EXCELLENT SALMON
FISHING REPORTED FROM THE MULCAIR RIVER CO LIMERICK IN RECENT DAYS
Both Trout and Salmon
fishing has been lively in places this week but unfortunately we also had bad
news from the River Feale catchment with fish killed
by a peat landslide following the recent heavy rains in the area - see
press releases
for further details. Very high water levels spoiled the dry fly fishing on Sheelin with poor fly hatches at
time of writing. Water levels are very high on
Lough O'Flynn and described as 'winter high'
which has affected the fishing over the week. There was good
mid week fishing on Owel with dabblers working well and anglers were
active during the evening Peter fishing. There was also good
trout angling reported from the western shores of Lough Ree with
several trout up to 3.5lbs recorded on Daddy Long legs. Athlone
Anglers Association report on the recently fished trout competition
on Ree for the Conroy/Conway Cup. On Lough Acalla anglers reported
excellent fishing with water levels at their
highest for August in decades. Salmon fishing has been excellent
over the past few days on the Mulcair as water levels recover and
get back to normal following a succession of recent floods. There
were also some Salmon caught on the lower Feale downstream of
Listowel. Prospects
look very promising for both Salmon and Trout anglers over the
coming few days with less rainfall forecast. Please see below free
Angling instruction offered on September 28th on the Shannon at
Portumna. Finally the Board will have a presence over the weekend at
the Game and Country Fair in Birr TIGHT LINES!
UPPER
SHANNON

LOUGH SHEELIN
High water levels has spoiled the dry fly
fishing on Sheelin with poor fly hatches at time of writing. Anglers
are still reporting some fish, most released, ranging in weight from
0.5lbs to 3lbs on wet flies. Michael Kelly caught and released over 30
trout over 3 days fishing, best fish 3lbs plus. Mr Andrew Browne
L.S.T.P.A. caught and released over 20 fish in the last couple of
weeks, best over 3lbs. Finbarr Harten USA caught over 30 fish to
3.75lbs, most were released. Thomas Harten fishing with his friend
Gene Brady L.S.T.P.A. caught and released over 20 fish ranging from
0.5lbs to 2.75lbs.

LOUGH O'FLYNN & UPPER RIVER SUCK
Water levels are very high on
Lough O'Flynn and described as winter high
which has affected the fishing over the week.
However, most anglers that fished had a few fish
after in short sessions. The Catch of the Week
was by Anthony Baggott, a regular angler who had a
nice fish of 2.75lbs caught on a red tailed Peter.
Ronan, a nephew of Anthony had 4 fish on the
same occasion. 16 anglers took part in a recent
competition hosted by Lake O'Flynn Anglers. 27
fish were caught. The winner was M. Mc Dermott
with a fish of 2lbs 7ozs, Second was John Jones
with a fish of 1lb 7ozs, third Joe Fitzharris with
a fish of 1lb 2.4ozs and finally forth Ray Burns
with a fish of 1lb 2ozs. Prospects look good if
weather improves.

LOUGH OWEL
There was good mid week
fishing with seven anglers returning twelve fish
averaging 1.5lbs the heaviest being 3 lbs caught by
Pat Marsh on Dabbler. However weekend weather
conditions were very wet and stormy and as a result
there were very few anglers out fishing. Dabblers
accounted for plenty of fish and the Peter season is
in full swing with plenty of fishing during late evening.
Catch Returns:
Pat Marsh from Athlone had three fish - one weighing
3lbs and 2 weighing 1.5lbs on a dabbler on Monday
18th August and had other fish later in the week. On
Tuesday 19th August Christy Dunne had 2 fish
weighing 2 lbs and 1.25lbs. On Wednesday 20th August
Tom Gorman from Mullingar had two fish weighing 1.25
lbs on a dabbler. On Thursday 21st August Alan
Murray the Downs had one fish weighing 1.5 lbs on a
dabbler. On Sunday 24th August Matt Whelan had one
fish weighing 1.50 lbs fly and T P Farrell had two
fish weighing 1.25 lbs fly.

