MAYFLY CONTINUE TO
HATCH IN ABUNDANCE ON SHEELIN WITH SOME EXCELLENT RESULTS
Recent heavy rain has risen
water levels with a few Salmon reported caught on the River Feale
and more heavy rain is forecast for the weekend which should provide
some ideal angling conditions on the fishery.
One would expect the trout fishing on our midland lakes to go into a
traditional lull period in June. Not so this year on some of our
fisheries! The Mayfly
continues to hatch in abundance on Sheelin and is providing some
excellent sport for a Dublin angler. Lough O'Flynn is also in form
with lots of fish reported caught this week by anglers fly fishing
with fast sink lines. Also in the news is the River Suck around
Ballymoe with a specimen trout 5.5lbs caught here along with other
beautiful fish to nearly 4lbs on dry sedges in the rising water.
There is the odd good trout coming off Ennell, but fishing is
generally slow here. Lough Acalla is fishing well with rainbow up to 3.5lbs reported. TIGHT LINES!
UPPER SHANNON
LOUGH SHEELIN
It's hard to believe that heading
into the end of June that the Mayfly hatches remain abundant on
Sheelin. Michael Kelly, Dublin had some excellent fishing on the green fly and
the gnat over the
week while fishing with Peter O'Reilly. Buzzers and sedges are accounting for some of the
catches. John Mc Gauran L.S.T.P.A. had the best reported
trout of the week, a fine fish of 7lbs 9ozs caught on a spent gnat. Tommy
Curran L.S.T.P.A. had a 2lb fish on spent gnat. Neddie Clinton had
a 2lb fish. Sheelin is worth a try this week.

Fisheries Inspector, Ballinlough
Lough O'Flynn has been
fishing well. Anglers are getting excellent results on
Perch Fry imitations and Muddlers fished deep on
fast sink lines. Two junior anglers Ronan and John
Gaffey had 10 fish to 2lbs, most trout were released. Fish
were caught mostly on muddlers. John and David
Connolly had 10 fish over two evening sessions, all on wet
flies. Bernard Mannion and Matt Foley had 10 fish
between them on
Saturday, on muddlers and dabblers. Peter
Reynolds from Blessington had 4 good fish in a short
evening session, best 2lbs. Declan Mc Goldrick and
Anthony Baggott had 7 fish in an evening on a range
of wet flies including imitation perch fry. The
catch of the week went to Matt Foley on the River
Suck in the Ballymoe area with a specimen trout of
5.25lbs. He caught the fish on a deer hair sedge. He
had two other fine fish at 3.75lbs each. Bernard Mannion had two fish, best 3.75lbs. They met some
other good fish, all on dry sedges in the rising
water.

With a recent stocking, anglers reported the best
fishing of the season so far with bag limits easily
achieved. Fishing was good during daytime hours with
good fly hatches and a good rise of fish. On
average 15 anglers fish each day. The most
successful flies were a range of sedges including
the Green Peter, Black Pennell, Green and Golden
Olives, Muddlers and Peter Ross. All fish caught were
Rainbows. M Fullard had the best reported trout of
the week at 3.5lbs on a Green Peter. P. Boyle had 2
fish of 2.5lbs and 3lbs on the Peter Ross. Angling

LOUGH DERG ANGLERS ASSOCIATION NEWS
The Lough Derg Native Fish Biodiversity Study is
ongoing with the first batch of samples sent to
Canada and Belfast for analysis. The samples consist
of representative samples of perch, pike, roach,
bream, eels and trout. When results are available it
is intended to hold a seminar in Killaloe in the
autumn to deliver the preliminary findings. A random
aging of an 8lb brown trout by Dr Fran Igoe, Shannon
Regional Fisheries Board showed that it lives for 2
years in a river before migrating to the lake and
becoming cannible. It was found to be 8 years old.
Dr Igoe will demonstrate the methodology in aging
scales to anglers in September. The Lough Derg
Native Fish Biodiversity Study members wish to ....
ShRFB reports for the
RIVER FEALE CO KERRY
There was good fishing water for the weekend
on the Feale which attracted a lot of anglers out.
Fishing was slow with
only a few fish reported caught and fish are
scarce on the Feale and Smearlagh. Water
presently is suiting fly and hopefully we'll
have a better report for next week with more
heavy rain expected again tomorrow Thursday and over
the weekend.
Patsy Ryan of Ryan's fishing tackle shop in
Abbeyfeale had the best results with 2 fish
on Sunday. Con Mc Carthy and Stephen Moroney
had a fish each over the weekend. More next
week.
NB: Anglers please note the new
Salmon & Sea Trout Bye Laws for the River
Feale for 2007. See
SHANNON FISHERIES REGION (River Feale) CONSERVATION OF
SALMON AND SEA TROUT BYE LAW NO 816, 2007
This Bye-Law provides for a bag limit of 4
fish (being either salmon or sea trout over 40 cm) from 1 March to 12 May
subject to a daily bag limit of 1 fish during the period. The Bye-law also
incorporates the provisions of the existing Bye-law i.e. an overall
annual bag limit of 10 fish for 2007, a daily bag limit of 3
fish from 13 May to 31 August and a daily bag limit of 1 fish from 1 September
to the end of the season. The Bye-law also provides for the use of single hooks
and prohibits the use of worms as bait once the specified number of fish have
been caught in the specified periods.
