UPPER SHANNON

LOUGH SHEELIN

Autumn is setting in and the evenings are getting cool with the first night frost last night. Anglers fishing the lake are getting the best results fishing with wetflies. Fly hatches are sparse now as the season nears an end for this year, a memorable angling season on Sheelin. John Murphy and friend Roughan Ruckley from Scotland caught and released 11 trout between them to over 2lbs. P. Orange and friends caught 12 trout on wet flies over the week. Michael Kelly had 12 fish to 2.5lbs, all released.

LOUGH SHEELIN STREAM ENHANCEMENT COMPETITION

Report by the L.S.T.P.A.

The Lough Sheelin Trout Protection Association held its annual Sheelin Stream Enhancement Competition on Saturday 3rd October. The top 20 trout averaged 3.15lbs. The overall average weight was 2.4llbs.

This is now the largest one day fly- fishing competition in the country with 266 anglers from Ireland and the United Kingdom fishing this event. Such is the scale of the event boats had to be launched from Chambers Bay, The ShRFB headquarters at Kilnahard, the public pier at Kilnahard and also from the public pier at Crover. In order to protect as many young trout as possible a minimum size of 15 inches was in place for the competition which is unique and testament to the quality of wild brown trout that Lough Sheelin produces. Fishing conditions were very difficult on the day with strong westerly winds, never the less over 40 fish exceeding 15 inches were weighed in.

The winner of the competition was Peter McCardle with a trout of 5.34 pounds. He was later presented with his prize 19 foot Sheelin boat by Michael McCabe sponsor of the first prize. Second place went to Richard McDermott with a trout of 4.68lbs and his prize was a 6hp outboard. In third place was Madeleine Kelly with a trout of 4.58 pounds.

LOUGH O'FLYNN & UPPER RIVER SUCK

The weather and water levels were good for angling. Very few anglers were out fishing though. On Friday, 86 year old Mickey Maurice from Castlerea, accompanied his friend Joe Flynn for a session on O'Flynn. Mickey had 5 nice fish over 1.5lbs, caught on a Green Peter, Claret Dabbler and Daddy. Joe was spinning with tiny lures and had 1 trout and lost two others. Two other anglers tried their hand at the dry fly on Thursday. They observed a big rise of trout and hooked and lost two trout. The rise finished as quickly as it came on.
