MORE ANGLING ACTIVITY EVIDENT ON
ENNELL WITH HUGE HATCHES OF DUCKFLY
There were huge hatches of
duclfly on Ennell last week and anglers had some success in the late
evenings. Lough Owel was patchy enough even though there were
hatches of duckfly. Lough O'Flynn is still high but
dropping slowly as we write with settled weather continuing. 14
anglers fished the lake on and off over the week and were satisfied
with their fishing by all accounts.
The Annual All Ireland Trout Angling Match for anglers with
special needs run by Loch an Dochais takes place at Loch an Dochais,
Kilcormac, Co Offaly on Sunday 30th May 2010, see main report for
details. It looks like the appearance of the Mayfly on Derg is going
to be a bit late this year, given the freezing winter that we have
experienced. Our angling columnist Peter Gleeson saw just one solitary Mayfly on the lake
off Illaunmore on Sunday, so it would seem the peak of the hatch
will be several weeks away. Please be aware that the second last
talk in the series of illustrated talks presented by MulkearLIFE
takes place tonight, Wednesdays 21st April @ 8pm, in the Strand
Hotel, Ennis Road, Limerick. These talks form part of the
MulkearLIFE’s Environmental Educational Programme (www.mulkearlife.com).
All are welcome and it's free. TIGHT LINES!
UPPER
SHANNON
LOUGH
SHEELIN
There wasn't a lot of anglers out last week. Some of the regulars
did okay. Michael Kelly from Co Dublin had 7 fish over 3 days.
Kevin Sheridan from Cavan fished on Saturday and
had a 4lb 5oz trout and a 3lb trout. Night frosts are not helping
the fishing. Milder weather is on the way.
NB:
It has come to our attention that there is a type error in the trolling
Bye Law regulation in our recently published Lough Sheelin pocket guide under the Angling Rules, which states that
trolling is allowed from March 1st, this is incorrect. It should
read May 1st. Trolling is not permitted from March 1st to April
30th inclusive, please be aware of this. Revised guides will be
available as soon as possible and we will notify you of their
availability.
We apologise for this error and will re-send anglers who requested
our guides online the corrected version in due course. Thank you.

LOUGH O'FLYNN & UPPER RIVER SUCK
Lough O'Flynn is still high but dropping slowly as we write with
settled weather continuing. 14 anglers fished the lake on and off
over the week. Anglers were satisfied with their fishing by all
accounts. The best report was from regulars to the lake Matt Foley
from Castlerea and Bernard Mannion. They fished over the weekend.
Bernard Mannion had 7 fish on a Hares Ear nymph, released 4 fish,
best fish was 1.5lbs. On Sunday another keen angler Anthony Baggot
fished a short session of about two hours. He landed one fish of
1.5lbs and missed another fish. Paul Mc Loughlin from the
Whitehouse Hotel Ballinlough had three fish, fishing for the first
time on O'Flynn on Monday week last. Anglers fishing from the
eastern shore once again caught a few nice fish. Tributaries of
the upper River Suck fished okay with anglers reporting a number
of small fish to 10 inches. Conditions should be favourable
for the coming week.

Fisheries Inspector Co Roscommon at 087 2536064.
MID SHANNON AREA
LOUGH OWEL
Lough Owel has slowed down of late due to frosty nights. Fishing
was particularly slow on Sunday due to bright calm conditions.
There were hatches of Duckfly. Fishing should pick up again with
much milder weather to return from Friday onwards.
The O'Malley Cup was fished on Owel. 28 anglers returned 8
trout, heaviest fish of 3lbs.
LOUGH ENNELL
Trout are being caught on Ennell in the late
evenings on the Duckfly and variants.
Mick Flanagan, Angling correspondent and photographer Mullingar reports on
March 30th. Mobile: 087-2797270.
ENNELL: Huge hatches of
Duck- Fly are hatching on Ennell and I spent a day
on the Lake last weekend. Even though I drifted
through huge hatches I did not see a trout feed on
the surface. I was chatting to some very experienced
Ennell anglers and they told me early morning or
late evening is the best chance of hooking up with
an Ennell trout. It’s worth checking in the coming
week.

