SHEELIN A PERFORMER ONCE AGAIN AS THE SEASON BOWS OUT ON A POSITIVE  NOTE

The season bowed out on a positive note on Sheelin with many quality wild trout caught to 7lbs. A large number of anglers turned out for the final outing of the season on Sheelin, the Cavan/Monaghan Garda Annual fly fishing competition fished on Saturday last the 11th October . The top six fish averaged almost 4lbs. We provide the results of the end of season Inter Lakes competition fished on the Mullingar lakes, Owel, Ennell and Derravaragh. The season has now ended and we will be back in 2009 for the commencement of a new season. We hope you had a good year and wish you safe angling in 2009. If we have any news items of regional or national interest over the winter months we will post here, so do come back from time to time to see what's new. See recent news below.  TIGHT LINES IN 2009

UPPER SHANNON

LOUGH SHEELIN

Once again very good fishing was reported on Lough Sheelin which has been a steady performer this year. Angler Damien Willis rounded off the season on a high note on Sunday the 12th of October with a fine Sheelin trout of almost 7lbs. Damien's boat partner for the day was former Leinster Champion & Artist Greg Long. They started fishing from John Murphy’s Bay in what was less than favourable conditions, bright sunshine, no wind and very little insect life. While on their first drift from Crover shore down to Merry Point they saw a few fish rising to the occasional sedge. Covering most of the lake they drifted from Gore Port across to Derrysheridan. Greg decided to change over to a team of wet flies to minic pin fry, landing this fine Trout of 6lb 14oz and is our feature photo this week.  John Murphy L.S.T. P.A. had some fine trout of 7lbs and 3.75lbs and released six other fish on a Silver Dabbler. Andrew Brown and Bob Priestly caught 17 trout the week - best 5lbs and 4.5lbs, 3lbs and the rest of the fish averaged 1.5lbs, all were released. Michael Kelly caught and released 11 trout over two trips, best 3lbs. Another 30 anglers who fished the lake caught and released over 200 fish over the last 10 days of the season.
