Game Angling & Fisheries News, Announcements, Upcoming Events/Notices & Reports: (Salmon & Trout Fishing)

Dated Wednesday May 9th, 2007

MAYFLY SEASON IS IN FULL SWING ON OUR BIG MIDLAND LAKES LOUGH DERG AND REE

The beautiful weather of last week has been replaced since Sunday by much cooler wet and blustery conditions. The Mayfly season is in full swing on our large midland lakes, Lough Derg and Lough Ree. Fishing on Derg hasn't been as good as expected of late due mainly to the blustery weather. The green fly fishing was short lived and most fish that were caught were taken on the gnat.  Athlone Anglers Association provide up to date news on their local mayfly competitions - watch their space. Elsewhere we are receiving news of better hatches of fly but unfortunately the cool blustery conditions since the weekend are not helping angling. Buzzers are accounting for a few good trout to over 6lbs on Sheelin and Ennell.  TIGHT LINES!

UPPER SHANNON

LOUGH SHEELIN

There wasn't a lot of angling activity evident on Sheelin last week. There were good hatches of sedges in the Bog Bay, Goreport area of the lake. Mayfly have been hatching from early in the week. Blustery conditions spoiled the fishing over the weekend and on Monday. Some good fish were reported on buzzers. On Thursday May 3rd , John McGauran, Bailieborough, had a fish of  5lb 2oz and on Tuesday  May 8th, Pat Delaney, Bailieborough, had a fish of 6lb 10oz.  John Murphy L.S.T.P.A. and his friends caught and released 4 trout on sedges, averaging 1.75lbs in the Crover, Merrypoint area of the lake.  Michael Kelly L.S.T.P.A. had a fish of 1.75lbs on buzzer. If weather permits there should be good spent fishing all this week.

LOUGH O'FLYNN & UPPER RIVER SUCK

The mayfly is up on O'Flynn but fishing has been patchy with the change in the weather over the weekend. Most anglers had better fishing when it was sunny and warm earlier last week but fish appear to be sultry over recent days. Anthony Baggot fished for a few hours on Wednesday evening. He had two fish for 5lbs on a claret dabbler. He observed some fish rising. Let's hope the wind drops a little.

MID SHANNON AREA

LOUGH ENNELL

Some good fish were caught on Ennell. Despite the fact that there were good hatches of buzzer the fish did not continue feeding on them. Anglers have seen some small hatches of Mayfly but nothing to interest the fish just yet. John Kearney, Meath and Andy Duncan, Mullingar had 3 fish each on buzzers. Ravennelli Consindine and Vincenzo Magwa also had some luck fishing buzzers dry.

For updates contact Pat Mc Donnell, Fisheries Officer  Shannon Regional Fisheries Board Mullingar  Office Tel: 044 9348769 mornings

LOUGH OWEL

Few enough anglers fished Owel, but this is to be expected as the Mayfly season gets into full swing on other lakes. Tommy Smith, Dublin had the best reported fish of the week at 3lbs. Christy Dunne and M. Maloney, Rhode and M Francis, Dublin had 4 fish each for 6lbs on fly. Brendan Murray, Mullingar had two fish on April 27th and two further fish on April 30th. Barry Lenihan, Mullingar had3 fish for 4.5lbs. Fred Nolan, Mullingar had two fish for 3.5lbs.

MAY-FLY MADNESS HITTING THE MIDLANDS...

Yep it's that time of year and may fly madness is starting to get a grip on us Midland anglers. I am taking a break from the pike fishing in the coming weeks and hopefully we have some super pics and reports from the may fly season. The May bank holiday weekend was very busy on the local front.

 LOUGH ENNELL..

With the arrival of may-fly on Ennell boats are starting to appear on the lake. Hopefully in the coming weeks we will get some cracking fish. On the competition scene next Sunday May 13th the Leinster I.T.F.F.A. qualifier will be  fished on Ennell. Fishing is from 10am-6pm with start and finish Whitebridge Bay. All angler supplying boats are asked to have them launched before 9-30pm. It's an open draw for partners so please don't have your angling partner waiting on the day. There are eight places up for grabs on the day and all anglers are wished the best of luck. Dinner and presentation of prizes in the Greville Arms Hotel at 8-30pm. I.T.F.F.A. would like to thank the Lough Ennell Trout Preservation Association and the ShRFB for their assistance and support in organizing this years Leinster qualifier. On the Lough Ennell club scene the first trout competition of the season takes place on May 27th. On the day the Jimmy Nea Cup will be fished. More on this later.

