Game Angling & Fisheries News Update dated

Wednesday September 3rd, 2008

Photo: Michael Kelly on Friday 22nd August with two nice fish for 7lbs from Lough Sheelin.

SOME QUITE GOOD TROUT FISHING REPORTED FROM AROUND THE REGION DESPITE THE POOR WEATHER

Weather remains unsettled with recent thundery downpours keeping flood levels topped up in many places. Water levels remain high on Sheelin and fly life was patchier than of late with most anglers wet fly fishing. Fishing has been quite good on Lough O'Flynn despite the very high water levels and at times blustery cool conditions with sedges getting the best results. There's the odd fish being caught on Ennell. Owel is fishing in the evening time with Peters accounting for a few fish. Some good trout to over 4lbs were caught on Derravaragh last week by local pleasure anglers. Anglers reported good fishing on Lough Acalla over the past week but poorer fly hatches than of late. Water levels are presently very high and the highest on record ever for August but great water clarity. The Keneavy Memorial Cup took place last Sunday on Lough Ree and as is always the case for this competition, attracted a large turnout with twenty six boats taking to the water. Next week, Sunday 7th September, the competition for the Social Committee Cup will take place on the lake. More on that in our next update. Salmon fishing has slowed a bit on the River Mulcair and we issue yet another press release on the Co Kerry landslide - the Shannon Regional Fisheries Board and Kerry Anglers request that the River Smearlagh be closed for angling to assist fish stock recovery as a result of the severe damage to salmon and sea trout stocks  in the headwaters of the Glashoreag and Smearlagh Rivers in the Feale catchment. TIGHT LINES!

FALLON BROTHERS DO IT AGAIN .....

The Keneavy Memorial Cup took place last Sunday and, as is always the case for this competition, attracted a large turnout with twenty six boats taking to the water. The day itself was one of the best we have had in recent times with little or no wind and some sunshine but we wouldn’t be fishermen if we didn’t complain about it and say that it was too bright and we needed more wind, we’re never happy! But there was two men out there who proved that they can catch fish in any conditions as for the second week in a row they caught, weighed and released the winning fish.
The presentation of prizes took place that evening in Potter’s Bar where Michael Costello and Deckie Dockery looked after us superbly. Captain of The Day Eamon Cunningham had an easy evening as only three fish were brought to the scales and it was the catch and release fish caught and released during the day by Richie and Joe Fallon which topped the leader board. Second place went to Anthony and Tommy Moran whose fish weighed in just seven ounces lighter than the winning fish. Anthony and Tommy, like the rest of us, were having a poor morning’s fishing until they met up with the Fallons at lunch time and managed to borrow some baits with which they nearly won the competition, almost a case of biting the hand that feeds you! Third place went to Brendan Carter and David Cunniffe whose trout weighed in a pound lighter and in fourth place and just three ounces lighter was Joe Clarke.
Our sincere thanks to James and Pat Greene and family for their very generous sponsorship of this competition and to Michael Costello in Potter’s Bar for the excellent hospitality on the night. Thanks also to Eamon Cunningham who was the Captain of The Day.

SOCIAL COMMITTEE CUP COMPETITION ....

Next week, Sunday 7th September, the competition for the Social Committee Cup will take place. This is a trout competition and will take place on Lough Ree starting at Gallagher’s Boat shed at 10.30am and finishing ant 6pm with lines up.

RIVER MULCAIR CO LIMERICK

Salmon fishing has quietened down a lot as water levels taper back. Some local anglers had some fish on certain stretches. German Angling guests of Richard Keyes of Millbank Angling Centre had a couple of good sized grilse on fly. A Trout fishing group from Toulouse fished the Bilboa river, a tributary of the Mulcair and had a some enjoyable fishing catching lots of trout up to 26cms.

ShRFB reports for the RIVER FEALE CO KERRY

The river is too high for fishing presently. The only chance of a few fish is the lower Feale. There are good numbers of fish moving and should fish as water levels become suitable. The Shannon Regional Fisheries Board and Kerry Anglers request that the River Smearlagh be closed for angling to assist fish stock recovery as a result of the severe damage to salmon and sea trout stocks caused by the major landslide last weekend in the headwaters of the Glashoreag and Smearlagh Rivers in the Feale catchment.
