GOOD TROUT AND SALMON FISHING REPORTED OVER RECENT WEEKS

There remains good trout fishing on some of our midland lake fisheries. Sedge hatches on Sheelin were quite prolific and anglers did have success fishing with dry patterns of sedge variants. Lough O'Flynn was also in form with very good hatches of Green Peter. Lough Owel has fished well over past weeks of the Peter season but is slowing down this week. We are staring September right in the face. Soon the end of season trout competitions will be in full swing on the Mullingar lakes. Michael Flanagan will keep us up to date on these and read our report to catch up on recent competition results and other local news. Ennell has been very slow with evening fishing providing the best results. Athlone Anglers Association will be in the news column again with their upcoming competitions scheduled over the coming weeks into September. Eamon Cunningham, their PRO will keep us updated. On the Salmon angling front fishing has been good in the high water on the Mulcair and fishing has been superb on the River Feale with lively action reported. While salmon are showing on the Shannon, they are proving difficult to catch. Weather has settled down over the past week which should allow for more comfortable angling conditions heading into September.  TIGHT LINES!

Mick Flanagan, Angling correspondent and photographer for Sunday World and Topic group of newspapers Tel: 087 2797270: mick@midlandangling.com reports on Midland Lakes & Rivers.

Here we are staring September right in the face. Soon the end of season trout competitions will be in full swing. It is certainly a merry go round when you are keeping in touch with the Angling World. Once again I find myself sorting out photos for this week. Last week we managed to fit in quite a few shots of local colourful
anglers. This week we will try once again. We have pleasure fishing at its best, plus the competition scene was hectic.

PATTI DOOLIN SHIELD..
Lough Owel Trout Preservation Association hosted the Patti Doolan Shield last Sunday week. It proved a huge success with fantastic prizes being presented. On the day Tullamore angler Joe Davis topped the field with a rainbow trout weighing  1.165kg. Second place went to Trim angler Larry O'Sullivan and Mullingar angler Danny Cole took 3rd. Irish rail employee James Horan finished 4th. Tom Dully 5th, Mick McCormack 6th. In all some ten prizes were presented on the day. Mary and Jack Doolan were on hand to present prizes and numerous sponsor also attended the prize giving The junior winner was Carol Owen from Dublin. Over from England was Marty Smith and Dave Hinkles the main sponsors of the Patti Doolan Shield and the lads are having a great week here in Westmeath capital. the club would like to thanks Matry Dave, and all who sponsored the competition. Willie Pensose, Mc Cawley Oil, Joe Murray, Jack Doolan Tommy Nally and L.O.T.P.A.

LOUGH ENNELL CUP...

Lough Ennell anglers hosted the Lough Ennell Perpetual Cup last Sunday in bright conditions. Once again the lake proved hard to fish and the Ennell trout kept their heads down. Very little fly life is present on the lake surface and fish are reluctant to surface feed. Mind you John Brennan produced a cracker to liven the Lough Ennell perpetual Cup. John fishing along with fishing partner Seamus Eighan landed a super trout weighing 3.70lbs. The club have three more competitions coming on line and we will keep you posted on these. Prior to the presentation of prizes John Tyrrell Competition captain thanked all who supported the competition on the day. He also expressed the clubs wishes, on a speedy recovery to David Eighan who was involved in a car accident lately. David is the son of Ennell angler Seamus Eighan and is a regular on the competition scene.

GAME & COUNTRY FAIR ...

Photo: Is their a deal done! Martin Grifferty from Ballinagall  talking to John Meagher last Sunday at the Game & Country Fair in  Birr Castle Demesne. photo courtesy of Michael Flanagan Mullingar.

The 2007 Game and Country Fair proved a huge success with plenty of Westmeath people taking a trip to Birr Castle where this years event took place. Local anglers we believe got plenty of bargains at the angling stands, and a few new lures will be in action on local waters soon. Mullingar electrical Martin Grifferty was spotted chatting to John Meagher of Meagher Lake boats in Borrisokane Co. Tipperary. The Meagher lake boats are very popular here on the Midland lakes and you never know we might see the 19ft Deluxe Model soon.

CLONHUGH CUP....