ANGLING TUITION ....

In recent years RAI - Recreational Angling Ireland have being holding Angling Tuition course across Ireland covering Game , Coarse , and sea angling. RAI are a thirty two county non profit organization which give instruction and demonstrations on angling. Young people with no experience are given priority on these tuition days. Some of Ireland's top angling experts in the field of game, coarse and sea fishing give their time free and it's an opportunity not to be missed. Not alone does the day course cover angling, it also looks at good waterside management, the environment, and most import safety on or near the water. There are a few requirements that RAI put forward. each young person must be accompanied by an adult/guardian. Life jacket,  hat and glasses (Sunglasses or prescription) should be worn. On warm days sunblock and insect repellent are recommended. If you  have your own fishing tackle take it along, but don't worry as tackle will be provided on the day. Wear appropriate waterproof clothing and footwear. Finally the day starts at 11am and finishes at 4pm. R.A.I. accept no responsibility after 4pm. This is an ideal opportunity for local clubs to get some of their younger members some expert tuition, and it would add a great social life to you club. Unfortunately Westmeath is not included in the program. On May 19th trout angling on Lough Bo Co Sligo will be covered. On May 26th coarse angling will be covered on the River Suck at Donamon Co Galway. In June & July waters in Cavan and Meath will hold RAI Angling Tuition days and we will keep you posted on these . The project manager is David Browne and he can be contacted on 087-9249346.

GONE LIVE..

Over the past few Thursday nights I have dropped into Midlands radio at Harbour Place. On the night well known Mullingar music expert Davy Hynes has a two hour long show featuring local talent and interesting talking points from the Midland area. Anyway  I drop into Davie between 8pm and 10pm on Thursday night and give a run down on what's happening in the Angling World around Westmeath. Listen in this Thursday night and check out our angling slot. Westmeath Showcase at 96.5

LOUGH REE MAYFLY UPDATE

The Mayfly seems to be well up on Ree and anglers are reporting plenty of fish. Normally the mayfly hatch would not start until the third week in May but because of the warm weather, nature is early this year and anglers have seen lots of spent, some of which have gone out. A mixture of dry green fly, spent, dapp and wet flies are all working at the moment. Some lovely fish were caught. The best reported fish of the week at 5.5lbs was caught by John McGeehan, Athlone on the dapp. Peter Sleator, Athlone had a nice fish of 4.5lbs. There was a change in weather on Sunday. Steve Turner and Philip Cunningham, Athlone had 5 fish to 3lbs. Hughie Reid & J McGeehan, Athlone had a few fish to 3lbs on wet flies on Monday May 7th. J. Duffy, Athlone, Pat Daly, Longford, Cormac Doyle, Athlone and W. Mc Keirnan, Athlone had some fish over the past few days.

RITCHIE'S FANTASTIC TROUT WINS THE LOUGH REE INN CUP ...

Last Sunday saw the first of our Dapp competitions, the Lough Ree Inn Cup, which coincided with the first good hatches of Mayfly. While the Mayfly is now hatching in good numbers the hatch is very localized and has not yet spread across the lake but it is expected by the end of this week that it will. The day itself had a strong wind blowing from the west but there was still a good turnout on the shoreline that morning and just to show how important the Mayfly is to anglers and that nothing will get between an angler and his fishing Bud Sharkey turned up complete with broken leg and crutches! He was accompanied by Jonathon O’Rourke and Jimmy Flanagan who were both celebrating their birthdays, Jonathon capped his celebrations by landing a nice trout but unfortunately it was not good enough to get in the prizes.
There was only a few fish caught but those that were brought to the weigh in, which was held in the Lough Ree Inn, were of excellent size and quality and for the second week in a row it was a Fallon name at the top of the leader board.
This week it was Richie Fallon, and his fantastic trout was the clear winner and caused quite a stir at the weigh in when he was put on the scales. Thomas Killion, who won this competition last year, claimed second prize for his trout which on most other days would have been good enough to win but on this occasion was 1lb 4ozs lighter than the winner. Paul Fallon, father to Richie and who won last weeks competition along with his brother Joe, was third with a trout which was 9ozs lighter. Fourth place went to Tony Doolan for his trout which was 10ozs lighter.
Our thanks to Kieran Keavney, who has just taken over the Lough Ree Inn, for his very generous sponsorship of this competition and for the excellent hospitality and the music on the night. We would like to take this opportunity to wish Kieran the best of luck in his new venture and if Sunday night was anything to go by he has got off to a great start.

