LOUGH OWEL AND ENNELL THE FORM TROUT FISHERIES AS WE APPROACH THE LAST WEEK OF THE SEASON

The season has closed on many of the Board's fisheries, Some of our lakes remain open to October 12th and we will continue to report on these. Michael Flanagan keeps us informed on the upcoming competitions and reports on the locally improved fishing. Lough Ennell has suddenly sprung to life and worth trying for the last week of the season. Lough Owel continues to be one of the form fisheries with plenty of quality trout caught. Lively trout action was reported on the Upper River Suck around Ballymoe.   TIGHT LINES!

UPPER SHANNON

They caught the fish on Green Peter in ideal angling conditions. On Lough O'Flynn they fished on Sunday evening September 23rd. They caught their bag limit of 6 fish. The best results were with dry sedges and wet Peter.

MID SHANNON AREA

LOUGH ENNELL

There was much improved fishing on Ennell since last week with plenty of good fish showing. A hatch of small olives are helping to bring the fish up and this might make for a good end of season finale on Ennell which has been slow for most of the season. Best flies were red tailed Peters, Murroughs and Olives. Conor Lynch, Clara had 3 fish, best 4lbs. Enda Mc Cabe Dublin had a fish of 2.5lbs.  L.E.T.P.A, held the Sleator Cup trout competition on Sunday 30th September, 11 anglers caught 6 fish. The results were

  • 1st Place: Jim Horan, Mullingar with a fish of 3.47lbs.

Mick Flanagan, Angling correspondent and photographer for Sunday World and Topic group of newspapers Tel: 087 2797270: mick@midlandangling.com reports on Midland Lakes & Rivers.

Well it's hard to believe another trout season has ended on Lough Lene and now that we are drifting into October there is only a handful of days left on Owel, Ennell, Derravaragh and Sheelin. All of our other brown trout lakes will close on October 12th. It's not the end of the world mind you. We have some fantastic all year round Rainbow trout lakes in and around the Midlands and over the winter months we will be checking these out.

CHRISTY SLEATOR CUP....
The Christy Sleator Cup fished last Sunday September 30th proved very successful on Ennell. It is regarded as one of the toughest lakes to crack, but the rewards are great. On the day six trout were weighed in and quite a few fish were on
the move we are told. Top Rod was Irish Rail employee Jimmy Horan. Jimmy was a very popular winner and he produced a cracking Ennell trout of 3.47lbs, tapping at Jimmy's heels was Top Dublin angler Dave Mc Bride of the famous Mc Brides Angling Centre. Dave produced a super trout of 3.14lbs and in 3rd place was Martin Mc Gorian with another fine fish of 2.37lbs. Ennell anglers are in action in the coming weeks.

PLEASURE ANGLING ....
Last Friday I was out on Lough Owel for a few hours. The lake is still producing some fine trout. Plenty of trout to 2lbs plus in weight are on the move and  they are providing some excellent sport as the season closes in. I managed 3 trout on Friday, two on wets and one on the dry late into the evening. Plenty of other anglers had success on the day. Well known Mullingar angler Aidan Gibney was fishing with
angling pal Davie Murray and the lads had some fine trout. Aidan hooked-up with a cracking fish just before dark.

UPCOMING EVENTS...
I hope I leave no competition out this week, as the competition schedule is full. On Saturday October 6th Lough Ennell Anglers will host the O'Malley Cup Fly Fishing. Fishing 11am-6pm. On Sunday October 7th Lakeland Anglers host their End of
season trout competition. This is a huge event and you can fish Ennell, Owel, or Derravaragh. Starting at 10-30 am and weigh-in in Caffreys Bar & Lounge 8pm sharp. Also on Sunday October 7th Derravaragh anglers host the Prendergast / Knockeyne trout fly fishing competition.