LOUGH DERG
'HOOKED ON FISH' BY PETER GLEESON ANGLING CORRESPONDENT FOR THE NENAGH
GUARDIAN NEWSPAPER Mob: 087-6564662.
Report dated April 21st, 2010.
LOUGH DERG ....
Bream on a fly rod!
There were many anglers out on Lough Derg on Sunday last
to compete in the Giblin Cup trout wetfly competition.
The fishing was extremely poor with only seven fish being
produced for the weigh-in by the 100 anglers who took part
in the event. The winner was Scariff native Paul O’ Meara
with a fish of 2lbs 9ozs. Second was Russell Weston of
Plymouth (2lbs 4ozs) and third was Paul Clohessy, Limerick
(2lbs 3ozs).
Several anglers from the North Tipperary side of the lake
took part but none managed to land a fish over the legal
limit of 14 inches. For most it was a fishless day,
marking a bad start to what is officially seen as the
first of the fly fishing on the Lough Derg.
I tried a few hours trout fishing myself on Sunday, with
some surprising results. Myself and my fishing buddy Liam
Young set out from Dromineer each fishing a team of three
nymphs on sink tip lines.
Casting close to “The Iron Door” my rod suddenly bent and
I thought I had a fine trout. But no, it was a bream of
three pounds, which, in fact, fought just as gallantly as
a trout before being landed, photographed and put back. A
few hours later Liam had a similar sized bream on a tiny
nymph in the same location. We discovered that you don’t
always have to hook a trout to have great fun on a fly rod
and we plan to hunt down some more bream with the same
tactics during the summer months when the peak of the
trout season is over.
But the most interesting episode of our angling on Sunday
was when we spotted this huge bird flying high over the
trees at the mouth of Dromineer Bay. We both believe what
we saw was an eagle and other anglers I spoke to who saw
the creature also claim that the bird was an eagle. It had
a wing span of about five to six feet and its feathers
were brown and beige. Certainly the herons we saw on the
lake were mere sparrows in comparison to this great bird.
Another angler told me it was a giant Buzzard, a bird of
prey that has been living in the lakeside district for a
number of years.
MAYFLY SEASON
It looks like the appearance of the Mayfly on the lake is
going to be a bit late this year, given the freezing
winter that we have experienced. We saw just one solitary
Mayfly on the lake off Illaunmore on Sunday, so it would
seem the peak of the hatch will be several weeks away.
The first of the Mayfly Competitions hosted by
Garrykennedy Fishing Club starts this Sunday with the
Kevin Reynolds trophy up for grabs. Meanwhile,
Ballina-Killaloe Angling Club team up with Mountshannon
Anglers for an inter-club competition on Sunday. The
weigh-in will be in Mountshannon Hotel at 8pm.
Just a reminder to anglers, too, about the hazards to
birdlife by discarding tangled fishing line on the shores
of the lake. One angler reported last week that a swan had
become tangled up in the line on the shores of Youghal Bay
and had to be rescued.
BIODIVERSITY PROJECT LOUGH DERG ...
A briefing on the progress being made by scientists on the
Lough Derg Native Fish Bio-Diversity Project will be
presented in Garrykennedy Fishing Club clubhouse on
Wednesday, April 28 at 7.30pm.
This will be an ideal opportunity for anglers to find out
about the different types of trout that are living in
Lough Derg. The project’s lead scientist Fran Igoe will
cover issues such as the feeding habits of trout and
potential threats to their future.
The project, which has been going on for the past number
of years, has already established that there are a number
of distinctly different genetic species of trout in the
lake. It aims to establish the rivers where these
different species of trout spawn. By doing so it will
enable more effective management of the trout fishery in
Lough Derg in future.
The study is also looking at lamprey eels in the lake in a
bid to establish if there is a landlocked freshwater
species of these eel in Lough Derg.
