EXCELLENT MAYFLY SEASON
CONTINUES ON LOUGH REE AND OTHER FISHERIES
It's been a good period for
trout angling and the Mayfly season has been excellent. Lough Sheelin fished very well
early last week, particularly on the hatching mayfly. Such is the
extent of the hatch on Sheelin
that it is inevitable that fish will be feeding more and more
on the emerging nymph and this seems to have slowed down the activity on the surface.
There were enormous falls of spent mayfly each evening but of late
there is a disappointing rise of fish, which is contrary to the
previous weeks fishing with some excellent sport reported on the dry
green fly. The Mayfly season has been excellent on Lough Ree over
the past 10 days or so and way ahead of this time last year with
100's of fish reported caught on the dapp, dry fly and also wetflies
have been getting results.
The competition for the Barra Flynn
Memorial Cup took place last Sunday on Lough Ree and as always
attracted a great turnout with twenty one boats taking part. Thirty
anglers returned 77 trout on Lough Owel for the weekending to May
24th, heaviest fish 2.5 lbs. All anglers reported a very
good week on Lough Acalla, best fish of the week was a Rainbow of
4lbs.
The ShRFB has received a
number of reports of land locked Lamprey attached onto trout during the mayfly
season to date. We need to get feedback for scientific purposes from
any angler who catches such a trout - see main report and
DOWNLOAD A FACT SHEET HERE.
There has been an
improvement in Salmon angling on the River Feale with up to 20
Salmon reported caught for the week, 12 fish were confirmed by the
ShRFB. There were some good fish too, hitting double figures to
12lbs. Angling conditions were favourable particularly for the
spinner and worm. Prospects look good for the weekend and should be
suitable for the fly. TIGHT LINES!

Lough Sheelin fished very well early
last week, particularly
on the hatching mayfly. Such is the extent of the hatch that it is
inevitable that fish will be feeding more and more on the emerging
nymph and this seems to have slowed down the activity on the surface.
There were enormous falls of spent mayfly each evening but of late
there is a disappointing rise of fish. Early on in the week a good
number of anglers reported over 150 trout caught and released.
Once again some good fish were landed. The heaviest reported fish
was our feature fish and catch of the week at 10lbs for Tony
Harton L.S.T.P.A. Tony
caught the trout off Merry Point, the fish was feeding on hatching
mayfly. Tony quickly released the fish back into the water, it
should be pointed out for anglers releasing trout that speed is
essential and no fish should be out of the water for more than 40
seconds, better still to release the fish in the water if
possible. David Mc Neill caught and released 13 trout over a few
days, best trout 6lbs on the dry green fly. Sean Mc Entyre had 8
fish averaging 2.5lbs, all released. Aidan Rush from Northern
Ireland had a nice fish of 6.5lbs on the green fly. Ross Mc Mahon
had 8 fish up to 5lbs, all released. John Murphy L.S.T.P.A. had 3
fish, heaviest 4lbs, all on the green fly. Presently there are
still good hatches of green fly evident. However strong winds are
temporarily hampering fishing as we write. Prospects look better
for the June holiday weekend with warm weather on the way. more
next week.

LOUGH REE
The Mayfly season has been excellent on Lough Ree
over the past 10 days or so and way ahead of this
time last year. Anglers reported 100's of fish
caught on the dapp, dry fly and also wetflies have
been getting results. Over the weekend there was a
great fall of gnat with numerous fish reported
caught over the 6lb mark. The better fishing by all
accounts has been on the western shoreline. It was
also good to hear that most anglers are now
releasing most of their catch and keeping only the
odd fish. The prospects look very promising for the
holiday weekend. Tight Lines!

Mayfly 2009
Looking at the past 5 years of Mayfly fishing in
Ireland the one consistency emerging has been
weather with exception of 2007. Good weather in
April brings Mayfly hatches on early and in 2007
most anglers were caught with the early arrival of
the fly. For the other years April weather has been
poor with high rain fall and low temperatures. 2009
was no different however the fly appeared as
expected on most lakes on time. My fishing started
on the 11th of May and terminated on the 21st and
was very good fishing experience with a best fish of
7lbs. 4ozs. and a good number over 3lbs. What was
apparent over the period was the increasing
difficult to catch as the days went by, this was
further complicated by the change in weather
conditions necessitating a corresponding pattern
change. Evening spent gnat was non existent because
of wind and rain, occasionally there were
intermittent falls during the day and once again the
switch was all important. My most successful
patterns were crippled Mayfly, Fanwing, Green drake,
GOB, Copydex spent and the Mosely for the
ovipositing female.

THE BARRA FLYNN MEMORIAL CUP ...
The competition for the Barra Flynn
Memorial Cup took place last Sunday and as always attracted a
great turnout with twenty one boats taking part. The day itself
was bright with some cloud and with the wind from the south west
hopes were high for a good days fishing but trout were to prove
scarce on the day however late in the afternoon Ray Dowling
managed to land a great trout to win the cup.
The weigh in and presentation of prizes took place that evening in
the Olive Bar where Keane Moran and Eamon Cummins were our
excellent hosts. When the scales came down Ray Dowling topped the
leader board with a fantastic 6lb 1oz 10drms trout and won the
beautiful Barra Flynn Memorial Cup. Ray was fishing that day with
his sister Helen Conway and brother in law Dominic Conway and with
Dominic on the net there was a few scary attempts at landing this
great fish but Ray wasn’t letting him get away and Dominic
eventually managed to scoop him up, he was promptly weighed and
returned to the lake to give someone else a battle on another day.
Second Place went to Sean Kelly for his trout which was almost two
pounds lighter at 4lbs 2ozs and this trout was also returned to
the lake while third place went to George Price for his trout
which weighed in at 3lb 6ozs 8drms. The fourth and final spot went
to Conor Hannon for his 2lb 11oz trout.
Thanks to Kate Flynn for her generous sponsorship of this
competition which is now in its fifth year and to Geraldine Rohan
who was our Captain of the Day.

All anglers reported a very good week on Lough

fishing was good at all times of the day with some
good sedge hatches. Polih angler Krystian Sikorski
had the best fish of the week, a Rainbow of 4lbs
caught on a Green Peter. Dermot Dowd from
Ballinasloe also had a nice fish of 3.5lbs. Chris
Connaughton from Williamstown Co Galway reported
fishing as consistent with a lot of fish rising.
There were many fish caught in the weight range of
1.5lbs to 2lbs. Flies that worked well were Green
Peter, Green and Brown Olives, Pheasant tail, Black
Pennell and Murrough.

LAMPREY REPORTS ON LOUGH DERG
The ShRFB has received a number of reports of Lamprey attached
onto trout during the mayfly season to date. If any angler comes
in contact with these we would request you would take a photo of
the mouth parts of the lamprey - by the teeth we can distinguish
what species they are. If possible keeping the full specimen
would greatly assist us in gathering further scientific
information on Lamprey in Lough Derg. Please record the date and
location, where they were caught and report to HQ 061-300238
where we can arrange collection of the sample. You can also
