MIDLAND LAKES HOTTING UP AS THE PETER SEASON GETS INTO FULL SWING

It has been a good week on our midland trout lake fisheries. The Peter season is getting into swing now on Owel as we write and anglers are very pleased with the fishing. Lough Sheelin is also in form with small dry sedges working well late into the evenings. It's good to note the large numbers of small wild trout showing up in the lake. Ennell which has been rather dour in the past is also fishing and worth a few evenings effort. Prospects look promising for the coming week as the Peter season peaks. On the Salmon front, The Mulkear River, Co Limerick did produce a few nice grilse over the week as water levels tapered off following recent floods. No other reports received.  TIGHT LINES!

LOUGH SHEELIN

Lough Sheelin fished well during the week particularly on Friday. A lot of small trout were seen with the best weights up to 4lbs. Dry fly fishing using a small sedge appears to be the most successful method.

The Cavan Anglers ran the Jeff White Cup on Lough Sheelin on Saturday; this is a small competition but hopes to get much bigger in the future.

The L.S.T.P.A will be running the McDonnell trout fishing competition on Saturday August 7th, this is an open competition, 11am to 6pm from Kilnahard pier, contact Eamon Ross @ 087 9436655 or Thomas Lynch 087 9132033 for further information.

89 trout were reported caught during the week, with most being released, best catches were:

Michael Kelly, Dublin – Wednesday. good fishing, 6 trout up to 2½ lbs using a small dry sedge, Thursday 2 fish, Friday was excellent fishing with 8 fish caught ranging from 1½ - 3½ lbs. All released.

John Murphy, Crover – dry fly fishing around Goreport and Coru, 4 trout averaging 1 lb to 1¼ lbs, all wild fish and all released.

Shane Clinton, Cavan aged: 7 caught a nice 1 ¼ lbs trout on July 25th, spinning.

Tim Cruthers, Northern Ireland – 1 trout @ 4lbs wet fly fishing on Saturday July 24th.

On July 25th 2 Northern Ireland anglers caught 11 trout between them averaging 1 ½ lbs, best was 3 lbs, all fish were released.

Peter Boyle, Clones – 1 trout @ 4 lbs, dry fly fishing on Friday July 23rd.

Morris Little, Cavan – 1 trout @ 3 lbs, wet fly fishing on Friday, July 23rd.

Thomas Lynch, Kilnaleck, Cavan – 6 trout on Sunday July 25th, averaging 1 ½ lbs, all released.

LOUGH ENNELL

The Green Peter is up on Ennell and anglers are having some success. Johnny O’Malley had 11 trout over the week on Peter - heaviest fish 3.5 lbs. Prospects are looking good for Peter fishing for rest of week.

LOUGH OWEL

Owel is fishing well at the moment and some good trout are being taken at night on Peters. On Tuesday night I fished with Pat Liddy and we caught 7 nice fish returning 4. Wednesday night along with Thomas Mc Mullen we boated 2 good trout the best well over 2lbs. That night we met a lot of fish. In the coming nights I hope to be on Owel, and have a full report early next week with photos.

On Wednesday August 4th on Owel we will fish the Dan Mullally Trophy. Fishing from 7pm-11pm.

MULKEAR RIVER SALMON FISHING REPORT, CO LIMERICK

Salmon fishing was fair to good over the week on the Mulkear River, with fish trickling into the system each day. Water levels are good at time of writing. Two Italian anglers, angling guests of Millbank Angling Centre had two grilse to 6lbs on Sunday on fly.  French anglers in a party of three fished for Salmon with Flying C and also fished for trout on the upper stretches of the Mulkear. One member of the party had three grilse. Water levels are still good on the Mulkear and prospects remain promising for Salmon fishing over the coming days. Tight Lines!
