SOME EXCELLENT GAME
FISHING IN THE SHANNON REGION THIS WEEK AS WEATHER SETTLES DOWN
Lough Sheelin fished well
last week despite the poor weather. Dry sedges size 14 & 16's proved
the best choice. There was excellent reports from Lough Owel
and there was a successful outing on the lake on Sunday for the Clonhugh Cup
. Ennell is fishing in the evening time. There's lots
of juvenile fish showing. Dapping and dry fly fishing with the Daddy
is getting good results on Lough O'Flynn. Lough Acalla continues to fish well.
The competition for the Social Committee Cup took place last Sunday
on Lough Ree in wet and windy conditions. Athlone Anglers
Association report on this and the upcoming competitions on the
lake to the end of the season. The Camcor River in Birr should pick
up as the river settles after a series of floods.
There was a succession of
high floods on our Salmon rivers over the week. The Feale fished
when conditions were favourable. Good Salmon fishing is expected
over the coming days as water levels recover. TIGHT LINES!
UPPER
SHANNON
LOUGH
SHEELIN
Lough Sheelin fished well last week
despite the poor weather. Dry sedges size 14 & 16's proved the
best choice of fly. The advice is to look into bays for early
hatches of Welshman's Buttons or try your luck using Claret
Dabblers size 12 and 14s.
Michael Kelly had a good week. In
three trips he caught and released 23 fish, most on dry sedges.
Andrew Brown L.S.T.P.A. had 2 fish, best over 4lbs, both fish
released. Oliver Harten L.S.T.P.A. had a fish of 5.25lbs. John
Murphy caught and released 4 fish to 2lbs.
The L.S.T.P.A. Annual Stream
Rehabilitation Annual competition will be held on Sheelin On
Saturday the 3rd of October – details of which can be found on web
site

LOUGH O'FLYNN & UPPER RIVER SUCK
The Upper Suck system is at flood level
at time of writing. Anglers who braved the elements had lively fishing
on O'Flynn. They observed big hatches of Daddies on the lake. Best
methods were dry fly fishing and dapping the Daddy. Philip Mc Goldrick
dapped the Daddy for 3.5 hours last Saturday evening from 3pm to
6.30pm. He had 4 good fish and met several others. Anthony Baggott had
three fish dry fly fishing and missed many more fish in a short
session. Two other anglers from the Roscommon area had 6 fish in a
short session on Thursday evening. Next Saturday the Ballinlough
anglers are hosting an Introduction to fishing for junior anglers. All
are welcome to come along. Meeting at Lough O'Flynn at 1.30. All will
be given an opportunity to learn and improve their fishing skills from
some of the best anglers in the area who will be available on the day.
Anglers interested, please contact John Ryan, mobile number below.
Prospects look good as weather settles.

Owel has been fishing
brilliantly over the past week. Some regular anglers
to the lake have commented that the fishing on Owel
has been the best ever. One angler fishing the
Clonhugh Cup reported catching 24 trout, releasing
21 fish. Anglers are meeting a lot of fish late in
the evening. Best flies were buzzers and olives. The
odd very small hatch of Peters were evident.

THREE GENERATIONS OF MORANS WIN SOCIAL COMMITTEE CUP .....
The competition for the Social Committee Cup took place last Sunday
which turned out to be just like the last few Sundays, wet and
windy. Regardless of the weather the anglers still turned up in
numbers with twenty seven boats taking part and on the day the
fishing was good with plenty of small fish being caught but they
weren’t all small and some big fish were brought to the scales and
there was none bigger than the one which the three generations of
the Moran family caught and released.
The weigh in and presentation of prizes took place that evening in
the newly refurbished Sean Og’s Bar in Irishtown where Ann and John
Hayden along with Paddy Martin were excellent hosts. This was the
clubs first time to have a presentation here and after the excellent
welcome we received we will definitely be back. When the scales came
down it was the three generations of the Moran family, granddad
Tommy along with his son Anthony and his son Reece, who topped the
leader board with a fantastic trout weighing 6lb 13ozs 9drms. It
seems it was a day for families winning prizes as in second place
with a great fish weighing 3lb 12ozs 10drms was Christy Cox and
Christy Cox Jnr. Continuing the family theme it was father and son,
Thomas Killian and Paddy Killian, who claimed third spot with their
2lb 10oz 12drm trout while another member of the family, Thomas
Killian Jnr, took fourth place for his 2lb 7oz 6drm trout. The fifth
and final spot went to brothers Paul and Joe Fallon for their 2lb
1oz trout.
Thanks to Ann and John Hayden and Paddy Martin for their very
generous sponsorship of this competition and for the excellent
hospitality on the night and thanks also to Tommy Moran who was our
Captain of The Day.
WYKES GAFFNEY MEMORIAL CUP ....
Our last official competition of the season takes place next Sunday
when we will be fishing for the Wykes Gaffey Memorial Cup. The start
will be at Gallagher’s at 10.30am and will finish with lines up at
6.00pm. The weigh in and presentation of prizes will take place in
the Coosan Tavern with the scales down at 8.30pm sharp and catch and
release will also be facilitated.
