Game Angling & Fisheries News Update dated

dated Wednesday March 11th, 2009

WINDY WEATHER HAMPERED TROUT ANGLING OVER THE WEEKEND

The season kicked off last Sunday week March 1st on a cool but bright day on many of our waters. 12 anglers fished on Lough O'Flynn on the opening day and a few good trout were landed, best 3lbs, using wet flies. The first outing of the Athlone Anglers Association was fished on Lough Ree on Sunday March 1st  in practically ideal weather conditions and it was no wonder that twenty five boats full of eager anglers turned up on the day. The fishing was sporadic with some reporting good catches while others spent the day without even a pull. Over this weekend poor weather caused the cancellation of the Fallon Cup. On the River Feale Salmon anglers didn't fare well with no fresh fish caught over the opening few days even though there was a small fresh on the river.  The I.D.F.F.A. (Irish Disabled Fly Fishing Association) are calling on anglers with disabilities young and old, advanced or beginners to contact the Association as they are recruiting members presently.  See THEIR POSTER  Weather prospects look more promising for the upcoming holiday weekend with milder weather forecast.   TIGHT LINES!

UPPER SHANNON

LOUGH SHEELIN

Fishing has been very quiet mainly due to the cold weather, particularly over the weekend. Milder weather over the coming days should encourage a few anglers to get out and about. The Kilroy Cup is scheduled for St Patrick's weekend, more on this later.
