SOME GOOD TROUT FISHING AGAIN ON OWEL IN PLEASANT SPRING WEATHER

Weather was fine and very pleasant up to the weekend. Some Duckfly were observed on Sheelin from time to time over the week when conditions favouored and some good trout were reported caught to 7lbs. It was quite a good week on Lough Owel with 64 anglers returning 138 fish to weekending April 5th - heaviest fish recorded 2.25 lbs. The Fallon Memorial Cup was held last Sunday on Lough Ree and as usual attracted a great entry with twenty seven boats full of anglers all intent on winning the beautiful Fallon Memorial Cup. After a quiet period, trout fishing improved on Lough Derg last weekend (Sunday April 5th) with some nice catches reported in the competitions hosted by  Garrykennedy Fishing Club and Ballina-Killaloe Angling Club. Weather has become unsettled and is forecast to be much wetter over the coming days as we head into the Easter holiday weekend. Salmon fishing is quiet due to low water levels.  TIGHT LINES!

SEAN AND CONOR FLY THEIR WAY TO SUCCESS ...

The Fallon Memorial Cup was held last Sunday and as usual attracted a great entry with twenty seven boats full of anglers all intent on winning the beautiful Fallon Memorial Cup. The day itself was cold with southerly winds and with the water temperature still cold it was the fly men who were to come out on top. The weigh and presentation was held that evening in Samz Tavern where Derek Moran and his team were excellent hosts and when the scales came down it was none other than Sean Kelly and Conor Hannon who topped the leader board with a great fly caught trout. In second place and 2lb 1oz lighter were John and Manus Conway while third place went to Owen Henry and Bernard Kelly for their 9oz lighter trout. Johnny Molloy and Alex Molloy Jnr claimed fourth place for their trout which was only three ounces lighter and the fifth and final spot went to Sean Berry and Patrick Sherlock, and similar to last week when your luck is in your luck is in as Sean and Patrick also won the boat raffle.

Sincere thanks to Paul Fallon who was our Captain of the Day and to Paul and the Fallon family for their very generous and continued sponsorship of this competition and to Derek Moran and his team at Samz Tavern for the entertainment and hospitality on the night.

THE TIPPERARY WATER CUP ....

As next Sunday is Easter Sunday there is no competition so our next competition will be on Sunday 19th April and will be for the Tipperary Water Cup. This year this will be a trout competition and as usual will start from Gallagher’s at 10.30pm and finish with lines up at 6pm. The weigh in and presentation of prizes will take place in the Coosan Tavern which is also sponsoring this competition and our thanks to Michael Murphy for his support.

FOR YOUR DIARY ...

After a quiet period, trout fishing improved on Lough Derg last weekend (Sunday April 5) with some nice catches reported in the competitions hosted by  Garrykennedy Fishing Club and Ballina-Killaloe Angling Club.

Among Garrykennedy members, trolling is still proving the most popular method, with Peter Ahern winning last Sunday’s competition with a fish of 4lbs 13ozs. Cyril Conneally and Sean Moloney were second with the greatest weight. They had a total of nine fish with three over the 2lbs mark. They released six which were under the 14 inch limit. Mike Moloney and his grandson Jack were third with a fish of 3lbs 11ozs.

The club wishes to express its gratitude to Roy and Denise Breen of Ryan’s Pub in Garrykennedy for sponsoring the competition.

This Sunday, April 12, the club will host another trout competition sponsored by T.J O’ Brien’s Tackle shop in Ballina.

KILLALOE-BALLINA ANGLERS.
