MAYFLY SEASON SLOW TO COMMENCE THIS YEAR FOLLOWING A COLD SPRING

The Mayfly season has been very slow to commence this year following a cold spring. This time last year the fly was well up on Derg with Lough Ree just commencing. Not so this year. The fly is only just starting to emerge on Lough Derg but will take a few days more before the fish start to go on the fly properly. Lough Ree continues to produce the odd quality trout to 6lbs plus on the troll, no sign of the Mayfly yet. Lough Owel was the better performer with prolific hatches of olives encouraging the fish to surface feed!. Weather was generally good up to the weekend but has been unsettled since Monday with lots of rain and blustery windy conditions and local down pours as we write. On the upside temperatures are reasonable for May and expected to rise in the southerly breezes. We await the first real news of the Mayfly season - hopefully this will materialise for next weeks report. Join us then. TIGHT LINES!

UPPER SHANNON

LOUGH SHEELIN

There were  few trout caught this past week. Fly life was patchy. Best trout of 4.5lbs was caught  by L. Barkey from Monaghan. Gerry Mc Kiernan and his partner Jean Brady, L.S.T.P.A. had 10 small wild trout, all released. Michael Kelly Dublin and his angling partner, Peter O'Reilly, were also fishing in the past week, conditions again were very poor, they had no fish but did see signs of fish moving.

MID SHANNON AREA

LOUGH ENNELL

Denis Rosney, Pollagh had a fish of 1.75lbs. Tony Harton, Finea had a nice fish over 4lbs. Andy Duncan, Mullingar had a fish of 3lbs on fly. David O'Malley, Mullingar had a fish of 1.75lbs on a red tailed Peter. Jack Sleator, Mullingar had a fish of 1.5lbs.

LOUGH OWEL

Good trout fishing was reported from Owel over the last week and the big hatches of Olives attracted the attention of the fish. These hatches are expected to continue over the next two weeks and should provide good sport for the angler - prospects look promising, hopefully the weather will oblige! Michael Tyvoid, Dublin had he best reported fish of the week at 4.75lbs on Sunday April 21st. Joe Vickers, Tullamore had 11 fish over three days. Joe Kenna, Dublin had 8 fish for 2 days fishing, best fish 2.5lbs. It was won by Ruth Meddler, 8 fish were released. 40 anglers fished the Lakelands Competition, 9 fish were returned. The results were
