TROUT ANGLING SEASON
ENDS ON A LIVELY NOTE ON OWEL
The trout angling season has ended for
another year. It was a good finale with lots of action. Ennell was somewhat
disappointing contrary to expectations but Owel did not disappoint
and most anglers expressed their satisfaction with the fishing.
Catch up on all these stories in our main report. This ends
the Game angling update for another season. We will feature any
important fisheries news updates, so return from time to time to see
what's new. TIGHT LINES!
UPPER SHANNON

LOUGH SHEELIN
Three visiting anglers Andrew Browne
and friend Bob Presley recorded 10 trout to the close day October
12th, best 6lbs, flies used were Bibio, Dabblers, dry sedges. All
fish were released. Michael Kelly L.S.T.P.A. recorded 20 fish over
4 trips, best 2 fish were 2.5lbs on dry fly. Local angler John
Farley had 1 good fish of 6lbs on sedge. 10 other pleasure anglers
caught and released over 20 fish. On the final day of the season
anglers reported a good number of fish and ended with a BBQ in
Patrick O'Reilly's pub in Kilnaleck.
Dr Brian Lalor, PRO L.S.T.P.A.
reports on the second annual stream rehabilitation fly-fishing
competition
''The second annual stream
rehabilitation flyfishing competition organised by The Lough
Sheelin Trout Protection Association took place on Saturday the
6th of October. There was a large entry of 108 boats with 216
anglers taking part from all over Ireland. The weather conditions
were difficult with thick fog until lunch time and a flat calm for
the rest of the day. Anglers reported that although plenty of
rising fish were seen they were shy and reluctant to rise to the
artificial fly. Fourteen keepable fish were nevertheless bagged
with first prize of a Lough Sheelin 19 foot boat going to Gary
Stewart of Derry with a fine wild Lough Sheelin brownie of 2 lb 2
oz. Second prize with a fish of 1 lb 12 oz went to Jim Condron of
County Meath third to Geoffrey Hylands of County Down. Fourth
prize went to one of many lady entrants, Linda Straghan of Armagh
who won what must be a unique prize for a fishing competition, a
lawnmower donated by PJ Callan of Ardee!
Money collected from the entrance fees will be used to improve the
spawning beds and rivers for the Lough Sheelin trout. Evidence of
an improvement in the stocks of large brown trout as a result of
previous spawning enhancement work is already being seen in the
improved angling returns on Lough Sheelin during the 2007
season as a whole.''

LOUGH ENNELL
The fishing on Ennell this year was
very disappointing and anglers found the going
extremely tough on many occasions but especially
towards the end of season when the Ennell trout
would normally feed well before spawning.
Mick Finlay and David Callaghan from Portlaoise had
3 fish over 3 days - 1.5lbs, 2.5lbs and 3.5lbs. In
the Lakeland Anglers competition 20 anglers caught
2 fish and was won by John Brennan.

Flanagan,
The end of season fishing did not disappoint and
most anglers expressed their satisfaction with the
fishing on Owel. In particular they were pleased
with the amount of good quality fish, most of
which were stockies, that came to the fly over the
last four weeks of the season. Over 100 fish were
officially returned for the week. Some fine fish
were caught. Shane Cullen and Andy Duncan
Mullingar each had the best reported fish of the
week at 4.5lbs on Monday the 8th October and
October 11th respectively. Michael Flanagan and
friend had 12 fish over 4 days, fish averaging
1.5lbs. Peter Mc Carton and Andy Young had 8
fish between (3 released) best 3.5lbs. Peter
Doherty and Denis Goulding from Kildare Joe
Vickers Tullamore had 4 fish for 6lbs on Tuesday
October 9th. Brendan Murray, Mullingar had 5 fish,
best 3.5lbs. There were other good returns
received - well done to all. Angling
has finished now on all the Board’s waters and
will resume next year on the 1st March.-
join us then. See Michael Flanagan's report for
details of the end of season trout competitions.

It has been a hectic week, with the trout season
coming to an end on Friday last 12th
October. I spent the week fishing and have a huge
number of pics from the last few days. I had a bit
of luck on Ennell on the last day and won the end
of season competition. On Owel Joe Sharry topped
the day.
END OF TROUT SEASON...
Photo: Marty Smith on Owel.
Well it's all over now and it was a great week to
end the trout fishing. The weather was great and
we had no rain for the last few days. Local and
visiting anglers enjoyed some great fishing on
Owel I spent 3 days on Owel and met a lot of
local faces fishing out the end of season. On
Thursday Mullingar auctioneer Andy Duncan was
fishing with our good friend Marty Smith and the
lads had some cracking trout. I spent the day with
Lough Owel Chairman Andy Boyle and we had a great
day out. The crack with Andy was priceless and we
even managed a few trout. On Friday the end of
season competition took place on Owel and Ennell.
Joe Sharry topped Lough Owel with a fine fish of
3lbs, hot on his heels was Mullingar angler
Brendan Murray with 2.6lbs and 3rd was Dublin
angler Peter Mc Glynn with 2.212lbs. The
competition was well supported and all proceeds
from the day goes towards stocking Lough Owel. On
Ennell the anglers hosted a sweep day and the
O'Malley Cup was also fished. On the day I fished
with Niall O'Brien from Lucan. Niall is our
computer wizard and on the night of the
presentation in Caffreys he provided a splendid
slide show of pictures I took throughout the 2007
season. It went down a treat, just like the few
pints after a hard season. I had a bit of luck on
Ennell and landed a super trout weighing 3.364lbs,
in second place was Aidan Heffernan with 2.062lbs.
As we mentioned the presentation was held in
Caffreys Bar & Lounge. the competition organizers
would like to thank the Caffrey family for the use
of the premises. T.P. Farrell, Jack Doolan,
Leonard Geoghan, Stan Mc Keown, and Niall O' Brien
for their sponsorship.

GARDA ON OWEL...

The Garda Salmon and Trout anglers were in action
recently on Lough Owel. They hosted their end of
season competition on Owel and on the day local
Garda Barry Rogers took top rod place. There was a
good turn out of anglers on the day and this is
the second year that Barry has won this event. The
Garda salmon and trout anglers would like to thank
all who supported and sponsored this competition.
PRESENTATION....
On Friday Morning last a presentation took place
at Tullaghan. Dermot Broughan on behalf of the
Shannon Regional Fishery Board was presented with
a framed picture of the 1990 International fly
fishing teams which competed on Owel that year.
The pictured were presented by Dermott Caffery on
behalf of Paddy and May Gallagher. The team
pictures will be on display in the new Angling
Centre at Tullaghan.
UPCOMING EVENTS...
I am just checking out dates for the Winter Pike
competition season. next week I will have a few
dates for your diary. Now that the brown trout
season is over I will be visiting a few local
rainbow trout waters. These fisheries are very
popular in the winter months and it's great to wet
a line and catch a few super rainbow trout.
