough to have landed the heaviest fish over the last six weeks or so. The prize giving for the Ciss Ryan’s Pub competition in Garrykennedy will be held this Friday night in the pub at 9pm and a buffet supper will be served. Two prizes of €300 will be presented, one for the heaviest trout caught in the first half of May and the second for the heaviest trout caught in the second half of May. There will also be a prize of €150 for the heaviest trout caught in April. The Garrykennedy Fishing Club’s own prize presentation night will be held in the same pub on Saturday, June 12.

SHANNON REGIONAL FISHERIES BOARD LAUNCH A RESTORATION PLAN FOR WILD SALMON ON THE SHANNON

A plan to restore wild salmon stocks in Lough Derg and the upper lakes of the Shannon and their tributaries was launched on Thursday of last week by the Shannon Regional Fisheries Board.

The construction of dams on the river over the last century or so as well as deterioration in water quality have contributed to the decimation of wild salmon in the upper Shannon, but now the fishery board has introduced its “Shannon Salmon Restoration Plan” to restore stocks to sustainable levels.

The plan sets out a road map for addressing fish passage issues, habitat restoration and water quality concerns. The board said its plan has been developed over several years and sets out a series of concrete initiatives which together seek in the short and medium term to achieve its objective of restoring wild salmon. This launch follows an eighteen-month consultative period with all stakeholders.

Board CEO Eamon Cusack told those attending a conference in Limerick last week, organized by the board to mark Fisheries Awareness Week, that assessing obstacles to fish passage and looking at engineering solutions to aid fish migrations are core objectives of the Plan.

“This involves international experts in a review of best practice elsewhere. Hydro-acoustic surveys will be carried out to assess the passage of salmon past major dams and navigation weirs on the Shannon,” said Mr Cusack.

Under the Atlantic ARC Project, funded under the EU Interreg programme, genetic typing of River Shannon salmon will be carried out. A review of current hatchery programmes will be carried out with a strategic approach to the selection of rivers for the establishment of satellite populations of salmon in the Upper Shannon catchment.

Last Thursday’s conference staged by the board also focused on a number of initiatives already underway to restore and enhance Irish fisheries, and this column in the coming weeks will contain lots of other angling issues which were raised at the event.

FISHING FOR KIDS ...

A series of summer courses to introduce children to fishing will begin in Killaloe on June 15. “Fishing for Kids” offers a one-day and three-day course for young people to learn about angling in a friendly and safe environment. The courses are being organised by Noel Bugler of Ballina.

As part of the courses participants will be taught how to operate a standard spinning road and select various baits and lures. They will be taught how to catch a fish and unhook it and release it unharmed back into the water. For all details contact Noel Bugler at Fishing for Kids on 086-3919472 or email him at Info@fishingforkids.ie. Details can be seen on www.fishingforkids.ie
