SALMON FISHING SEASON ENDS ON
A VERY LIVELY NOTE ON OUR SPATE RIVERS
The Salmon fishing season ended on a
very lively note and was a lifeline to an otherwise poor
salmon fishing season. It was competition time on our Midland
lakes Owel, Ennell, Sheelin, see main report for details of
winners and upcoming events. The season continues on a number of
our midland lake fisheries until October 12th, we will be
reporting on these in due course, otherwise the season has ended
since Sept 30th, last Saturday.
Water levels are now very high following all the recent heavy
rainfall, more unsettled weather and further heavy rain is on
the way as autumn advances.

LAKELAND ANGLER TOPS ON
ENNELL....
Yes it certainly has been
another Roller Coaster week here in the
Midlands and I seem to be catching more fish
on camera than on my fishing rod. We have yet
another action packed report on the angling
scene and please bear with us as we try and
include some pics over the coming weeks. Up to
eighty anglers fished the last day on Lough
Lene with some good quality trout caught.
Lakeland anglers hosted their end of season
trout competition on Owel & Ennell with Liam Gilsenan from Multyfarnham
winning Owel and Tom Gorman hooking-up with
his best trout of the season from Ennell.
LAKELAND ANGLERS....
Last Sunday October 1st
Lakeland anglers hosted their end of season
trout competition on Lough Owel & Ennell. Once
again this popular competition proved a huge
success with some huge trout caught on the
day. Lough Owel produced some super trout the
best falling to Liam Gilsenan from
Multyfarnham. Liam is one of Westmeath's
finest fly anglers and regularly produces both
on the trout scene and the salmon scene. On
the day on Owel his fish weighed 2.928lbs. In
second place was Martin Mc Quaide with another
good trout weighing 2.518lbs. In 3rd place was
Mullingar angler Dermott Caffrey with
1.960lbs and 4th was Declan Murphy 1.880lbs.
It was great to see Declan back in the winning
enclosure on Owel and he is a class angler. On
Ennell it was Mullingar motor mechanic Tom
Gorman who powered home to win with a super
trout weighing 5.212lbs. Tom would admit
himself it's not too often he hooks-up with an
Ennell trout but when he does he does in
style. It was certainly one of the best
looking trout to come off Ennell this season
and hopefully we will see more this weekend.
John Brennan also produced a cracker from
Ennell, this beauty weighed 4.106lbs. In 3rd
place was Jimmy Stenson with 1.146lbs and 4th
Frank Stenson 1.118lbs.The presentation of
prizes were held in Caffreys Bar & Lounge
Mount St and there was some wonderful
silverware on display, plus Niall Caffrey
presented the award for the top Lakeland
angler earlier in the season on Lough Conn.
Every year Lakeland anglers have a weekend
away competition on Lough Conn and it was John
Brennan who received this magnificent Mirror.
Tom Gorman won the Peadar Caffrey Cup for the
best fish on the day and the Larry Sleator
Shield for the best trout caught during the
season by a member of Lakeland Anglers.
Weighmaster on the night were John Tyrrell and
Andy Boyle. Speaking at the presentation Andy
thanked all competitors who fished the event.
Niall Caffrey for allowing the anglers use his
premises and also sponsoring the Lough Conn
prize. Peadar Caffrey and the Sleator family
who over the years have really supported
angling here in Mullingar. Not forgetting the
ladies behind the scene Catherine Tyrrell and
Patricia Montgomery who prepared the sambos.
Also Angling Focus who over the season has
advertised and reported on competition.
UPCOMING EVENTS....
Next Sunday October 8th Lough
Ennell anglers will be in action. On the day
the Rex Beaumont Cup is the top prize. Fishing
is from 11am-7pm with start and finish
Whitebridge Bay. On the last day of the season
Lough Ennell anglers will hold an end of
season competition. This will be fished from
10-30am with weigh-in at 8pm Caffreys Bar &
Lounge. On the same day Lough Owel Trout
Preservation Association will hold a
competition once again fishing 10-30am with
weigh-in, Caffreys at 8pm. Proceeds from the
Owel competition will go towards stocking the
lake with quality trout. If you are interested
in sponsoring a prize for this event please
contact Andy Boyle Chairman L.O.T.P.A. on
087-9588900.
FINALLY....
Sadly we finish on a sad note.
As you are well aware Mullingar lost on of his
angling legends last week. Well known salmon
angler Tommy Monaghan passed away. Tommy had a
great interest in angling and often commented
on my angling reports over the years. On
behalf of Angling Focus we would like to send
our deepest sympathy to the Monaghan family.

RIVER FEALE CO KERRY
The salmon fishing season ended on Saturday
Sept 30th on a very lively note on the River
Feale. A lot of anglers were out over the
last few days in ideal angling conditions.
There were plenty of fish caught and
