Game Angling & Fisheries News Update

Dated Wednesday August 5th, 2009

PETER SEASON IN FULL SWING ON MIDLAND MANAGED TROUT LAKES

Trout fishing has been very good on our midland managed fisheries and anglers have a good choice of venues to consider this week. Sheelin continues to fish very well with a good evening sedge hatch. Both wet and dry fly fishing techniques are proving productive. The Peter season is in full swing on our Mullingar lakes  Ennell and Owel with lots of action reported well into dusk, especially on Lough Owel. There has been some improvement in the weather and prospects look good for the coming week. An improvement in Croneen fishing is expected this week on the Camcor and Little Brosna rivers as fish settle which has been hampered with a succession of floods during July.

Salmon fishing improved on the River Feale with about 14 Salmon reported caught around the Listowel area, best fish 13.5lbs. All fish were fresh run with sea lice.  TIGHT LINES!

UPPER SHANNON

LOUGH SHEELIN

It was once again another good week on Sheelin with a good late evening rise of fish to sedges. Also anglers are reporting good daytime fishing. As in previous weeks, there are a lot of juvenile fish showing and anglers are asked to be especially mindful of handling and releasing  these fish with great care if caught.

A number of the regular L.S.T.P.A anglers who are  fishing the lake had plenty of action. Peter Mc Cardle and Ken Cairns from Dundalk caught and released over 30 fish in two trips to Sheelin. All fish averaged 2lbs to 3lbs. Sedges fished wet and dry accounted for the catch. Michael Kelly caught and released over 20 trout on dry sedges over the week, best fish was over 7lbs. John Murphy had 5 trout averaging 1.75lbs, released. Thomas Lynch had 4 trout to 2.75lbs, all released.

The L.S.T.P.A. are hosting a youth training day targeting young anglers from 7 to 17 years old. The event will take place on Saturday August 8th, time 11am to 5pm at Lough Sheelin Kilnahard and ShRFB offices. The programme includes, Fly casting, fly tying.

The Mc Donnell Cup trout competition which is an open competition will be fished on Sunday August 9th. Fee €20.00, time: 11am to 6pm. Contact L.S.T.P.A.
