TROUT ANGLING HAS HOTTED UP
THIS WEEK ON LOUGH OWEL
Trout angling has hotted
up over the past week on Lough Owel with some quality fish
caught to over 5lbs. The L.S.T.P.A. has recently launched a new
website which should keep you well informed on all the
activities of the Association. It's competition time and Michael
Flanagan keeps us updated on the local competition scene in the
Midlands and announces the upcoming events. The Athlone Anglers
Association features their angling news for Lough Ree. News is
positive on Lough Derg as we write with some good trout being
caught on the troll.
Weather has settled down over recent days
and is very pleasant as we write. The dry settled
spell is expected to continue right up to the Easter holiday weekend. Happy
angling.

ACE PERPETUAL CUP....
On the local scene it's all hands on deck at present on Owel. Last
week we covered the A.G.M. and the T.A.F.I. competition. One of
the best catches to date on Owel was recorded recently and Philip
Smith from Mullingar. He landed a super trout over 6lbs.The lake is
fishing well to the troll at present and reports of duck-fly hatch
arriving should get the trout surface feeding in the coming weeks.
Next Sunday Lough Owel anglers will hold their first trout
competition of the season. On the day the Ace Cup will be fished.
This beautiful Cup was presented to Lough Owel by the late Mr Oliver
Buckley. Fishing that day will be from 11am-6pm with weigh-in at Mullallys. This is a club trout fly-fishing competition and new
members are more that welcome on the day. The club enforce a strict
13 inch limit during competitions and the bag limit is 4-trout. Lough
Owel is under the control of the Shannon Regional Fisheries Board,
so you will also need a Shannon permit. These can be bought on line
or contact local office 044-93-48769.
HELD-OVER....
Last Wednesday night in the Greville Arms Hotel Lough Ennell anglers
held their Annual General Meeting. This was an very interesting
A.G.M. and to give it the space it deserves we will hold back the
report and photos till next weeks Angling Focus. Also Angling Focus
took a trip to Athlone last week. Here we hooked up with none other
than Athlone angler and tackle dealer Des Powell who recently turned
his angling shop into an anglers paradise. Yes Des put expenses to
the side on this venture and now Athlone has one of the best tackle
superstores in Ireland. If you are in the Athlone area over the long
weekend check out this anglers paradise at the Strand Athlone or
call Des on 086-8254141.The shop is packed with coarse, game and sea
fishing gear, which will be featured in Angling Focus next week.

THE FALLON MEMORIAL CUP TROUT
COMPETITION....

Athlone Anglers Association competition on Lough Ree - photo courtesy of
Athlone Anglers Association.
The Fallon Memorial Cup
always attracts a large turnout and last Sunday, 1st April, was no
exception and thirty boats took to the waters of Lough Ree crammed to
the gunnels with eager anglers. Anyone looking out their window that
day would have said that it was a beautiful day but the biting cold
wind from the northeast meant that everyone stayed wrapped up with
more layers than an onion.
However the thirty boats was soon reduced to twenty nine when Jimmy
O’Rourke and Jimmy Flanagan suffered from an overheating engine due to
a blocked impellor and had to be towed back to Athlone by the
Cunningham brothers. A lesson to us all, make sure your engine is in
perfect working order before heading out on to the lake as the last
thing anyone needs is to break down particularly if the lake is rough.
Philip Keogh and Keith Dowling suffered no such problem and had a
fantastic day’s fishing at their favourite secret location catching
Pike and Trout and even Perch and when the scales came down that night
in Walsh’s Bar they topped the leader board with a fantastic trout
which none of the other anglers came close to matching. They now have
two points on the Angler of Year leader board and are staking an early
claim to this year’s crown. Michael Sheriff and James Kearney did
their best to retain the cup which they had won last year, which was
their second time to win it in the five years that it has been
running, however on this occasion their efforts were only good enough
to claim second place. Third place went to a delighted Eddie O’
Donovan who only missed out on second place by just over an ounce but
was over two ounces ahead of Barney Kelly and James Greene who claimed
fourth spot. One of the Fallon family themselves managed to claim
fifth place when Owen Murphy and Rickie Fallon weighed in a lovely
trout and eagerly accepted fifth prize from father Paul.
Sincere thanks to the Fallon Family for their generous and consistent
sponsorship of this fantastic competition and to Walsh’s Bar on
Connaught Street for their excellent hospitality on the night at the
weigh in and presentation of prizes. Thanks also to Paul Fallon and
Angela Sloane who between them carried out the Captain of the Day
duties.
NEXT COMPETITION....
As next Sunday is Easter Sunday their will be no competition in order
to give everyone a chance to crack open their Easter eggs and for
those, including myself, who were off the drink for Lent a chance to
enjoy a pint or two. The following Sunday, April 15th, will see the
resumption of competitions when the competition for the Angler’s Rest
Cup will take place. This is a trout competition will take place on
Lough Ree with a 10.30am start at Gallagher’s Boat Shed and will
finish with lines up at 6pm.
FOR YOUR DIARY...
The following is the schedule of competitions that it is proposed to
hold over the next few weeks. Please note this list may change due
to unforeseen circumstances, however the details of each competition
will be published in the local newspaper, on the posters, the
Athlone.ie website and sent out to members by text message in the
week prior to each competition.

LOUGH DERRAVARAGH,
ABBOTT / TIGHTLINES TROUT COMPETITION....
Easter Sunday April 8th, Derravaragh anglers are in action. On the
day the popular Abbott / Tightlines trophies will be fished. Fishing
is from 11am to 6pm with start and finish Donore shore. There will
be plenty knocking around the Midlands over the long weekend so you
would be advised to book your boat & engine if needed in advance. At
Donore Shore Paul Smith 086-8230363 or Sally Meehan boat & engine
hire 044-93-71152. Sally is situated right next to where the Inny
River enters Lough Derravaragh and this is regarded as one of the
Hot-Spots on the lake. The competition is a club events and you are
more that welcome on the day. Once again Shannon permit is needed
