LOUGH OWEL ON FIRE AGAIN THIS WEEK AS THE SEASON ADVANCES

The season winds up on many of our fisheries next Sunday September 30th. We will continue to report until October 12th on our Midland lakes. The end of season trout competitions are coming hard and fast at present. we will be keeping you posted on these over the next two weeks. Local anglers are getting good results on Sheelin with some good fish caught on sedge patterns. Not so on Ennell where fishing is extremely slow at the moment. The local club ran a competition last Sunday with 27 anglers failing to weigh a fish. The highlight of the week was Lough Owel which once again is on form with lively sport reported by both pleasure anglers and in the competitions. Catch up on the Lough Ree Anglers Association end of season competitions in their news column. Next Sunday sees the end of the Salmon fishing season in the Shannon Region.  TIGHT LINES!

UPPER SHANNON

LOUGH SHEELIN

Fish are starting to get active again on Sheelin and are being caught on dry sedges. Now that the season is advancing anglers are encouraged to dapp the grasshopper and daddy. Last week some good fish were returned. Thomas Lynch had a fish of 4.5lbs on a Claret Dabbler. Mr Crudden from Northern Ireland caught and released 7 trout. Tommy Quigley, Clones had a nice fish of 3lbs 9ozs at Wilson's Point on a sedge.  Michael Kelly L.S.T.P.A. had 7 fish on dry sedges to 3lbs, all were released.

The L.S.T.P.A. have recently announced their end of season competition on Sheelin to be fished on October 6th. See their website http://www.loughsheelinanglers.ie for further details. Contact Thomas Lynch L.S.T.P.A. Mobile: 087 9132033 or logon to the L.S.T.P.A website http://www.loughsheelinanglers.ie/ for information on competitions and other local news.

MID SHANNON AREA

LOUGH ENNELL

Fishing is extremely slow on Ennell at the moment. The local club ran a competition last Sunday with 27 anglers failing to weigh a fish. Anglers are hoping that the angling might improve as the season draws to a close. Let's hope so! Dr Waldron from Mullingar had one fish of 3.5lbs on a Green Peter.

LOUGH OWEL

Lough Owel is fishing very well with quality fishing reported by anglers. Some great bags of fish were weighed for the Leinster last Saturday, and it is hoped that this trend continues. The best flies were red tailed Peters, Dabblers and Fiery Browns. Brendan Murray fished over 5 evenings and had 21 fish, best 3lbs. John O'Neill and Fran Nugent from Dublin had 7 fish between then for 10.5lbs. Paddy Ward Multifarnham had 8 fish to 2lbs, released 4.  Gerry Heaslip from Dublin had 5 fish to 3lbs. Bernard Kelly Killarney had 3 fish, best 3lbs. There was a very good result in the Leinster Qualifier.  116 anglers caught 139 fish, heaviest fish was 3.5lbs. The top three were J Cahill Mullingar, M Mc Cormack and Paddy Ward. Prospects look good again for the coming week.

ANGLING EXPERTS IN TULLAMORE...

The National Ploughing championships are taking place this week. Thursday September 27th will be the last day. At this years championships the Central and Regional Fishery Boards have a huge stand with staff from all the seven boards on hand to give their advice on angling in Ireland. Fly tying demonstrations are taking place over the 3- day ploughing championships, plus there is a colouring competition for children with some great prizes up for grabs. This is an ideal chance to get some information on angling across Ireland and Tullamore is only a few miles from town.

OWEL TROUT IN THE FRAME...

Photo: James Meehan on Owel
Early last week my two good friends from Dublin came to the Midlands for a few days. Niall O'Brien who keeps our fishing columns on line, being the computer wizard that he is was in town along with pal James Meehan. James was one of the
founders of Inpho photographic agency, but in recent years he has hung up the cameras and is photo editor with the Mail on Sunday. Mind you he still has not lost the eye for taking photos, and we had plenty of opportunities last week. Over the 3- days on Owel we boated some cracking fish pushing towards 3lbs. Niall was fishing
with Pat Keenaghan and their best flies were simulators and dabblers. I fished with James and on Tuesday evening I hooked-up with a super Owel trout almost 3lbs in weight. This cracking fish took a pearly dabbler. The lake is fishing very well at present and is well worth a few days before the season ends on October 12th. Boat and engine hire on the lake contact Jack Doolan on 044-93- 42085. There will be an open competition on the last day of the season so keep this date free.

ENNELL ANGLERS...

Last Sunday Lough Ennell anglers hosted the O'Malley Cup. On the day no fish were caught. Sundays fishing conditions were not bad but unfortunately the Ennell trout failed to rise to the occasion. The competition will be re-run on Saturday October 6th. The club members are in action this Sunday September 30th. On the day the popular Christy Sleator Cup will be top prize. Hopefully we will see some cracking Ennell trout being caught.

SOCIAL COMMITTEE COMPETITION...

With the end of the season upon us competitions are coming thick and fast and last Sunday week we had the Social Committee competition. Despite the harsh conditions on the day this competition still attracted a good turnout however the trout brought to the scales were few and far between. The weigh in and presentation of prizes took place in Gertie’s and our thanks to Michael Loughman for his excellent hospitality. The winners were Eamon, Eamon Jnr and Edward McCormack whose Trout topped the scales on the night and were presented with a new silver cup which was donated to the club by Kate Flynn, our thanks to Kate for her generosity. We would also like to thank the hard working social committee of Helen Conway and Geraldine Rohan for not alone organising and sponsoring this competition but for all the work they do throughout the year culminating in the annual presentation night which this year will take place on Saturday 1st December. Last Sunday the competition for the Halligan Cup in aid of the hatchery took place and attracted an excellent turnout of fifty three boats with all entry fees going to the up keep and running of this fine facility. We thank all the people involved from all the clubs and in particular Sean Kelly and Conor Hannon from our own club for all the hard work they put in. The competition, which was sponsored by Hannon Sand and Gravel, was won by Martin Mulvihill on a day when it seems the best method was dapping with at least three of the prize winning fish caught by this method.

CONWAY/CONROY COMPETITION

This is the last competition of the season and will take place next Sunday, 30th September. The competition will start from Gallagher’s Boat shed at 10.30am and will finish with lines up at 6pm. The weigh in and presentation of prizes will take place in the Coosan Tavern with the scales down at 8.30pm sharp.

FOR YOUR DIARY...

The following is the schedule of competitions that it is proposed to hold over the next couple of weeks. Please note this list may change due to unforeseen circumstances, however the details of each competition will be published in the local newspaper, on the posters, the Athlone.ie website and sent out to members by text message in the week prior to each competition.
