LOUGH OWEL AND ACALLA THE FORM TROUT FISHERIES THIS WEEK

It was a good week on Owel with plenty of action and good returns. Anglers have reported observing fish feeding well on fry late in the evening and these fish will take if covered with a fly. Lough Acalla is in form with good returns from the fishery. There was a good rise of fish on Sheelin with good sedge hatches on the lake. Those who are are fishing the lake are reporting some nice fish and anglers are encouraged to fish even during daytime. Lough O'Flynn is not fishing as well as it did over recent weeks. Water levels in the system are very high. Few enough anglers fished Ennell last week, but anglers who are prepared to stay late into the evening can get good results on sedges. Salmon fishing has stepped up a gear with good movement of fish but fish seem to be elusive and difficult to catch. TIGHT LINES!

UPPER SHANNON

LOUGH SHEELIN

There was a good rise of fish on Sheelin and good sedge hatches on the lake.  Peter O'Reilly fished with Michael Kelly on Thursday last and caught and released 9 trout on dry sedges, fish averaging 1.5lbs to 2lbs. Gene Brady L.S.T.P.A. had 4 fish on sedges ranging from 1.5lbs to 3lbs. Adrian Mc Grane L.S.T.P.A. caught and released 4 fish up to 2lbs. Eamon Connors had 2 fish averaging 2lbs on sedges. Anglers are encouraged to try the lake even during daytime.

LOUGH O'FLYNN & UPPER RIVER SUCK

Water levels remain very high and temperatures were very cool on some evening, especially over the weekend. Consequently fishing was slow over those evenings. There were six to eight anglers out on O'Flynn most days. The best returns were from Philip Mc Goldrick, Ballyhaunis. He had three fish on Thursday. Anthony Baggot had one fish over two sessions. Fish were observed rising but elusive and difficult to catch. Catch of the week went to Matt Foley. He had one fish of 3.5lbs caught on the River Suck in the Ballymoe area. He had another fish of 2.75lbs on a Deer hair sedge.

DANIEL BOY....
We got a cracking photo this week sent in of young Daniel Shaw of Collage Vale Mullingar. Young Daniel is really keeping the Shaw angling tradition on line. Daniel was fishing with dad Nickie on Lough Owel, where he landed some fine trout and
a few good Perch. Here we have Daniel pictured with one of his cracking trout from Owel. I was in with Nickie last week in Shaws hardware and he has a splendid selection of outdoor clothing. There is that much camouflage clothing around at present, the fish can't see us out on the lake.

OWEL COMPETITIONS....
Tonight Wednesday 1st August Lough Owel trout preservation Association will host the Dan Mullally Trophy. This fly fishing competition will be fished from 7pm-11pm. It's a club competition and new members are more than welcome on the night.
The weigh-in of the Dan Mullally will take place at Mullallys and the all fish weighed in must be over the 13inch limit for club competitions. Plus a four fish limit is in place. The lake has being stocked recently with some top quality brown trout and these fish should provide some rod bending action in the coming weeks. On  August 12th the club will host the Patti Doolan Perpetual Shield. More on this in the coming weeks.

GLORE- ALL SPECIES.....

Lough Glore anglers are holding their all- species competitions. Sponsored by Castlepollard Angling centre, this event should draw quite a few anglers. On the membership card the venue is the Inny River. This may change before the the competition morning as the River is quite high and very overgrown with weeds in some stretches. The competition is next Sunday August 5th and fishing is from 9am-4-30pm. Please check with Castlepollard Angling Centre before travelling Sunday morning Mob: 086-3686146.

THE JOHN MORAN MEMORIAL CUP....

