MAYFLY SEASON SLOW TO COMMENCE
THIS YEAR FOLLOWING A COLD SPRING
The Mayfly season has been very slow to commence
this year following a cold spring. This time last year the fly
was well up on Derg with Lough Ree just commencing. Not so this
year. The fly is only just starting to emerge on Lough Derg but
will take a few days more before the fish start to go on the fly
properly. Lough Ree continues to produce the odd quality trout
to 6lbs plus on the troll, no sign of the Mayfly yet. Lough Owel
was the better performer with prolific hatches of olives
encouraging the fish to surface feed!. Weather was generally
good up to the weekend but has been unsettled since Monday with
lots of rain and blustery windy conditions and local down pours as we write.
On the upside temperatures are reasonable for May and expected to rise in the southerly
breezes. We await the first real news of the Mayfly season -
hopefully this will materialise for
next weeks report. Join us then. TIGHT LINES!
UPPER SHANNON

LOUGH SHEELIN
There were few trout caught this past week. Fly life was
patchy. Best trout of 4.5lbs was caught by L. Barkey from
Monaghan. Gerry Mc Kiernan and his partner Jean Brady, L.S.T.P.A.
had 10 small wild trout, all released. Michael Kelly Dublin and
his angling partner, Peter O'Reilly, were also fishing in the
past week, conditions again were very poor, they had no fish but
did see signs of fish moving.

LOUGH ENNELL
Similar to Lough
Owel there were prolific hatches
of Olives on Lough Ennell and fish showed some
interest. Most anglers reported that the trout were
elusive - coming short to the fly. Denis Rosney,
Pollagh had a fish of 1.75lbs. Tony Harton, Finea had
a nice fish over 4lbs. Andy Duncan, Mullingar had a
fish of 3lbs on fly. David O'Malley, Mullingar had a
fish of 1.75lbs on a red tailed Peter. Jack Sleator,
Mullingar had a fish of 1.5lbs.

LOUGH OWEL
Good trout fishing was reported
from Owel over the last week and the big hatches of Olives attracted the attention of the
fish. These hatches are expected to continue over
the next two weeks and should provide good sport for
the angler - prospects look promising, hopefully the
weather will oblige! Michael Tyvoid, Dublin had he
best reported fish of the week at 4.75lbs on Sunday
April 21st. Joe Vickers, Tullamore had 11 fish over
three days. Joe Kenna, Dublin had 8 fish for 2 days
fishing, best fish 2.5lbs. Tony Gaffney, Dublin also
did well with 4 fish up to 2.75lbs on fly.
Martin McQuaid, Dublin had two fish for 3.5lbs.
10 anglers caught 10 fish in the Ladies National
Team practice competition. It was won by Ruth
Meddler, 8 fish were released. 40 anglers fished the Lakelands Competition, 9 fish were returned. The
results were
-
1st Place:
1st Alan Tyrrell, Mullingar
with a fish of 2.5lbs
-
2nd Place:
2nd Steve Turner, Athlone with
a fish of 2.2lbs
-
3rd Place:

PALLAS LAKE CO OFFALY
The fishery opened last Monday May 1st. A good number of anglers
converged on the shores in traditional style from early morning.
Air temperatures were a bit on the cool side early on but
improved by midday to allow for more comfortable fishing. Most anglers had fish
on the dry
fly, best G&H sedge , mainly rainbows and the occasional brown. One
good fish was lost estimated at 5lbs. John Reilly and son
achieved their bag limit.

LOUGH GLORE A.C....
This fantastic little fishery
is really holding its own in the angling
world, and recently the club hosted a very
successful trout competition. The event was
sponsored by Andrew Dowell of ADM Design &
Print Castlepollard. Well known local angler
Mick Hayden topped the day with a fine trout
weighing 2lbs 8oz. In second place was Freddie
Millar with another good trout weighing 1lbs
9oz,and third place went to Mark Donaghue with
a fish 1lbs 2oz.The junior winners were Amanda
Smith and Jordan Donaghue. The ongoing
stocking policy by Lough Glore Anglers has
insured some quality sport for trout anglers.
If you would like any more info on Glore
please contact Castlepollard Angling Centre

O'MALLEY CUP....
This popular trout fly-fishing

23rd last. It proved to be a very difficult
day to get the Owel trout moving. Still some
nice trout were recorded on the day and Top
Rod was Stephen Turned with a fish .995kg. In
second place was Anthony Nolan with a fish
.775kg, 3rd Gerry Heeslop .770kg,and 4th Tom
Gorman .770kg.
