GREEN PETER AND MURROUGHS HAVE TROUT ANGLERS IN A FRENZY
It has been a good week once again on our
midland trout lake fisheries with the Peter and Murrough fishing
peaking as we write. First up is Lough Sheelin which is
rewarding anglers fishing late into the evening with small brown
sedges. The Mullingar lakes are also in form with some excellent late
night Peter fishing reported on Lough Owel. Even Ennell which can be a
dour lake is throwing up some good fish for anglers Peter fishing late
into the evening. Catch up on these and other stories in our main
angling report below. Prospects are looking good for the coming week,
although some anglers claim that the peak of the Peter fishing is
over. TIGHT LINES!
LOUGH SHEELIN
Week Ending Sunday August 1st, 2010
Lough Sheelin fished well during the week. Trout were mainly caught
dry fly fishing using very small sedge patterns but some wet fly
fishing proved successful as well. There was a small hatch of Green
Peter on the lake late in the evening from 10pm onwards.
A total of 96 fish were officially recorded for the week with a lot of
small trout showing to 1lb. All small trout were released.
Samples of catches this week were:
Vincent Clarke, Grousehall, Cavan – 2 trout at 1½ lbs dry fly fishing.
Pat Clarke, Baileboro, Cavan – 3 trout averaging 1 ½ lbs wet fly
fishing.
Walter and Susan Byrne, Edenderry – on Saturday July 31st 8 fish, best
was 3 lbs, rest averaged up to 2 lbs, all were released.
Thomas Lynch, Omard, Kilnaleck fished on Tuesday, Friday and Sunday
totalling 18 fish, best 4lbs and 3 ½ lbs, the remainder of the trout
averaged from 1¼ lbs upwards.
The L.S.T.P.A will be running the McDonnell trout fishing competition
on Saturday August 7th, this is an open competition, 11am to 6pm from
Kilnahard pier, contact Eamon Ross @ 087 9436655 or Thomas Lynch 087
9132033 for further information.
Gary McKiernan, Corlesmore, Cavan caught 1 trout of
4lbs on Tuesday and had a good day with 8 trout on Friday, all
released.
Patsy Smith, Cavan had 2 trout at 1 ½ lbs.
Thomas Harton, Kilnaleck, Cavan reported a large number of trout
caught during the week dry fly fishing, fish averaged from 1½ - 2 lbs,
all released.
Michael Kelly, Dublin had 17 trout over the week, with the best on
Friday at 3lbs. All fish were caught on the dry fly and all were
released.
LOUGH O'FLYNN
There were very few anglers out on Lough O'Flynn.
After a very unsettled week weather-wise, water levels are rising in
the catchment. It is also very windy, north-westeries which are blowing
quite hard as we write. Last Tuesday week July 27th, Bernard Mannion and Matt Foley fished the lake over a 3.5 hour session. They
caught 11 trout between them and released most, best 1.5lbs. All fish
were caught on Dabblers. Very lively fishing was the comment.
LOUGH ENNELL
There was news of a few nice wild trout
coming from Ennell late into the night. This is heart warming as
L.E.T.P.A. have the Lough Ennell Perpetual Cup coming up in of August.
Yes, it’s hard to believe we are into August, soon we will be
mentioning end of season trout competitions. Not to worry, we will
have some net bursting pike action, and also will keep in tough with
some of our top Rainbow Trout fisheries which open all year round.
News also this week of another Invasive discovered in an Irish River.
ENNELL ANGLERS: We are receiving reports of some good
fish coming from Ennell also late at night. It’s a hard lake to crack
at the best of times, but the trout are top class. Lough Ennell Trout
Preservation Association have the Lough Ennell Perpetual Cup coming on
line at the end of August. This is a day time trout fly fishing
competition, hopefully a few good fish will take the fly in day light
hours on the day. The starting point will be Whitebridge Bay, and in
the coming weeks we will have fishing times.
ENNELL FAMILY DAY: Lough Ennell will be in action this Sunday
August 8th, weather permitting. On the day the family all species
competition will take place. Fishing is from 11am-5pm, and some good
pike and perch, and even maybe a trout will come on line.

LOUGH OWEL

It’s all happening on the fly fishing scene as we
go to print this week. Lough Owel has started to produce cracking
trout on the Green Peter and Murrough. We have a great photo of
one of Lough Owel's top anglers back in action after an illness.
Yes Andy Boyle better known in the Angling World as the “Nodger”
is back fighting fit and fired up for the coming Lough Owel
competitions. Great to see you back on the lake Andy. I spent a
few late nights on Owel, and photographed some local and visiting
anglers with fine catches.
Last week we ventured out onto Lough Owel and checked
out the Peter and Murrough situation. Sure enough some fly life was
buzzing around late at night. It was a case of hit and miss some
nights, but if you were in the right place just at dark and the Sedge
hatch started you were in business. One of the nights I fished Owel I
was joined by Pad Liddy of Mullingar Golf Club. Pat is a dab hand at
the fishing game and we boated 7 trout on the night, some released. No real monsters
but plenty of action even before dark. On Friday night Thomas McMullen
dropped down and we had a few real Owel crackers. That night fly
hatches were scarce, but the fish we caught made up for it. Earlier in
the week Andy Boyle and Mick McCormack also hit it right, and produced
some super trout. Many anglers are flocking to Owel for the Peter
fishing, and in the coming week more good trout will come on line.
DAN MULLALLY TROPHY: On Wednesday night August 4th Lough
Owel Trout Preservation Association will host the Dan Mullally Trophy.
This evening competition fished from 7pm-11pm, is pencilled in to
clash with the Peter and Murrough season, and its looking good. It the
lakes continues to fish as in previous night, you will need good trout
to be in the prizes. The club has a 3 fish bag limit on all trout
competitions, plus a 13-inch size limit. Anglers wishing to fish this
competition are more that welcome to join L.O.T.P.A. on the night. The
club also has the Patti Doolin Perpetual Shield on August 15th, and
this 11am-7pm will draw a great turn out of anglers. More on this in
the coming weeks.

LITTLE BROSNA & CAMCOR
RIVER
Water levels are now low on the Camcor
and Little Brosna systems, even though there has been some rain most
days. A few local anglers fly fishing very late into the night are
getting the odd Croneen on the Camcor River. Other than that
fishing has been rather patchy, with only the very odd fish reported
caught at other times.
SALMON
FISHING REPORT
MULKEAR RIVER, CO LIMERICK
Water levels have dropped well back on last week's
levels and
Salmon are proving more difficult to catch on the Mulkear in recent
days. A Spanish angler, angling guest of Millbank House, did have success spinning a 'flying C'
over the week. He caught and released 6 grilse 4lbs to
6lbs in total. He also had success fly fishing for trout
down along the main Mulkear channel. Unless water levels rise once
again, angling prospects don't look so promising for the coming week.
Water levels are at normal height and clarity at time of writing.
Reported by Richard Keays, Millbank Angling Centre.

SALMON
FISHING REPORT
RIVER FEALE, CO
KERRY
Some Salmon did run the River Feale in recent floods
and fish were caught, mostly spinning. Water
levels are now low but Salmon are reluctant to take as they become
resident in the pools. Another flood is needed to get fish moving
once again.