THE TEDDY BROWNE MEMORIAL CUP .....
Next weeks competition will be for the Teddy Browne Memorial Cup and will start at 10am from Gallagher’s Boat Shed and finish with lines up at 7pm. The weigh in and presentation of prizes will take place that evening in Gerties with the scales down at 9pm sharp.
The normal monthly competitions have now started and are as follows, The Genoa Cup will be awarded to the heaviest trout caught over the three competition Sundays. The Monday to Saturday competition will start on Monday 7th May and will finish on Saturday 2nd June. The Athlone Anglers Association Cup will be awarded for the heaviest tout caught during this period, excluding Sundays.
There will also be another competition over this period and will cost €15 to enter, all money taken in will be given out to the top three fish weighed in the order of 50% for first place, 30% for second place and 20% for third place. This competition also excludes the Sundays and you must register your entry before going fishing, you can do this by ringing Eamon Cunningham on 087-2340815 before 11am on the day you start fishing or on the shoreline on Sunday mornings. The scales will be left in the Lough Ree Inn and anglers can use this to record their catch. Text Messages detailing the heaviest fish caught during the Dapp will be sent at regular intervals to inform anglers of the weights of the trout weighed in. This will help ensure that trout are not needlessly brought in for weighing and can be returned unharmed to the lake should you wish.

FOR YOUR DIARY...
The following is the schedule of competitions that it is proposed to hold over the next few weeks. Please note this list may change due to unforeseen circumstances, however the details of each competition will be published in the local newspaper, on the posters, the Athlone.ie website and sent out to members by text message in the week prior to each competition.

  • May 13th – Teddy Browne Cup, Dapp.

  • May 20th - Barra Flynn Memorial Cup, Dapp Home and Away.

MAYFLY UPDATE ON LOUGH DERG

Still plenty of Mayfly hatching on Derg and anglers are hoping that the fish will stay on the Mayfly for another week or so. While some quality fish were reported on the dry mayfly and on the dapp fishing has slowed down over the past number of days, particularly since the weekend.  Sean Maher, Nenagh had the best reported fish of the week at 5lbs. Other close contenders were Michael Stevans, Dublin who had 2 fish of 4lbs 9ozs and 2lbs. Gerry Mulligan, Nenagh had two fish on the dapp - 4.5lbs and 4.25lbs. Wet flies worked well for some anglers. Noel King, Nenagh had a fish for 4.5lbs. Frank Kenna and friend, Mullingar had 6 fish to 3lb, they released 4 fish. Peter Duggan and Noel King from Nenagh also had a few fish on wet flies.

LOUGH DERG NATIVE FISH BIO DIVERSITY PROJECT INFORMATION REQUEST

What is it all about?

This year anglers, Non-Government-Organisations, universities in Ireland and Canada and the Shannon Regional Fisheries Board have joined forces to try and identify and understand more clearly the native fish biodiversity of Lough Derg. Biodiversity means the diversity of living things and includes genetic diversity. This project is called the Lough Derg Native Fish Biodiversity Project (Lough Derg NFB Project) and aims to answer a number of questions using the most up-to-date and sophisticated scientific techniques. We need your feedback.

TJ O'Brien, TJ's ANGLING CENTRE KILLALOE Tel: 061 376009 Mob 087 8108225 reports for the Lower Shannon, Lough Derg

Photo: This fine Derg trout was caught by local angler Kevin Grimes, Killaloe

The trout fishing up to now has been slow on certain areas of the lake with not as much green fly fishing as other years. We had “Spent Gnat” fishing very early due to the exceptional warm period and at present it seems that fishing has slowed down greatly with anglers unable to get out to a lot of the favourite areas due to the strong winds. Hopefully the winds will abate enough towards the week-end to allow more anglers out on the lake.
