TROUT ANGLING QUIETER
THAN IN PREVIOUS WEEKS
From reports received trout angling has been quieter
than in previous weeks. A few decent fish were reported caught on Sheelin
on mainly dry sedges. The best fish of the week on Sheelin was over
9lbs. Lough Owel is still producing a few fish to sedges but is not
as lively as it was in August.
Lough Derravaragh anglers are in action on Sunday next
September 9th. On the day the Daly/ Gibson competition for
trout will be fished.
Lough Owel anglers hosted their last official club
competition of the 2007 trout season last Sunday
September 2nd, the Clonhugh Cup. Michael Flanagan reports on the
recent and upcoming trout competitions. Salmon fishing has
slowed down significantly with lower water, especially on the River
Feale. The Mulcair River in Co Limerick is still producing a few
fish though in the usual hot spots. TIGHT LINES!

on a recent trout match
The Rynn Shannon and District Angling
Club held their first ever fly fishing match on Lara lake. There
was a good turn out of boats on the day. Strong sunshine proved
hard fishing for the less experienced like myself on the fly. The
Gallagher brothers from Ballinmore did very well.
Tony Gallagher with the heaviest bag.
Shane Gallagher heaviest fish. Paul Byrne from Carrick on Shannon
won the shore competition. The results were
1st: Heaviest bag went to Tony Gallagher Ballinmore
2nd: John Bradshaw mohill
3rd: Peter Moran Drumsna
The heaviest fish went to Shane Gallagher, Ballinmore, heaviest
bag and heaviest fish was won by Paul Byrne Carrick on Shannon.
LOUGH SHEELIN
Angling was fairly quiet on Sheelin
last week but did pick up a little over recent days. Sedge
hatches were a little patchy. The present warmer conditions should
bring on a better hatch of fly. Nonetheless a few good fish
were reported caught by those who ventured out on the lake.
Tom Curran L.S.T.P.A. had the best trout of the week at 9lbs 1oz.
D. Brennan from Kilkenny had 15 fish over a number of days, best
3.5lbs on dry sedge. Thomas Lynch had 8 fish over the week, best
2.75lbs. Walter and Susan Byrne from Edenderry had 6 fish between
them on dry fly. Peter O'Reilly had 5 fish on dry fly, all
released. Michael Kelly and friend had 5 fish on dry sedge. Neddie
Clinton had 6 trout averaging 1.5lbs on dry sedge. Adrian Mc Grane
L.S.T.P.A. from Kells had 7 trout averaging 1.75lbs last week.
Sheelin is worth fishing with small dry sedges.

CLONHUGH CUP....
Lough Owel anglers hosted their last official club
competition of the 2007 trout season last Sunday
September 2nd. On the day the members fished for
the Clonhugh Cup. This popular event proved
successful with some nice trout coming on line.
Normally the presentation of the Clonhugh Cup
takes place in Mullallys Boat House, but due
to high water levels this year it was held in the
Tullaghan Angling Centre. On the day L.O.T.P.A.
club rules applied and a 13 inch size limit &
4-fish bag limit applied. The 13 inch size
limit spans from the tip of the nose to the V in
the trout's tail. As a rule most anglers carry
measuring tapes. Those of you who don't should
invest in one. Anyway to get back to the
competition, it was Mick Malone who topped the
field with a good trout weighing 0. 940kg. This
was followed by Athlone angler Steve Turner with a
fish 0.850kg, and 3rd was Mullingar angler Ollie Mahedy. The junior winner was young Carl Owens
from Dublin who is a regular angler here on the
Midland lakes. Carl landed a fish weighing
0.670kg. Unfortunately club Chairman Andy Boyle
was not available for the presentation due to
other commitments. Assistant Chairman Brendan
Murray deputised for Andy and presented the
winners with their just awards. Also that evening
the Tommy McCormack Cup was presented to the club
member who recorded the best gross weight of trout
during 2007 competitions. This was won for the
second year by Athlone angler Steven Turned. Steve
produced over 8kg of trout during the club
competitions. As mentioned that's the last club
competition of the season, but the last day
competition on October 12 is something to look
forward to. As the norm after the Clonhugh Cup
refreshments were provided for all anglers and
their partners. The club would like to thank
all who supported their competitions over the
season and their many sponsors for their support.

ENNELL TROUT ...
We are all to well aware of how hard Ennell
fishes, but when it does produce a trout, it's
hard to match. Last week young Tullamore angler
Robert Connolly was trolling with his Granddad and
landed a cracking trout from Ennell. The deadly
duo have featured in Angling Focus over the years
and fish out of Lilliput.

Lough Derg Native Fish Biodiversity Project
Towards the sustainable management of Lough Derg's
native fish populations
Project update June 2007
The Lough Derg Native Fish Biodiversity Project is
now is now into its second year and it is timely
that we should have a newsletter just to give people
an update on the developments so far. Its been quite
exciting really and we’ve come along way from our
humble beginnings! Just to recap, the Lough Derg
Native Fish Biodiversity Project (Lough Derg NFB
Project) was set up to answer a number of questions
concerning the native fish community using the most
up-to-date and sophisticated scientific techniques.
Such question include;....
RIVER MULCAIR CO
LIMERICK
The Mulcair river is fishing
well with the Scart and Long Field areas
proving to be the most successful locations.
Reports from anglers suggest good numbers of
fish present in the river. The best methods
seem to be with spinners and worm.
RIVER
SHANNON AND CASTLECONNELL SALMON FISHERY
The O'Briensbridge area, Plassy and
Castleconnell are reported as slow presently
with only a few fish from the Castleconnell
salmon beats (5 & 6). Anglers please be
aware of the regulations and bag limits for
the September salmon fishing.
CONSERVATION OF SALMON AND SEA TROUT BYE-LAW NO.

IMPORTANT ADDITIONAL INFORMATION FOR SALMON ANGLERS - BROWN TAGS
From May 13th, 2007 the Minister introduced a system of Brown Gill
tags for certain rivers where it is considered necessary in the
interests of conserving stocks to closely monitor angling quotas to
ensure river based quotas are not exceeded. The River Mulcair in Co
Limerick is covered by this scheme.
ShRFB reports for the
RIVER FEALE CO KERRY
The weather has been dry and settled for the
past 10 days and water levels have dropped
back on the Feale. The best chance of
catching a few Salmon now is with small
flies fishing early morning or late evening
when the sun goes back in the present fine
spell.
NB: Anglers please note the new
Salmon & Sea Trout Bye Laws for the River
Feale for 2007. See
SHANNON FISHERIES REGION (River Feale) CONSERVATION OF
