MAYFLY STILL ON THE
TROUT MENU ON SHEELIN WHILE OTHER LAKE FISHERIES GO INTO A
LULL PERIOD
Weather has been very
changeable with a lot of rain and blustery conditions over the week,
especially over the weekend. Most of our midland lakes have switched
off as in normal this time of year as fish go on Perch fry. This
coupled with the unseasonable stormy weather is hampering trout
angling on many of our fisheries. Mayfly are still hatching on
Sheelin which is providing all the sport for the past few weeks.
On O'Flynn there has been a good hatch of sedges which is bringing
on a late evening rise of fish with anglers reporting some success,
also some fish were caught on Perch fry imitations.
There was a long awaited
small fresh on the River Feale on Thursday, followed by a larger
flood on Sunday. There was good angling water on Monday but Salmon
fishing was slow despite a good turn out of anglers. Sea Trout are
now on the move into the River Feale and should provide some good
summer fishing. TIGHT
LINES!
UPPER SHANNON

LOUGH SHEELIN
The Mayfly continue to hatch on
Sheelin to W/E Sunday June 22nd with plenty of spent. This has
provided lots of sport in the more suitable angling
conditions over the week. This is expected to go on for a few more
days at least. There are good hatches of olives, buzzer and sedges
for those who wish to experiment. A good number of anglers
reported catching and releasing a few hundred fish altogether
ranging in weight from 0.5lbs to 3lbs generally. The best reported
catches for the week were as follows
-
Paddy Lyons LS.T.P.A. had 11 fish for
the week, best 3.75lbs, all were caught on spent gnat and all were
released.
-
Eugene Mc Guinness, Co Louth had 9
fish for the week, best 5.5lbs.
-
Michael Kelly, L.S.T.P.A. Balbriggan
had 11 over the week, best 4lbs, most fish were caught on the
green fly, all released.
-
Brendan Corr L.S.T.P.A. Belfast had 7
fish, all on spent, best 2.5lbs, all released.
Prospects look good if the present
stormy winds abate.

LOUGH O'FLYNN & UPPER RIVER SUCK
Photo: Anthony Baggott, Castlerea in
picture with a trout 2 ¼ lbs caught on O'Flynn on
dry sedge in calm conditions. Two other fish were
released. Trout began to move late to a good hatch
of sedges at 8.30 a couple of evenings ago. It was
quiet up to then.
While trout are still on Perch fry some good late evening sedge
fishing was had on O'Flynn last week with good hatches of fly evident.
Frank Reynolds and John Hammond had 3 fish on Monday evening, best
1.75lbs. Regulars Bernard Mannion and Matt Foley had 5 fish on
Saturday, best 2lbs, caught on a muddler. A party of French Pike
anglers who try some trout fishing did a few early morning sessions on
the local tributaries of the River Suck and reported very lively
action. While most fish were small in size they did have some fish up
to 0.5kg. All fish were released. A journalist who accompanied this
group Laurent Renard did an 8 page article on the trout and pike
fishing in the Suck Valley area in a leading French magasine 'Yoyages
de Peche'. This is the third major article featuring the Suck Valley
in major international angling publications recently.
