TROUT FISHING HAMPERED BY THE HARSH WEATHER OF PAST WEEKS

The weather has been very inclement once again with very windy harsh conditions much of the time.  On Lough Ree everybody was hopeful that weather  would have improved and that the competition for the Quinnsworth Cup would be intense and eventful. However, this was not to be, read the full report by Athlone Anglers Association. On the midland lakes - well still not a lot of action yet but that should change over the coming week. Ennell has been quiet. Garrykennedy Club member Brian Maloney won the big wet fly competition sponsored by Scariff Mountshannon and Whitegate Angling Club on Sunday last (April 20th) Peter Gleeson reports. The first sightings of mayfly were on Lough Derg at Luska in recent days, but it's probably a week away yet before the fly hatches in any abundance, we'll keep you posted. One of the highlights of the coming week is our  FAW (Fisheries Awareness week) which commences this weekend, please see our events calendar, there will be some great prizes up for grabs and all are welcome.  Weather is improving with warmer temperatures at time of writing and this should make a huge difference to catch returns over the coming week.  TIGHT LINES!

UPPER SHANNON

LOUGH SHEELIN

There hasn't been much angling activity reported over the week due to the harsh weather. Conditions have improved as we write. Michael Kelly had two fish of 1.5lbs each. Some hatches of olives and duckfly were observed.

JOHNNY'S LONE FISH WINS THE QUINNSWORTH CUP

After the poor fishing the previous week everybody was hopeful that things would have changed and that the competition for the Quinnsworth Cup would be intense and eventful however, this was not to be. There was a good turnout on the morning with twenty four boats full of eager anglers at Gallagher’s Boat Shed and while they waited for the off all were discussing the reasons for the poor fishing the previous week and the hope that things were about to change. Some anglers were so eager that as they approached the river bank they forgot to stop and lift the engine resulting in a rather dramatic arrival on the shoreline.
With the wind blowing from the Northeast the day was bitterly cold and there was no let up all day as the sun failed to break through at all so when lunchtime arrived anglers did not need to be asked twice and all headed to the nearest shoreline where hot stews and big fires were the order of the day. It soon became clear at that point that all the hopes for the day expressed that morning were not going to be realised and that the afternoon was going to be long, cold and fruitless.
The weigh in and presentation of prizes was held that evening in the Olive Bar where Keane Moran and Eamon Cummins were the genial hosts. With all eyes on the windows to see if any anglers were turning up with fish it was starting to look like we might not have any winner at all until Johnny Tobin turned up with bag in hand and as the clock ticked inexorably toward eight thirty it was obvious that this was going to be the only fish caught on the day. With no other fish to weigh Johnny was declared the winner and he was soon on the phone to his brother, Hugh, who would normally have fished with him but had decided against going out to tell him the good news, that he had just missed out on a share of the first place prize money!
Our sincere thanks to Keane Moran and Eamon Cummins of the Olive Bar for their sponsorship of this competition and for their generous hospitality on the night at the presentation of prizes and to Angela Sloane who was the Captain of The Day.

CAMCOR RIVER BIRR

The ShRFB issued a Press Release on February 25th, 2008. We request that anglers familiarise with new conservation measures for the fishery.

"This year the Shannon Regional Fisheries Board has introduced a new trout conservation measure on its fishery, River Camcor, in association with the Camcor and Little Brosna Angling Club. This follows concerns that trout stocks were being fished by unsustainable means. This new regulation will ensure that trout stocks will be maintained and that anglers will be able to enjoy angling on the Camcor into the future.

The conservation measure of Fly Fishing Only will be enforced by Fisheries Staff who will patrol the river during the open season which commences on the 1st March 2008 until the 30th September.

The Camcor and Little Brosna is an important salmon and trout fishery and every effort will put in place to sustain and develop its potential. Therefore, we urge all anglers to abide by this conservation measure and practice catch and release when possible.

If anglers have any queries please contact Shannon Regional Fisheries Board.

RIVER MULCAIR CO LIMERICK

Report from Peter Gleeson, PRO Garrykennedy Fishing Club, middle Lough Derg 087-6564662 and Secretary of Lough Derg Anglers Association.
GARRYKENNEDY FISHING CLUB..

Garrykennedy Club member Brian Maloney won the big wet fly competition sponsored by Scariff Mountshannon and Whitegate Angling Club on Sunday last (April 20th).  Brian’s fish of 2lbs 1oz also won him the first prize in a separate competition organised by Garrykennedy Fishing Club. This event was sponsored by Talbot Sherry Fitzgerald Auctioneers in Nenagh.

Overall, the cold conditions was against good fishing. Only ten fish on or over the allowable 14 inch limit were weighed in the Scariff competition and nine in the Garrykennedy competition. The best of the fishing was in Luska and on the Urra shore where there were sightings of a few mayfly. The “killer” fly on the day was the claret dabbler.

Garrykennedy club members Paudie O’ Brien and John Ryan had a great day, landing a total of ten fish, keeping four.