THE CONWAY/CONROY CUP ....
The competition
for the Conway/Conroy Cup took place last Sunday in
practically ideal conditions with a good strong
breeze blowing from the southwest and twenty
three boats turned up to take advantage of it.
While the fish caught on the day were not plentiful
they were of excellent quality and in particular the
trout caught, weighed and released by Paul, Joe and
Richie Fallon.
The weigh in and
presentation of prizes took place that evening in
the Coosan Tavern where Michael Murphy was as usual
an excellent host and where, as the time ticked
slowly to eight thirty, there was a flurry of
activity around the scales. When the presentation
took place it was Paul Fallon, Joe Fallon and Richie
Fallon who took home the fantastic Conway/Conroy Cup
for their excellent trout which was released back
into the lake unharmed. In second place with a trout
only six ounces lighter were Helen and Dominic
Conway while Gerry Wykes claimed third spot for his
trout which was nine ounces further behind. Fourth
prize went to Martin “Lucky” McCaffrey accompanied
by “master nets man” Noel Monaghan, though he did
need two attempts with the net to land this one, for
their trout which was five ounces lighter and the
fifth and final spot went to Liam and Richard
O’Sullivan for their trout which was almost a pound
lighter.
Our thanks go to
the Conway and Conroy families for their very
generous sponsorship of this competition and to
Michael Murphy and his staff for their excellent
hospitality. Thanks also to Angela Sloane who was
the Captain of The Day.
Next week when
the competition for the Keneavy Memorial Cup will
take place and as usual the start will be at
Gallagher’s at 10.30pm with lines up at 6pm. The
weigh in and presentation of prizes will take place
that evening in the Potter’s with scales down at
8.30pm sharp

LOUGH DERG
PETER GLEESON, SEC
AND PRO OF GARRYKENNEDY FISHING CLUB REPORTS
SPATE OF BOAT ENGINES THEFTS CONTINUES .....
The protracted spate of boat engine thefts on the
shores of Lough Derg is continuing with the
disappearance of a further seven engines on angling
boats in Garrykennedy, writes Peter Gleeson of the
Nenagh Guardian newspaper on August 12.
Local boat owners are left reeling and substantially
out of pocket following the thefts which took place
on Wednesday night last week (Aug 6 2008). Gardai in
Nenagh are following a direct line of inquiry after
arresting up to three individuals following the
recovery of a number of engines in a house search in
Nenagh on August 12, though nobody has yet been
charged at the time of writing (Today, August 19).
The culprits cut the chain on a rowing boat moored
in the public harbour and used it to gain entry to
the boathouse owned by the Garrykennedy Boat Club.
The thieves specifically targeted boats with modern
four-stroke outboard engines, making off with a haul
estimated to be in excess of a total of €20,000.
They used bolt cutters to break the locks on the
engines and loaded them into a separate boat in the
shed and rowed back out with their valuable haul. It
is believed the stolen engines were then loaded into
a van or lorry, which gardai have so far failed to
locate.
Gardai suspect that the engines are being smuggled
abroad for sale. Boat engine thefts have become an
extremely lucrative racket for criminals in recent
times. Similar thefts have been reported from
boating clubs all over the country.
Boating clubs in places like Killaloe and
Garrykennedy are now being forced to invest in
costly security measures to protect the property of
their members.
Gardai suspect that the criminals involved in such
incidents work in highly organized gangs. They seem
to have little trouble overcoming security measures
taken by individual boat owners to secure their
property.
The situation became so bad earlier this year that
the Shannon Regional Fisheries Board said there were
thefts taking place on almost a daily basis.
In a statement issued last May, the board advised
all anglers to remove their engines from their boats
when not in use.
Virtually all areas of the Lough Derg shoreline have
been hit, with the total haul now believed to be in
excess of the €100,000 mark.
Last May three boats were stolen from the Canal Bank
in Killaloe. The craft were later discovered further
up the lake at Two-Mile-Gate. The thieves had sawn
away the back of each vessel to steal their engines,
all believed to be 25 horsepower models.
Two engines were also taken from the Ogonnelloe area
during the same period. In at least one of these
incidents a consaw, or chainsaw, was used to saw
away the back of the boat in order to steal the
engine.
In August of last year six engines were stolen from
the Saint Flannan’s Fishing Club boathouse in
Killaloe. The haul was estimated at €35,000.
In April of this year five engines were stolen from
the Nenagh Boat Club in Dromineer and four from the
shoreline in Ballina. One was stolen in Coolbawn an
at least another two in the Ogonnelloe area.
The fishery board has described the theft of boat
engines as “a new any worrying phenomenon in the
area”.
RIVER MULCAIR CO
LIMERICK
Salmon fishing has been excellent over the
past few days on the Mulcair as water levels
recover and back to normal. Angling
conditions are excellent at time of writing
and prospects are very good with lots of fish
distributed along all sections of the river.

Tuesday August 26th, best 8lbs, all on flying
His angling guest Mr Williams from the UK had
two grilse. Trout angling has been good too.

ShRFB reports for the
RIVER FEALE CO KERRY
Water levels are dropping back well after a
deluge over recent weeks. Angling conditions
are ideal for fly anglers and a number of
fish were reported caught mainly on fly
downstream of Listowel.