Lough Owel anglers are in action next Sunday September 2nd. On the day the Clonhugh Cup trout fly fishing competition takes place. This is the last official club
competition and a good turn out is expected on the day. The club enforce a strict 13inch size limit in club competitions and the bag limit is four trout.

PALLAS LAKE CO OFFALY

Neil Marsh reports on his recent trip to Pallas Lake

What a great time I had at Pallas lake recently. I have fished the lake many times over the past fifteen years and have always enjoyed the experience. However, this year was exceptional, all four visits produced double figure amounts of fish, largest brown 2.5lbs and best rainbow a little smaller. During the daytime any black wet or dry fly and in the evening Green Peters worked very well. Weather was very showery or even torrential at times during the visits. Despite this I had great time and good chat with many locals including your local fisheries officer who was most helpful. Once again many thanks, roll on next year!

For general updates contact  Dinny Coyne Chairperson of the Pallas Lake Angling Club Tel: 087 2974306.

LOUGH ACALLA CO GALWAY

Oliver Calfey from Ballinasloe fished Lough Acalla on a dull 28th July and used a yellow wet fly to catch a 2lb brown trout which he returned alive.

Lough Derg Native Fish Biodiversity Project

Towards the sustainable management of Lough Derg's native fish populations

Project update June 2007

The Lough Derg Native Fish Biodiversity Project is now is now into its second year and it is timely that we should have a newsletter just to give people an update on the developments so far. Its been quite exciting really and we’ve come along way from our humble beginnings! Just to recap, the Lough Derg Native Fish Biodiversity Project (Lough Derg NFB Project) was set up to answer a number of questions concerning the native fish community using the most up-to-date and sophisticated scientific techniques. Such question include;....

RIVER MULCAIR CO LIMERICK

The River Mulcair has fished well over the past couple of weeks. It's good to see that anglers are releasing plenty of Salmon.

RIVER SHANNON AND CASTLECONNELL SALMON FISHERY

There's plenty of Salmon showing in the lower Shannon system - but fish are proving difficult to catch, hence poor results of late. Fish are tending to hold up in the pools and not running straight through the system. Local angler Kevin Cooke caught and released 2 fish on fly on beat 6 Castleconnell Salmon Fishery.

CONSERVATION OF SALMON AND SEA TROUT BYE-LAW NO.  814, 2006

This Bye-Law provides for an annual bag limit of 10 fish for 2007, a season bag limit of 1 fish in the period 1 Jan to 12 May, a daily bag limit of 3 fish from 13 May to 31 August and a daily bag limit of 1 fish from 1 September to the end of the season. The Bye-law also provides for the use of single hooks and prohibits the use of worms as bait once the specified number of fish have been caught in the specified periods and revokes the existing limit Bye –law.

IMPORTANT ADDITIONAL INFORMATION FOR SALMON ANGLERS - BROWN TAGS

From May 13th, 2007 the Minister introduced a system of Brown Gill tags for certain rivers where it is considered necessary in the interests of conserving stocks to closely monitor angling quotas to ensure river based quotas are not exceeded. The River Mulcair in Co Limerick is covered by this scheme.

ShRFB reports for the RIVER FEALE CO KERRY

Over the past few weeks Salmon fishing on the River Feale has been nothing short of superb. The system has enjoyed  great runs of fresh fish and anglers had lively action on the dropping floods. At time of writing water levels have tapered back and fishing is presently confined to fly fishing the holding pools. We will provide some catch returns and the fishy stories later. Watch this space!

NB: Anglers please note the new Salmon & Sea Trout Bye Laws for the River Feale for 2007. See

SHANNON FISHERIES REGION (River Feale) CONSERVATION OF SALMON AND SEA TROUT BYE LAW NO 816, 2007

This Bye-Law provides for a bag limit of 4 fish (being either salmon or sea trout over 40 cm) from 1 March to 12 May subject to a daily bag limit of 1 fish during the period.  The Bye-law also incorporates the provisions of the existing Bye-law i.e. an overall annual bag limit of 10 fish for 2007, a daily bag limit of 3 fish from 13 May to 31 August and a daily bag limit of 1 fish from 1 September to the end of the season. The Bye-law also provides for the use of single hooks and prohibits the use of worms as bait once the specified number of fish have been caught in the specified periods.
