MAYFLY SEASON SLOWLY
COMMENCES ON LOUGH DERG
Weather has been abysmal
since the weekend with very heavy rain and rising water levels. A
few good fish were caught on Sheelin when conditions were favourable
- sedges buzzer and olives are worth trying. There is a fishery
awareness day organised for the 2nd of May at the Fisheries site in Kilnahard.
The LSTPA in conjunction with the ShRFB
will be providing casting instruction and Fly tying for young
fishermen and women. Other ShRFB fisheries awareness week events are
taking place and updates are available on website
http://www.education.shrfb.ie
Do join in in these fun events.
Next Sunday, 3rd May, the Athlone Anglers Association trout competition for the Donovan Cup will
take place on Lough Ree and this is the final competition before the dapp
competitions commence. The Mayfly season has commenced on Lough Derg
which to date has been a bit patchy. Angling columnist Peter Gleeson
reports on the local club outings on Derg around Garry Kennedy and
Mountshannon/Killaloe. We expect the mayfly season to take off
fully on Derg this holiday weekend - so do get out and give it a
try!. Friends of Loch an Dochais will host the All Ireland trout competition for anglers with
special needs for the Mary Robinson Perpetual Trophy at Loch an
Dochais, Kilcormac, Co Offaly on Sunday 31st May, 2009, also a youth
competition in association with the ShRFB will be held on the
fishery on May 24th. TIGHT LINES!

"There is a fishery awareness day
organised for the 2nd of May at the Fisheries site in Kilnahard.
The LSTPA in conjunction with the Shannon Regional Fishery Board
will be providing casting instruction and Flytying for young
fishermen and women. All are welcome. Please bring your young
neighbours, nephews, and friends to this event and promote fishing
as a valuable pastime for both young and old alike.
The lake continues to fish well. The committee of the club has
asked that all anglers should practise conservation and return as
many wild fish as possible to the lake. We also recommend that any
angler should kill no more than 3 fish in any one week. This is in
the interest of conservation. All fish under 15 inches should be
returned carefully to the water.
The club have released approximately 35,000 unfed fry into the
Bellsgrove, Upper Inny River, Crover stream and the Maghera River
above the hatchery. This should have an impact on trout
recruitment to these areas in the next three to five years. There
will also be a significant investment in stream rehabilitation
again this year. I will notify members of the progress of this
work as the year goes on.
I have included a 2009 sticker for all those who have paid their
membership subscription for the year. You can use the sticker on
your boat or tackle bag. If you have not paid your subscription
you can do so by sending €30 to Mr Thomas Lynch Omard Kilnaleck Co
Cavan.
Enjoy the mayfly fishing and practice catch and release where
possible."

GARRYKENNEDY FISHING CLUB .....
It was a little cold last weekend, but otherwise conditions were
ideal. There was a dark sky and a good wind from the south west,
but the fish were still slow to come to the early hatches of
mayfly which were very plentiful in Luska and Dromineer.
After a hard day’s fishing by numerous anglers in Garrykennedy,
a total of 13 trout were weighed-in and the winner of last
Sunday’s club competition for the Kevin Reynolds Plate was Tommy
Moloney with a fish of 1lb 15 ozs caught on the dapp.
John Kennedy had fish of 1lb 11ozs and 1lb 5ozs on a pearly
dabbler. Sheila Cush had one of 1lb 10ozs caught on a wulff.
Others lucky to get a fish each over the 14 inch limit on the
day were John Ryan, Padraig O’ Brien, Donnacha O’ Brien and
Eugene Willis.
There is a feast of fishing competitions hosted by the club this
May Bank Holiday weekend. The William Donnellan Trophy will be
fished for on Saturday and the competition sponsored by Pat
Nolan of Premier Angling Supplies will be held on Sunday. Tight
lines everyone!
KILLALOE INTER-CLUB FISHING COMPETITION
The ‘Inter-club’ trout competition out of Killaloe was held
on Sunday last in rather wet, dreary conditions. However, the
rain did not dampen the spirits of the enthusiastic anglers. The
competition winner was Sean Dixon (Mountshannon) with a 2 lb
10.5oz trout. In second place was Killaloe-Ballina angler,
Michael Conroy (2 lb 1oz). Mountshannon Club member, Ger Moroney
was in third place (1 lb 15oz) and John Barry (Killaloe-Ballina)
was fourth with a 1lb 14oz fish. Many thanks to Molly’s Bar for
the delicious and welcome food served at the end of the day on
the lake.
