Game Angling & Fisheries News Update dated

dated Wednesday March 4th, 2009

MIXED FISHING RESULTS FOR TROUT AND SALMON ANGLERS  ON A COOL OPENING DAY LAST SUNDAY

The season kicked off last Sunday March 1st on a cool but bright day on many of our waters. 12 anglers fished on Lough O'Flynn on Sunday and did manage a few good fish to 3lbs using wet flies. The first outing of the Athlone Anglers Association was fished on Lough Ree on Sunday in practically ideal weather conditions and it was no wonder that twenty five boats full of eager anglers turned up on the day. The fishing was sporadic with some reporting good catches while others spent the day without even getting a pull. On the River Feale Salmon anglers didn't fare that well either with no fresh fish caught over the opening few days even though there was a small fresh on the river.  The I.D.F.F.A. (Irish Disabled Fly Fishing Association) are calling on anglers with disabilities young and old, advanced or beginners to contact the Association as they are recruiting members presently.  See THEIR POSTER  Weather has become unsettled over the opening days of the season following a dry February and much colder with falls of hail, sleet and snow.  TIGHT LINES AND SAFE ANGLING IN 2009

TONY TAKES UP WHERE HE LEFT OFF! ...

Last Sunday saw the first competition of the year take place and with practically ideal weather conditions it was no wonder that twenty five boats full of eager anglers turned up on the shoreline. The fishing on the day was sporadic with some reporting good catches while others spent the day without even getting a pull but it is in exactly those sorts of conditions that last year’s Angler of The Year, Tony Doolan, thrives and this competition turned out to be no exception.
The weigh in and presentation of prizes took place that evening in Gertie Brown’s Bar where as usual Mary and Michael Loughman were our excellent hosts and our thanks to them for their continued support and not only for this competition but for the club in general. When the scales came down it was that familiar duo of Tony and Declan Doolan who topped the leader board a clear 3lbs 8ozs ahead of Hugh and Johnny Tobin who claimed second place. Third place went to Sean Berry and Michael Sherlock who were a further 1lb 4ozs behind while fourth place went to James Green and Leo Joyce who were only four ounce further adrift. The fifth and final spot went to Bernard Kelly whose trout weighed in 5ozs lighter.
Our sincere thanks to the Griffin family who generously sponsor this competition and have done so since it was first fished for back in 1964. Thanks also to Michael Ganly and Eamon Cunningham who were our Captain’s of the Day.
