SEDGES ACCOUNT FOR SOME GOOD TROUT ON OUR MIDLAND TROUT
LAKES
Trout fishing continues on a positive
note on our midland managed lake fisheries, especially Lough Sheelin,
Owel and Ennell. There has been some excellent fishing on Lough Acalla
in Co Galway. Anglers are having some success fishing late into dusk on the Camcor River, with a few croneen reported caught. With lower water
levels, Salmon fishing has been slow on the Feale and Mulkear Rivers.
Drier, warmer an more settled weather is forecast from the weekend,
prospects look promising again. TIGHT LINES!
LOUGH SHEELIN, CO
CAVAN
Week Ending Sunday August 8th, 2010
A large number of anglers fished the lake during the week. There are
very small hatches of Green Peter on the lake and any sighted were
late into the evening. There was a decline in the Green Peter hatches
last year and this year seems consistent with that.
Like other weeks, there are vast
numbers of small fish being seen and caught (all released)
although this week has seen a marked increase in heavier fish being
caught – 3lbs to 4 ½lbs. The fish are lovely wild fish in very good
condition. All areas of the lake fished well, the best spots were
around Church Island, Goreport and Bog Bay.
127 fish were recorded for the week, the increase in angling activity probably attributed
to the bank holiday weekend.
The McDonnell open trout fishing competition, organised by the
L.S.T.P.A was held on Lough Sheelin on Saturday August 7th. 48 anglers
took part with 14 anglers weighing trout. Numerous trout were
released. The winners were as follows:
-
1st - Vinny Hughes, Clones – 1 trout
of 4 ½lbs wet fly fishing.
-
2nd - Peter Roche, Ballina, Co. Mayo –
1 trout @ 3 ¾ lbs wet fly fishing using a small sedge.
-
3rd – Paul McArdle, Castleblayney – 1
trout @ 3 lbs 11ozs
-
4th – Pat Farrelly, Kells – 1 trout at
3 ½ lbs.

released.
Michael Kelly, Dublin had
27 trout for the week, most fish were
released.
All were caught dry fly fishing using
a small sedge. On Wednesday August 5th 6 trout were caught, best 3lbs,
Thursday 12 fish, 6 @ 3lbs each, 1 @ 4lbs. 9 fish were caught on
Friday, best was 4¼ lbs. All these trout were wild and in very good
condition. Garry McKiernan, Corlesmore, Cavan – Tuesday August 4th had
5 trout, dry fly fishing, fish ranged from 1 ½ - 4 lbs in weight, all
were released. Cahill Rush, Northern Ireland had 4 trout caught on

good again this week.

SALMON
FISHING REPORT
MULKEAR RIVER, CO LIMERICK
It has been a quiet week on the River Mulkear with few
anglers fishing, as water levels have dropped back to normal summer levels. There are plenty of
resident Salmon

Another flood is needed.
