a nice fish of over 4.5lbs.

LOUGH SHEELIN

Trout caught on Sheelin recently by Michael Kelly, Balbriggan
Lough Sheelin is fishing exceptionally well for any angler who
is venturing out. The number of boats on the lake even at
weekends still remains relatively small. Anglers are reporting
huge catches of all wild trout, no stocked fish have been
recorded for this week. The trout are in excellent condition.
Most anglers operate a catch and release policy and when fish
are being kept, its usually only one or two maximum. Again the
most successful fishing method is using a small (size 14 - 16)
brown sedge, dry fly fishing and heading for calm water.
Catches of trout were however reported using wet fly fishing
around Orangefield and also dapping.
Around 170 fish were reported to have been caught averaging
around 1.5 lbs to 2.5 lbs, most being released back. All areas
of the lake are fishing well but in particular around Goreport,
Sailors Garden, Lynch's point and around Church island. Anglers
catching big catches of trout are :Michael Kelly, LSTPA who
caught and released 9 on August 24th. John Murphy, LSTPA, Gene
Brady, Ballinagh and Thomas Lynch LSTPA.

There were big hatches of Murrough and other sedges reported last
week. Pleasure anglers are getting fish on the Murrough.
A very successful Regional and Central Fisheries Board Staff
Association trout angling competition was fished on Lough O'Flynn
on Thursday August 24th. 16 anglers took part. John Burke of the
North Western Regional Fisheries Board won with a fish of 1.580Kg.
Billy Murphy Western Regional Fisheries Board was second with a
fish of 1.190kg and Michael Callaghan Shannon Regional Fisheries
Board Chairman was third with a fish of 1.090kg. All anglers
reported a good rise of fish.

on the lake. The Dodder Anglers held a competition

fish for 10.5lbs. Brendan Murray, Mullingar had 5
fish for 7.5lbs on Monday 21st August and another 2

THE WYKES/GAFFNEY MEMORIAL CUP
The Wykes Gaffey
Memorial Cup, the penultimate trout fishing
competition of the season, was fished on Sunday 27th
August and as expected a there was a large turnout
with thirty boats taking to the water. This was a
home and away competition but as Lough Ree has
fished very well all year very few boats availed of
the opportunity to travel to other lakes and this
was proved to be the correct option as Lough Ree
served up another fantastic winner. The day itself
was almost ideal for fishing with winds from force
three to force four and overcast conditions with the
odd shower of rain thrown in for good measure.
Every method of
fishing was in use on the day but it was those great
exponents of Dapping, Dominic Conway and his son
Brian, who stole the show with a fantastic trout
weighing 4lb 9ozs and was duly awarded first prize
and the fantastic Wykes–Gaffey Memorial Cup. Second
place went to that well known fishing family
consisting of Joe, Paul and Richie Fallon for their
trout which weighed 3lb 3ozs while a trout weighing
2lb 14ozs was enough to get third place for Sean
Kelly and Connor Hannon. Further congratulations are
due to Sean and Connor as this prize ensures that
they have now achieved an unassailable lead in the
Angler of the Year competition as with only two
competitions to go they are leading by three points
and cannot be caught. Brendan Carter and David
Cunniffe brought a 2lb 13oz trout to the scales,
only one ounce lighter than Sean and Connors, and
were duly awarded fourth place while fifth place
went to the father and son duo of Tommy and Anthony
Moran when their trout weighed in four ounces
lighter at 2lb 9ozs.
The weigh in and
presentation of prizes took place in the Coosan
Tavern and we would like to thank Manager Mark
Beaumont and his staff for their excellent
hospitality on the night and also a very sincere
thank you to the Wykes and Gaffey families for their
continued and very generous sponsorship of this
competition. A big thank you also to Tommy Moran and
Eamon Cunningham who were our Captains of the Day.
THE
CONWAY-CONROY CUP
The last Trout
competition of the season will take place next
Sunday, 3rd September, for the
Conway-Conroy Cup and as this is the last one a huge
turnout is expected. This competition will be run
slightly different as their will be a catch and
release option. This means that anglers will have
the option to have their fish weighed on the lake
and released back into the water or they can bring
to their fish into the weigh in and presentation
venue for weighing that evening. Full details of the
Captains location and contact number will be given
to all the anglers on the morning of the
competition. The competition itself will start from
Gallagher’s Boat Shed at 10.30am and the weigh in
and presentation of prizes will take place that
evening in Higgins Bar on Pearse Street.

TROUT SCENE....
On the trout scene all is
quite at present and it's proving very
difficult to entice fish to the surface.
Last Sunday Lough Ennell anglers were in
action, up for grabs on the day was the
Lough Ennell Perpetual Cup. Congratulations
to Mark Dunne who topped the day with a
cracking trout weighing 1.89lbs. This was
closely followed by Frank Stenson with
1.49lbs.The club have a few big competitions
coming up in September with the O'Malley Cup
& Christy Sleator Perpetual Cup to be
fished. More on these later in the month.
Lough Owel anglers are in action this Sunday
September 3rd, up for grabs on the day is
the Clonhugh Cup, plus the Tommy McCormack
Cup for the best gross weigh of trout by an
angler during the season on Owel in
competitions. Fishing is from 11am-7pm.This
is the last Lough Owel Trout Preservation
Association Competition of the season and a
good turn out is expected. There will be end
of season competitions taking place on Owel
which we will keep you up to date on.
WORLD CASTING
CHAMPIONSHIPS....
Photo: Let the games
begin. Steve Rajeff (U.S.A.),13 times world
casting Champion and multiple world record
holder in distance & accuracy events, shares
a joke with Scott McKenzie (Scotland) world
record holder at Spey distance
casting .
Some weeks back I was at the
official launch of the Emerald World Masters &
World Casting Championships at Carton House Maynooth Co Kildare. Golfing legend Mark O'Meara
who is a very keen angler officially launched the
fly casting event. Also present was Steve Rajeff
from the U.S.A. who is 13 times World champion and
Scott McKenzie from Scotland who is the world
record holder in distance Spey casting. The 2006
fly casting championships is running from
September 2nd till September 8th. The Emerald
World Masters will take place from 2nd - 4th
September with the ICSF World Championships
running from September 5th - 8th.Teams and
individuals from 37 Nations including Ireland
will compete and the world angling trade show
including a Country fair will complement the
Championships. Maynooth is only a short distance
from Mullingar and this will be one of your best
chances to see some of the World Casting Champions
in action. At the launch Steve Rajeff & Scott
McKenzie gave a demonstration of distance casting
and it was unbelievable to see just how far a fly
line could be cast with pin point accuracy. If you
fancy checking out what the top fly-tying experts
are up to at present there is a fly tying Marquee
where experts will be demonstrating their tying
skills. This is organized by Betty Hayes who is a
member of the Irish Ladies Fly fishing team. Betty
& Husband Michael are regular visitors to
Mullingar where they fish Lough Owel. Betty told
us all categories of fly-tying will be covered
from small delicate river trout flies lake trout
and working salmon patterns, plus traditional
classic salmon flies which will be of great
interest to local salmon anglers. If you want to
know more about the fly tying end of things please
contact Betty at 086-8147706. More on casting
Championships please contact Catherine Rothwell
