Wednesday May 28th, 2008

IT WAS QUALITY IF NOT QUANTITY ON LOUGH DERG AND REE AS THE MAYFLY SEASON GRADUALLY DRAWS TO A CLOSE ON A DISAPPOINTING NOTE

The Mayfly season draws to a close now with possibly a few more days to go on Lough Ree and Derg. It was quality if not quantity on Ree this mayfly season so far with some good trout caught but overall anglers were disappointed with the fishing. The Athlone Anglers Association  had a very busy weekend with two competitions taking place, the Lough Ree Inn Cup on Saturday and the Teddy Browne Memorial Cup on Sunday. Angling conditions were difficult with high winds.  The Mayfly fishing is just about coming to an end on Derg for this year which too was a patchy affair but still some good fish caught especially around Garrykennedy and other local bays. The constant east - north easterly breezes throughout most of the month were probably a factor in the patchy results. There were prolific hatches of Mayfly on Sheelin. In more suitable conditions the spent gnat were evident and a few good fish were caught. Most anglers are reporting good hatches of buzzer on Ennell and Owel has picked up of late with better prospects as winds drop heading for the holiday weekend.  TIGHT LINES!

LOUGH SHEELIN

Weather conditions proved difficult with north easterly winds. There were prolific hatches of Mayfly though. In more suitable conditions the spent gnat were evident and a few fish were caught. The best reported fish of the week of 8lbs was caught by Brendan Corr from Co Antrim.  K.M. Whorry from Lincs in England had a nice trout of 5lbs on the spent gnat, fish was released. John Little from Cavan had 2 fish 7lbs and 6.5lbs. Francie Harten, Cavan had 2 fish, 2.75 and 3.5lbs Other smaller fish were reported caught. Overall Sheelin was not heavily fished this week. If weather improves by the weekend some spent and Mourrough fishing should be in prospect.

Michael Clarke had 3 fish of 5.5lbs, 4lbs and 3lbs on an alder. John Carney from Kildare had 1 fish of 3lbs on a buzzer.

20 anglers fished the competition on Sunday. One fish was returned over the 14 inch limit set by the club. Participants reported releasing a number of smaller trout to the lake.

LOUGH OWEL

John O'Malley had 2 fish of 1.75lbs caught on a Peter Ross. Prospects look good for the weekend as winds are expected to swing around to a southerly direction.  Prospects are promising for the up-coming holiday weekend.

LOUGH REE

The Mayfly fishing is nearing an end for another year. It was certainly a mixed season which could only be described as patchy and disappointing at times. Anglers reported fish rising once or twice and then going down, making them difficult to catch. The north easterly winds which prevailed for much of the month probably didn't help either. On the positive side there were some beautiful fish caught such as the 6.6lb trout featured in this weeks catch of the week, caught by John Gallagher from Balbriggan, Co. Dublin. Weather is forecast to get humid and less breezy by the weekend - anglers may get the last of the gnat fishing  of  the mayfly season.

THE MAYFLY SEASON DRAWS TO A CLOSE .....

As the Mayfly season draws to a close we had a very busy weekend with two competitions taking place, the Lough Ree Inn Cup on Saturday and the Teddy Browne Memorial Cup on Sunday. Both competitions were well supported in terms of the number of anglers taking part but the return to the scale on both occasions was very poor.

THE LOUGH REE INN CUP ....

This was the first time in a number of years that we have had a competition on a Saturday and it was decided to do so because the hatches of Mayfly is starting to slow down and it was feared that it would be completely finished by next Sunday which was the original date for this competition. The same north-easterly wind that has been blowing for the last four weeks was still there and made the lake choppy but you don’t have to go far up the lake to catch a winning fish as was proved by Dominic Conway.

The weigh in and presentation of prizes was held that evening in the Lough Ree Inn where Ciaran Kiveney was our genial host. Captain of the Day, Angela Sloane, was not kept busy as only two fish were brought to the scale however it took some time to decide the winner as there was only one twelfth of an ounce between them. After both fish had been weighed several times and the scales well scrutinised it was decided that Dominic Conway’s was slightly the heavier leaving Noel Monaghan to take second place for his trout. The discussion continued late into the evening in the pub as to what tactics to use the following day and why the return of fish during the season was so poor.

Our sincere thanks to Ciaran Kiveney of the Lough Ree Inn for his generous sponsorship of this competition and hospitality on the night and to Angela Sloane who was our Captain of  the Day.

THE TEDDY BROWNE MEMORIAL CUP ....

The was our second competition of the weekend and was fished in very windy conditions with gusts up to force 6 which meant that most anglers stayed on the southern end of the lake where the previous day’s winner had been caught. Unfortunately the same as the day before the anglers were out in good numbers but the return of fish was again very poor with only three fish brought to the weigh in which took place in Gertie’s Bar where we were looked after very well by Michael Loughman. Conor Hannon was the Captain of The Day and like Angela the day before it did no take long to weigh the catch and when the scales came down it was Conor himself who topped the leader board. In another close finish his fishing partner, Sean Kelly, claimed second spot for his trout which was only three ounce lighter and the third and final place awarded on the night place went to Paddy Killion for his fine trout.

Our sincere thanks to Michael Loughman of Gertie’s Bar for his generous sponsorship of this competition and hospitality on the night and to Conor Hannon who was our Captain of the Day.

There is no competition next weekend as it is the bank holiday weekend but the competitions for the heaviest fish on the dapp continue and we will let everybody know the finish date for this later in the week by text message.

PALLAS LAKE CO OFFALY

LOUGH ACALLA CO GALWAY

There was an average of about 12 anglers fishing Lough Acalla each day over the week. No big fish were caught. Anglers reported good fly hatches and corresponding rise of fish. Best flies fished wet were Peter Ross, Olives (green and golden) and Black Pennell. Prospects are good for the weekend with winds expected to reduce  and recent overcast conditions are more favourable.

LITTLE BROSNA RIVER

No fishing reports received.

CAMCOR RIVER BIRR

The ShRFB issued a Press Release on February 25th, 2008. We request that anglers familiarise with new conservation measures for the fishery.

"This year the Shannon Regional Fisheries Board has introduced a new trout conservation measure on its fishery, River Camcor, in association with the Camcor and Little Brosna Angling Club. This follows concerns that trout stocks were being fished by unsustainable means. This new regulation will ensure that trout stocks will be maintained and that anglers will be able to enjoy angling on the Camcor into the future.

The conservation measure of Fly Fishing Only will be enforced by Fisheries Staff who will patrol the river during the open season which commences on the 1st March 2008 until the 30th September.

The Camcor and Little Brosna is an important salmon and trout fishery and every effort will put in place to sustain and develop its potential. Therefore, we urge all anglers to abide by this conservation measure and practice catch and release when possible.

If anglers have any queries please contact Shannon Regional Fisheries Board.

LOWER SHANNON AREA

RIVER MULCAIR CO LIMERICK

Weather too bright and warm for Salmon fishing. Water levels low.

J O'Brien, TJ's ANGLING CENTRE KILLALOE Tel: 061 376009 Mob 087 8108225 reports for Lough Derg

Trout fishing was overall disappointing on Derg. Some local bays fished well enough at times with some big fish caught, but generally results were patchy.  Some mayfly are still hatching so there should be a few more days left before the mayfly fishing winds up. Ger Keogh had a double figure trout of 10lbs over the past couple of days. Next weeks report will conclude reports on the mayfly season on Derg. Hopefully the slacker winds and warmer conditions should see a few more fish caught. TIGHT LINES!