The August Bank Holiday weekend is reserved every year for one of the largest Trout competitions of the season, the John Moran Memorial Cup, which is run and sponsored by Ganly’s Homevalue Hardware and also the Ganly, Monaghan and Doherty families. This will be the eighteenth year this competition has taken place and is held to remember John Moran who passed away so tragically on the lake. While the fishing competition is the main event there will also be plenty of other activities over the whole weekend to keep everybody busy.
The fishing competition, which will start at 10.30am on Sunday August 5th from Killeenmore Harbour, is open to members of invited clubs some of which are Athlone Anglers Association, Ballykeeran and Killeenmore Anglers, Camlin and District Anglers, Cashel Anglers Association, Coosan Anglers Association, Elan Angling Club, Lanesboro Pike Anglers, Portlick Anglers Association and Roscommon and District Anglers.
While standard trout fishing rules apply and both fly and troll methods can be used please remember that there will be around two hundred anglers taking part which means that in all probability it will be a large fish which wins so please let the smaller ones back unharmed if possible. The competition finishes back at Killeenmore Harbour at 6.00pm where only ticket holders will be allowed to weigh in their fish. Tickets will be issued at the start of the competition by each clubs Captain of the Day which for the Athlone Anglers Association will be Angela Sloane, normal competition entry fees will apply and competitors may only start from Killeenmore Harbour. As there are so many clubs taking part please make sure and get there early as it is going to be extremely busy.
Apart from the main fishing competition on the Sunday there are also a number of other events taking place over the weekend starting on Saturday August 4th at 2pm with the Children’s Fishing Competition followed by a barbeque. On Sunday if you don’t fancy going to the Lake for the fishing then there will be a fantastic Bingo session starting at 2.00pm and after the weigh in of the fishing competition there will be a barbeque followed by entertainment.
Monday has been designated as sports day with many events taking place for both the adults and the kids including the traditional Egg and Spoon Race, the Wheelbarrow Race, Football Competition plus many, many more events throughout the day and evening to keep everybody entertained.
The competition and all the other events are open to members and their immediate families of all the invited clubs and is one of the few occasion in the year when practically the entire local angling community get together to swap stories with old friends and renew acquaintances. All in all it promises to be a great weekend and our thanks to the Ganly, Monaghan and Doherty families for all their hard work and dedication in making this event so enjoyable for everyone and we look forward to seeing you all there.

CAMCOR RIVER BIRR

The night fly fishing on the Camcor River has been slow considering the amount of effort put in by local anglers. A few fish were caught along Palmers flats and Sandymount at dusk.

Lough Derg Native Fish Biodiversity Project

Towards the sustainable management of Lough Derg's native fish populations

Project update June 2007

The Lough Derg Native Fish Biodiversity Project is now is now into its second year and it is timely that we should have a newsletter just to give people an update on the developments so far. Its been quite exciting really and we’ve come along way from our humble beginnings! Just to recap, the Lough Derg Native Fish Biodiversity Project (Lough Derg NFB Project) was set up to answer a number of questions concerning the native fish community using the most up-to-date and sophisticated scientific techniques. Such question include;....

RIVER MULCAIR CO LIMERICK

Over the last week, lots of Salmon have been observed moving through the Mulcair and Castleconnell systems. With the presence of many anglers on the banks of the Mulcair,  the salmon have proved elusive. For some anglers the week has proven to be very successful with local angler Dermot Darcy landing three fish in the long field area of the Mulcair, the best being a grilse of 8lbs. Water levels should be favourable this week for the fly angler as water levels drop back.  Anglers are reporting a good number of Salmon showing at Plassy on the Shannon.

CONSERVATION OF SALMON AND SEA TROUT BYE-LAW NO.  814, 2006

This Bye-Law provides for an annual bag limit of 10 fish for 2007, a season bag limit of 1 fish in the period 1 Jan to 12 May, a daily bag limit of 3 fish from 13 May to 31 August and a daily bag limit of 1 fish from 1 September to the end of the season. The Bye-law also provides for the use of single hooks and prohibits the use of  worms as bait once the specified number of fish have been caught in the specified periods and revokes the existing limit Bye –law.

IMPORTANT ADDITIONAL INFORMATION FOR SALMON ANGLERS - BROWN TAGS

From May 13th, 2007 the Minister introduced a system of Brown Gill tags for certain rivers where it is considered necessary in the interests of conserving stocks to closely monitor angling quotas to ensure river based quotas are not exceeded. The River Mulcair in Co Limerick is covered by this scheme.
