Game Angling & Fisheries News Update dated

dated Wednesday April 1st, 2009

Photo: Ina Hall, John Hall (centre) and Patrick Tucker wins our Catch of the Week with this 5lb trout caught on Lough Owel on Saturday last March 27th.

5lb TROUT CAUGHT ON ON LOUGH OWEL WINS CATCH OF THE WEEK

It has been a cool week overall which affected angling at times. At time of writing weather is much milder - mid to high teens during the day. Lough Owel was the hot spot with a few fish caught including the feature trout of the week, a 5lb fish. Duckfly hatches are starting and hopefully this will bring on a rise of fish over the coming week and onwards into the Easter holiday weekend. Fishing was slow on O'Flynn due to the very cool conditions but some river fishing was had locally on the Upper River Suck tribs. We keep you up to date on the Athlone Anglers Association upcoming competitions on Lough Ree and the results of the Anglers Rest Cup Trout competition  Salmon fishing has been quiet due to very low water levels on the River Feale and Mulcair. - no reports of salmon caught  TIGHT LINES!

UPPER SHANNON

LOUGH SHEELIN

Some Duckfly are starting to hatch on Sheelin over the past few days. 6 anglers returned 8 trout last week. Michael Kelly L.S.T.P.A. had 4 trout averaging 2lbs. Tim Crudders from Northern Ireland had 4 trout for approx 13lbs, best 4.75lbs on dabblers. John Murphy had 1 trout of 2lbs. Weather is much milder than of late and prospects look promising.

Meanwhile catch up on angling news from the L.S.T.P.A. http://www.loughsheelinanglers.ie/

LOUGH O'FLYNN & UPPER RIVER SUCK

It was very cool on O'Flynn last week and was consequently very quiet with few boats out. On the tribs of the Upper River Suck Anthony Baggett had some good trout fishing using small nymphs, fish up to 0.75lbs. Over a few seasons, he managed to catch 4 to 5 fish.

For updates contact  John Ryan,  Assistant Fisheries Inspector Co Roscommon at 087 2536064.

MID SHANNON AREA

LOUGH ENNELL

There has been some angling activity on Ennell. Very few trout are surfacing as yet though. There has been a small hatch of Duckfly observed. As the weather improves we expect a more prolific hatch of fly.

162 trout were recorded over the month of March, some fish were ranged in weight from 2lbs to 4lbs, including the featured fish this week of 5lbs. The past week has been cold and windy. At time of writing weather has got milder and forecast fairly dry over the next few days. Hatches of duckfly have been observed. The Ace Cup trout competition will be fished next Sunday. We will provide the results in next weeks update.  We received a report and pictures from Ina Hall of our featured trout this week, a lovely 5lb fish caught by her father John Hall on Owel. This was a special day for John who has  just recently taken up fishing again after twenty years. Fishing with John was Patrick Tucker. Well done John.

LEO, LEO AND ADRIAN SHINE THROUGH ON DULL DAY ...

Last Sunday was one of those days when those who are sensible among us stayed at home in front of a warm fire or in a nice pub while the rest of us headed out onto Lough Ree in search of big trout to win the Anglers Rest Cup, and by the end of the day were wishing that we had stayed at home or in that nice pub! The fishing on the day was very slow with Captain of the Day, Richie Fallon, not exactly rushed off his feet having to weigh only one fish as catch and release and one more fish that night in The Snug where the presentation of prizes took place.

Topping the leader board when the scales came down were Leo Behan, Leo Behan Jnr and Adrian Powell whose trout was 1lb 9ozs heavier than that of Conor Hannon and Sean Kelly who claimed second place, and when your luck is in your luck is in as Conor and Sean also won the raffle on the night. Tommy Mullin got slightly confused on the day by the new catch and release rule when his dog leapt into the water at the Yellow Islands while travelling at full speed, Tommy catch and release applies to fish only!!

Our thanks to Clayton Good, Bar Manager at The Snug, for the excellent hospitality on the night and the very generous sponsorship of this competition and to Richie Fallon who was our Captain of the Day.

THE FALLON MEMORIAL CUP ....

The competition for the Fallon Memorial Cup will take place next Sunday, 5th April, starting from Gallagher’s at 10.30am and finishing with lines up at 6.00pm. The weigh in and presentation of prizes will take place that evening in Samz Tavern with the scales down at 8.30pm sharp. The Captain of the Day will be Paul Fallon and catch and release will be facilitated.
