STORY OF SALMON CAUGHT IN
GRAND CANAL DAINGEAN CO OFFALY IN MARCH
Weather was very changeable and very wet and windy at times,
especially over south Leinster over the weekend. At time of writing
weather is more settled with much milder temperatures. Next Sunday
Lough Owel anglers host their first trout competition of the season.
On the day the Ace Cup is the top prize.
On Wednesday night March 26th Lough Ennell Trout
Preservation Association hosted their A.G.M. in
the Greville Arms Hotel Mullingar, Michael
Flanagan reports on this. Athlone Anglers Association reports on the
The Fallon Memorial Cup which was held last Sunday, 30th March on
Lough Ree, and as usual attracted a great turnout with 24 boats
taking part. On the Salmon angling front, well not a lot going on.
Salmon fishing in the Mulcair River has been very
slow since the start of the season despite
some good angling water. A few fish were reported on Castleconnell
Salmon Fishery and the River Feale, overall though Salmon the spring
salmon fishing season to date has been a disappointment. One of the
big stories this week is that of the lost Salmon which was
caught on the Grand Canal to the amazement of the local Coarse
Angling Club. The 8lb 12oz Salmon shed her eggs when caught and
looked thin. The Shannon Region Regional Fisheries Board outlines
the events of the lost Salmon - read the
FULL STORY. TIGHT
LINES!

small trout on the upper part of the Cloonard River.

ENNELL A.G.M.
On Wednesday night March 26th Lough Ennell Trout
Preservation Association hosted their A.G.M. in
the Greville Arms Hotel. Not a whole lot has
changed on the top table. The Doc once again was
re-elected as Chairman which was no surprise as
Dr. T.W. Waldron has held this position for quite
a number of years now. We
wish him all the best in the 2008 season. Only one
change was made to the officers and Harry Lynch
stood down as Hon- Secretary. Harry held the
position for the past few years and was thanked by
the members for his work and commitment to
L.E.T.P.A. Taking over is Morris Gorman. Morris
has come up the ranks on Ennell and will certainly
do a fine job as secretary. There was alot of
talking points from the Ennell meeting and once
again the problem with water quality on Ennell
took up a lot of the meeting. The on going saga
with the new treatment plant was aired. On the
angling scene John Tyrrell competition captain
addressed the meeting. John and his younger
brother Alan look after the club competitions and
as in previous season did a fine job in 2007. As
in previous years the fishing was very tough and
not too many trout were recorded on competition
days. John thanked all who supported the
events and especially their sponsors.
Unfortunately Dermot Broughan was unable to attend
the meeting and Pat McDonnell of the ShRFB stood
in for Dermot. Pat covered all the work taking
place on Ennell and the problems facing the lake
in 2008. Pat has moved away from Ennell in recent
times and has taken up a post in Birr Co. Offaly.
He stressed that at the next Ennell committee
meeting Dermot will be on hand to give a more
detailed account on the plans for Ennell. The
meeting ended with Chairman Dr. Waldron calling a
minutes silence for all members and their family
members who passed away in the past twelve months.
With this the meeting ended.

and James Fallon present the Fallon Memorial Cup
to George Price after the Athlone Anglers
Association competition
The Fallon Memorial Cup was held last Sunday, 30th March, and as
usual attracted a great turnout with 24 boats taking part. The day
itself started off with light winds and clear skies but with the
forecasters predicting thunderstorms everybody was keeping an eye on
the heavens but thankfully they never materialised. The fishing
itself was on the most part poor and it took a once in a lifetime
catch of a fantastic trout late in the day to claim the coveted
trophy.
The weigh in and presentation of prizes took place that evening in
Samz Tavern on Connaught Street where our host, Derek Moran,
hospitality was greatly appreciated. It came as no surprise when the
scales came down that Jamal Salib, Conor price and George Price were
declared the winners with their great catch. They also opted to use
the catch and release system now in place for trout competitions and
he swam away to hopefully give someone else the joy of catching him
another day. Second place went to Anthony Moran and Niall Fallon for
their trout which on any other day would probably have been a
winner. The competition for the final three places was extremely
tight with only two ounces separating them and in third place it was
Jimmy O’Rourke with son in law Jimmy Flanagan who were one ounce
ahead of Michael Sheriff and James Kearney who in fourth place were
one ounce ahead of Gerry and Derek Wykes who claimed the fifth and
final spot.
Our thanks to the Fallon family for their continued and generous
support for this competition and in particular to Paul Fallon who
was our Captain of The day. Thanks also to Derek Moran and the staff
in Samz tavern for their excellent service and hospitality.
ANGLERS REST CUP
The competition for the Anglers Rest Cup will take place next week,
Sunday 6th April, with the start at Gallagher’s Boat shed at 10.30am
and will finish with lines up at 5.30pm. The weigh in and
presentation of prizes will take place in Fiddler’s Bar with scales
down at 8.30pm. It is also being sponsored by Tracy Thompson of
Fiddler’s Bar whose continued support if greatly appreciated.

LITTLE BROSNA RIVER
No angling reported this week.
CAMCOR RIVER BIRR
The ShRFB issued a Press Release on February 25th, 2008. We request
that anglers familiarise with new conservation measures for the
fishery.
"This year the Shannon Regional Fisheries Board has introduced a new
trout conservation measure on its fishery, River Camcor, in
association with the Camcor and Little Brosna Angling Club. This
follows concerns that trout stocks were being fished by unsustainable
means.
This new regulation will ensure that trout stocks will be maintained
and that anglers will be able to enjoy angling on the Camcor into
the future.
The conservation measure of Fly Fishing Only will be enforced by
Fisheries Staff who will patrol the river during the open season
which commences on the 1st March 2008 until the 30th September.
The Camcor and Little Brosna is an important salmon and trout
fishery and every effort will put in place to sustain and develop
its potential. Therefore, we urge all anglers to abide by this
conservation measure and practice catch and release when possible.
If anglers have any queries please contact Shannon Regional
Fisheries Board.
LOWER SHANNON AREA

RIVER MULCAIR CO
LIMERICK
Salmon fishing in the Mulcair has been very
slow since the start of the season. Despite
ideal water levels there has
been little or no sign of any spring fish
present in the river as yet.
LONG SHORE & PLASSEY - RIVER SHANNON
With the long shore open to catch and release
of wild Salmon this year, a lot of anglers
have been fishing the bank. Plenty of kelts
have been caught and released with some
reports of the odd fresh spring fish being
caught on the Flying C.
PLASSEY - RIVER SHANNON
The section of water from Black Bridge to
Plassey bridge has been fished hard in the
last week with little or no results. Some of
the local anglers have sighted fresh fish in
the system but they have failed to catch any.
CASTLECONNELL
Reports from some of the local anglers have been positive.
Two confirmed reports were received of spring fish caught in
the past three weeks. The first coming from a
guest who was fishing beat six and the other
from Mr. Tom Leese which weighed
approximately 11lbs.
ShRFB reports for the
RIVER FEALE CO KERRY
Four Salmon were confirmed caught on the
River Feale last week. Angling conditions
were good for most of the week with the
exception of Saturday when the river was too
high and coloured to fish. A good few
anglers were out on Sunday but only 2 fish
caught. Sean Gleeson had a good fish of
10lbs on March 30th. Joss Moloney from
Listowel had a fish each day on March 24th
and 25th. Brendan McKenna (J) Lyracrompane
had a fish 11lbs on a spinner.
