MAYFLY SEASON IMMINENT  ON LOUGH DERG

We're now back to the familiar rain after a prolonged spell of dry weather. Fishing has been mixed. The humid wet conditions forecast for the weekend will be ideal for mayfly fishing which is just starting on Lough Derg as we write. We feature information on the upcoming All Ireland trout angling match for anglers with disabilities and a youth match at Loch an Dochais Kilcormac, Co Offaly. Backward fish wins Quinnsworth cup is the headline of the recent  trout competition report on Lough Ree by Athlone Anglers Association. They also keep us up to date on other upcoming competitions scheduled for the mayfly season.  Lough Owel is fishing well presently after a recent lull. So too is Lough O'Flynn which has suddenly sprung to life. The Mayfly season is just commencing with better hatches of fly expected in the coming days and weeks ahead.  TIGHT LINES!

UPPER SHANNON

LOUGH SHEELIN

Fishing has been very quiet on Sheelin with little feedback this week. Contact Thomas Lynch L.S.T.P.A. Mobile: 087 9132033 or logon to the L.S.T.P.A website http://www.loughsheelinanglers.ie/ for information on local competitions and other upcoming news.

LOUGH O'FLYNN & UPPER RIVER SUCK

Trout fishing has suddenly sprung to life on O'Flynn. John Connolly Castlerea  and David Connolly Galway  had no problem getting their bag limit in 4 to 5 hour fishing sessions. Best flies were Bibio, Butcher, Black Pennell and dabblers. Matt Foley did well over two afternoons. Another local angler Anthony Baggot, Castlerea had great sport around the local rivers - Cloonard, Silver Island and the River Suck. He caught  mostly small fish, up to 1lb.

O'MALLEY CUP ...

The popular O'Malley Cup was fished last Sunday April 22nd and Owel Secretary Stan Mc Keown reported some nice fish were caught on the day. Conditions on the day were quite good and thirty four anglers competed in near perfect conditions. Stan tells us some good hatches of Olives are popping up on the Western side of the lake so in the coming days a trip to Owel just might produce some good trout. Last week we got the weights wrong on the Ace Cup competition. Some club scales weigh in lbs and others in kg, so hopefully this week I have it right. Top rod on Owel and the winner of the O'Malley Cup was Philip Cunningham with a good trout weighing .865kg, in second place was Lough Owel Hon-secretary Stan Mc Keown with a trout .860kg, and 3rd place was Robert Kenny with a fish .810kg with Tom Winters taking 4th place with .695kg. Presenting the prizes was Club Chairman Andy Boyle and he thanked all who supported the competition and especially the O'Malley family who are part and parcel of angling here in Westmeath. At present David O'Malley has a very good selection of Owel flies and he will give you sound advice on fishing Lough Owel. The  competition scene takes a rest on Owel for the coming week and the next club event is the Glen Owel Pike competition. The National Championships is pencilled in for Saturday June 9th. naturally we will keep you up to date on these events and the fishing on Owel in the coming weeks.

LOUGH REE

Anglers are reporting angling on Lough Ree as very slow, but are hoping that the first of the Mayfly will be seen shortly and this should improve the fishing.

BACKWARD FISH WINS QUINNSWORTH CUP....

Last Sunday the signs were good for an excellent days fishing, the wind was from the west and at the right strength, the sky was overcast and the air temperature was warm but yet again the only thing missing was the trout. There have been many theories expounded for the poor start to the fishing season but it seems that Michael Sherriff and James Kearney may have found the solution, catch the fish backwards!

The weigh in and presentation of prizes took place that evening in the Green Olive Lounge, the first time we have had a weigh in at this venue and judging by the success of the night it will not be the last. When the scales came down the winners were Michael Sherriff and James Kearney and their incredible backward fish. Normally a fish is hooked in the mouth but that’s too easy for these lads so they hooked him in the tail which meant that instead of coming in head first they brought him in tail first, backwards, and apparently the fish gives a much better fight this way. Even though there was only a few fish weighed in, or maybe it was because there was a lack of fish, the competition was very close and second place was awarded to Sean Kelly and Connor Hannon whose fish was just under an ounce lighter than the winners, this was the first time this year that last year’s anglers of the Year have won a prize so they have a little bit of catching up to do but it’s not beyond the bounds of possibility for two such dedicated fishermen. Camillus Greene on his second ever outing with the club and Christopher Grogan on his first ever outing claimed third place for their fine trout which was exactly two ounces lighter and whether this was beginners luck or not, I’m sure the lads will be back to prove that no luck was involved. Fourth Place went to Philip Keogh and Keith Dowling whose trout was again less than an ounce behind third place and just over a half ounce behind them in fifth place was Owen Murphy and Richie Fallon.
As in previous weeks there was plenty of Perch and Pike caught on the day and hopefully next week will be the same as we are taking a break from the Trout and moving onto our first Pike competition of the year and for those of you interested in all things Mayfly, there have been some sightings of the fisherman’s best friend. Some small hatches have been reported on Lough Derg while a small number were spotted on Lough Corrib on Friday and an even smaller number were spotted on Lough Ree last Sunday. Hopefully this means that the Mayfly season will start early and bring on the good trout fishing.
Our sincere thanks to Keane Moran and Eamon Cummins of the Green Olive for their generous sponsorship of this competition and for their excellent hospitality on the night and the fantastic atmosphere will ensure that we will be back again.
