GOOD SALMON
FISHING SINCE THE WEEKEND ON THE RIVERS MULCAIR AND FEALE
Fly life is patchy on Lough Sheelin as we write and poor weather has hampered the fishing at
times during the week. There were a few good trout reported caught
when conditions were favourable though. Anglers report a very successful
week on Lough Acalla. Despite the inclement summer weather there was
lots of anglers out on the lake with good fishing reported at all
times of the day. The Peter season is just about finished on the
Mullingar lakes and
anglers are starting to revert to the usual wet fly fishing on Owel. Peter fishing
has wound down on Ennell also. The
Keneavy Memorial Cup took place last Sunday on Lough Ree in very
blustery conditions. The Athlone Anglers Association report.
Water levels are up and down again on the Camcor River in Birr
following disturbed weather of the past few days, particularly since
the weekend. Fish are dour and sick from all the water of late and
are not taking very well. Salmon fishing has stepped up a gear with
good catches reported on the River Feale and River Mulcair,
particularly since the weekend. Prospects look good. TIGHT LINES!

THE KENEAVY MEMORIAL CUP ....
The Keneavy Memorial Cup took place last Sunday in very blustery
conditions but with twenty five boats taking to the water hopes were
high for a good catch. The weatherman has promised rain all day and
some heavy downpours and on this occasion he got it right with some
of the heaviest downpours in living memory which meant that the
bailing buckets were put to good use all day and it is in such
conditions that accidents happen but thankfully, on this occasion,
it was nothing of a serious nature.
Davey Gaffeys stew met with a small accident when it
toppled over just as it had heated up on the fire
but quick acting Davey managed to save most of it
even if it had a few extra bits now added to it. It
seems it was a day for accidents with the stew as
James Kearney and Michael Sherriff, the umbrella
men, pulled into Hare Island to have theirs and they
realised they had forgotten to bring the gas, now
you would have thought that as any two highly
trained soldiers they would fall back on their
survival training and light a fire but our heroes
were unable to get one going so they jumped back
into the boat headed back to the start where they
retrieved the gas and sat in the car eating the
stew!
The weigh in and presentation of prizes took place
that evening in Potters Bar where Michael and his
team, as usual, exceled in the hospitality stakes.
With ten fish brought to the scales it didn’t take
long to work out the winning order and it was Gerry
Wykes who collected the fabulous Keneavy Memorial
Cup for his 2lb 7oz 8drm trout. Second place went to
father and son Tommy and Anthony Moran for their 1lb
15oz 13drm trout which was less than a half an ounce
heavier than the trout of Davey and JD Gaffey which
weighed in at 1lb 15ozs 6drms for third place. Eoin
O’Neill took fourth place for his 1lb 10oz 11drm
trout and when your luck is in your luck is in as
Eoin also won the raffle. The fifth and final spot
went to Frank Doherty and Jimmy Courtney for their
trout of 1lb 10ozs 3drms, this fish was weighed on
the lake and released back unharmed.
Our sincere thanks to James and Pat Greene and their
family for their generous sponsorship of this
competition and to James Greene Jnr who acted as
Captain of the Day and facilitated the catch and
release on the lake.
THE CONWAY CONROY CUP ....
The competition for the Conway-Conroy Cup will take
place next Sunday, August 30th, and will start at
10.30am from Gallagher’s and will finish with lines
up at 6.00pm. The weigh in and presentation of
prizes will take place in the Coosan Tavern with
scales down at 8.30pm sharp, catch and release will
also be facilitated.
