SOME NICE EARLY SEASON TROUT
REPORTED FROM LOUGH OWEL
The new season kicked off on Thursday last March
1st on most of the regions game fisheries. There were no anglers out on Ennell
but Owel did produce a few nice fish getting the season off to a start here. The
Athlone Anglers Association are to commence their first competition of the season
next weekend. Unfortunately, weather has been very stormy and inclement which
played havoc with pleasure angling and competitions over the weekend. This
unsettled spell is set to continue off and on for the rest of the week. The Salmon fishing
season commenced on the River Feale on Thursday March 1st with only two fish
reported caught to date. A huge flood on Monday should get some fresh fish
moving into the system. More on this next week. Many Clubs had their AGM's and
Michael Flanagan and other club officials keeps us up to date on these.

TROUT ABOUT THE MIDLAND LAKES & RIVERS
Off we go into another trout angling season here in Westmeath
and the opening few days produced some splendid catches. Plenty of
boats ventured out on Lene and quite a few on Owel. We received no
reports from Ennell, but I hope to spend some time on it this week.
The competition scene was hit on Sunday with the strong winds
forcing Lough Glore anglers to cancel, mind you we received some
photos of monster Midland pike caught on Saturday. Also over the
weekend we ventured up to Dublin for the specimen fish awards.
TROUT GAME ON OWEL..
The trout were fairly gamey on Owel on the opening day as Ronnie
Minnock who is (Field Operations Manager) with Scientific Games
Worldwide Ltd which is located on the Athlone Road heading for
Ballymahon. Ronnie and angling pal Joe McCarthy landed some fine
trout from Owel, the best weighing an impressive 2.25lbs.The deadly
duo boated four fish, two fish which were wild and two well
conditioned over wintered stocked fish. Trolling produced the goods
on the day, despite the lads trashing the water for three and a half
hours with the fly. We also received reports of Mullingar anglers Tom
& Philip Smith taking some fine trout on the opening day. All in all
it's looking good for Owel and with the A.G.M. on line all will be
revealed about the planned stocking of rainbow trout. Another great
asset to Owel this season will be the Angling Centre at Tullaghan.
All going well this will open very shortly. More on this later.
GLORE A.G.M....
Lough Glore anglers held their Annual General meeting last Sunday
evening in Murray's Bar & Lounge Castlepollard. This strong North
Westmeath Angling Club is going from strength to strength and a very
active committee were elected for the coming season. Once again
paddy Smith took the reins as club Chairman with mark Donoghue as
assistant, Derek King is Secretary for 2007, Derek is a real hard
worker and will do a fine job as secretary. Guarding the purse for
Glore as Treasure is Peter Smith. Brian Seary is PRO with Peter
Mallon acting as youth officer. As you can see it's a good team of
officers and they will be very active in the coming season.
DERRAVARAGH A.G.M....

times - Dermot Broughan ShRFB on laptop at Derravaragh A.G.M. with
Paddy Ward, Jimmy Nally and Liam Gilsenan - photo courtesy of Michael
Flanagan, Mullingar.
On Friday week night Lough Derravaragh held their annual general
meeting in Weirs bar & Lounge Multyfarnham, Once again this meeting
was well attended on the night. The meeting was opened by club
Chairman Jimmy Nally and called on Derravaragh Secretary paddy ward
to read the minutes from the 2006 A.G.M. Paddy gave a indepth detail
of the minutes and they were passed by the members of Derravaragh.
The Chairman spoke very highly of his fellow officers and especially
Paddy Ward, Tom Newman and Liam Gilsenan who over the years have
really made his job easy. Also Jimmy thanked all who sponsored
Derravaragh competitions and other club functions. One highlight
being the Annual Dinner in An Tin Tan restaurant in Multyfarnham. On
the competition scene things are looking good for Derravaragh
anglers and trout numbers are starting to increase on the lake, This
is all due to the ongoing work by the Derravaragh anglers and the
ShRFB. on the feeder streams. Over the past few seasons thousands of
fingerling trout have being stocked into Derravaragh streams and
this summer more work will be carried out by the club members. On
this point Jimmy asked all members young and old to get involved in
this work. At the end of the day it will improve fishing on
Derravaragh. He also thanked all who campaigned for the ban on jet
skies on Derravaragh. This was a great victory for Derravaragh
especially with the history & folklore surrounding the lake.
Derravaragh is world famous for the Children of Lir story. Finally
Jimmy once again thanked all his fellow officers and club members on
their support during 2006 and looks forward to working with them in
2007. Next up was the Treasures report, which was crystal clear and
Derravaragh have one of the best treasures in the Business Liam
Gilsenan. The treasures report was passed without questions and Liam
thanked fellow officers Paddy Ward and Tom Newman who really dug
deep in getting serious funds for Derravaragh Angling Association.
He also thanked all who supported the annual raffle which once again
proved a huge success for Derravaragh anglers. Next up was the
election of officers. This is as 2006 with one change being Mick
Hayden being appointed Competition Captain for the coming season and
his assistant is Joe Keena. The lads have a very busy season ahead
of them starting with the Weir Cup for pike on March 18th next. Club
membership is set at €20.00 and all members must wear lifejackets
when fishing on the lake. All in all there is ten competitions
pencilled in for the coming season and they are really great days
out which should be enjoyed by all family members. Derravaragh is a
club going forward and angling is a fantastic sport for young & old.
New members are always more than welcome.
ST PATRICK'S DAY-FLOAT YOUR BOAT....

parade, Recently I was speaking to some of the committee members of
this years event and I am quite sure you would be welcome to "float
your boat on the day" if any of you fellow anglers or angling clubs

MC CORMACK CUP GETS FISHING SEASON UNDERWAY.....
The trout fishing season officially started last Thursday on Lough
Ree and plenty of anglers spent a very enjoyable if cold day on the
lake with mixed results. With the season now underway it is time to
start the competitions, last Sunday should have seen the first
competition to take place but it had to be cancelled due to the severe
weather conditions so next Sunday, 11th March, is when the first
competition will now take place. It will be for the Seamus McCormack
Memorial Cup and will start from Coosan Point at 10.30am and finish
at 5pm. The Captain of the Day will be Michael Ganly and the weigh
in and presentation of prizes will take place that evening in a
venue which will be announced on the morning of the competition with
the scales down at 8.30pm sharp. The proceeds from this competition
will be donated to SOLR and the Lough Ree Preservation Society.
The committee will be meeting this Tuesday night to decide the
schedule for the next few competitions and it will be published next week. Also we have started a phone text service
which will give you details of competitions, events, cancellations
etc. If you wish to be included in this service please make sure
that the committee have your mobile telephone number or you can text

ShRFB reports for the
RIVER FEALE CO KERRY
Up to eighty anglers fished the River Feale on
the opening day Thursday March 1st in nice
fishing water. Alas, fishing was slow
despite the good conditions. Alan Sugrue had the first
reported fish of about 11lbs caught on a
spinner at Barrett's fishery in Listowel,
well done Alan! Joe Divine, Newcastle
West, Co Limerick had a fish of about 6lbs.
There was a
huge flood on Monday March 5th which should
move some fresh run springers into the
system. Let's hope this materialises. We'll
keep you posted on next weeks update. Join
us then. TIGHT LINES!
NB: Anglers please
