GOOD TROUT FISHING CONTINUES ON LOUGH OWEL AND ENNELL

Trout fishing has been mixed with very poor weather, lot's of wind and rain. Fishing has slowed down on Sheelin but remains lively on Lough Owel with good bags of trout reported particularly during late evening. Ennell too is fishing in the evening time.  Another wet and windy day was what greeted the Athlone Anglers when they took to Lough Ree last Sunday to fish the competition for the Conway Conroy Cup. Next Sunday, 6th September, the competition for the Social Committee Cup will take place on Ree and as usual will start from Gallagher’s at 10.30am and finish with lines up at 6.00pm. The Athlone Anglers Association reports.

On Tuesday last Salmon fishing was good on the Mulcair with fresh fish running. We received reports of a fine 17lb Salmon caught and another 11lb fish was reported. The Mulcair is out of order for fishing at present due to the heavy rain but should be suitable by Friday. The River Feale is in high yellow flood also as we write and there will be no fishing until the water drops back and clears - A good run of Salmon is expected in both systems over the coming days.  TIGHT LINES!

UPPER SHANNON

LOUGH SHEELIN

Fishing has been slow this week due to the poor weather conditions. We received some catch returns from a number of  L.S.T.P.A. members who  regularly fish Sheelin. Peter Mc Cardle and Ken Cairns caught and released 14 trout for three trips, best two fish were 4.4lbs and 4lbs. Michael Kelly caught and released 9 trout over three trips, best fish 4.75lbs. Thomas Lynch had 4 trout to 2.75lbs. Most of the fish were caught on sedges.

LOUGH O'FLYNN & UPPER RIVER SUCK

Water levels are described as comparable with what can be expected in high winter. The miserable weather didn't encourage many anglersto get out and about. Two  regular anglers Matt Foley and Bernard Mannion had 12 fish between them on Saturday, best fish 2.5lbs. All fish were caught on muddlers and dabblers. They were very pleased with the fishing, despite the conditions. John Connolly fished a short session on Saturday and had 1 fish dapping and lost another. Well known coarse match angler Bill Cassidy tried his hand at some trout fishing on the lake on Thursday last. It was a difficult day with blustery winds and very wet conditions. Bill had two fish on the one cast. He landed the nearer fish on the dropper, a fish of 1.5lbs. He enjoyed the evenings experience. Hopefully the weather will settle down.

THE CONWAY CONROY CUP ....

Another wet and windy day was what greeted the Athlone Anglers when they took to the lake last Sunday when the competition for the Conway Conroy Cup took place. Twenty eight boats took part with those who were trolling having the best fishing while those using flies or dapping found the going a bit tougher. Ray Dowling and Brian Conway had a fantastic days fishing when they landed and released fifteen trout and they weren’t the only ones with several boats reporting large numbers of trout in the one to one and a half pound range all of which were released and also released was the fantastic winning fish caught by Karl Unwin and George Price
The weigh in and presentation of prizes took place that evening in the Coosan Tavern where Michael Murphy and his staff were at their usual excellent in the hospitality stakes. When the scales came down at half eight it was the 5lb 3oz trout caught and released by Karl Unwin and George Price that topped the list and they duly receive the fantastic Conway Conroy Cup. In second place was John Molloy and Jack Devine with a trout weighing 4lb 7ozs 6drms, this was Jacks first day trout fishing and after catching four fish on his first day out we think he’ll be back. Third place went to Ray Dowling and Brian Conway for their 3lb 10oz 4drm trout while fourth place went to Thomas Killion for his trout of 2lb 14oz 12drms. The fifth and final spot went to Sean Kelly who weighed in a trout of 2lb 4oz12drms.
Thanks to both the Conway and Conroy families for their continued and generous sponsorship of this competition and to Michael Murphy and his staff for the excellent hospitality.
