PETER SEASON A NON EVENT TO
DATE ON OUR MIDLAND LAKES
It has been a non eventful week on the game
angling calendar contrary to expectations which should have seen
the Peter season get into full swing on our midland lakes.
This is likely to be attributed to the hot dry summer and higher
than normal water temperatures to date.
Fresher weather over the past few days should help to recover
the situation and allow for some better Peter and Murrough
fishing in the evenings, we'll keep you posted of improvements.
A few trout were reported caught on Sheelin
in the evening time on small dry sedges and is worth trying this
week.
The upcoming August Bank
Holiday weekend is reserved every year by Athlone
Anglers Association for one of the largest Trout competitions of
the season, the John Moran Memorial Cup. Logon next week for an
update on this and other news.
TIGHT LINES!
UPPER SHANNON

LOUGH SHEELIN
Green Peter hatches are sparse on Sheelin presently but
other smaller sedges are hatching and a few anglers did have
some nice evening sport fishing small dry sedge patterns. Gene
Brady LSTPA had a trout of 2.5lbs on dry sedge. On Monday July
31st John Murphy LSTPA and friend Dave Mortell from the UK
caught 5 trout between them, all on a dry size 12 sedge, best
3lbs, all were released. On Tuesday August 1st John had two
further fish averaging 2lbs. Angling guests of Innyside House
Finea Mr Moroney from Ennis and friend had 4 fish dry fly
fishing, all in the Bog Bay Goreport areas of the lake. Michael
Kelly LSTPA from Balbriggan reported 4 fish, all were
released. Anglers could do well this week evening fishing with a
range of smaller sedge fly patterns.

LOUGH ENNELL
Fishing
has been very slow. The recent fresher weather
should have a beneficial effect and see an improvement
this week. Conor Lynch, Tullamore had a fish of 2.5lbs
on a Peter. Two Tipperary anglers had 2 fish which
were the only catch returns reported to the ShRFB
angling section this week.

LOUGH OWEL
There's very little happening on
Owel probably due to the high water temperatures.
The fresher weather at present should improve the
situation. L.O.T.P.A held the Pattie Doolan memorial
cup trout competition on Wednesday evening. 77
anglers caught 1 fish. Due to the poor result the
competition will be rerun on Wednesday 2nd
August - more on this next week.

THE JOHN
MORAN MEMORIAL CUP
The August Bank
Holiday weekend is reserved every year for one of
the largest Trout competitions of the season, the
John Moran Memorial Cup, which is run and sponsored
by Ganly’s Homevalue Hardware and also the Ganly,
Monaghan and Doherty families. This will be the
seventeenth year this competition has taken place
and is held to remember John Moran who passed away
so tragically on the lake. While the fishing
competition is the main event there will also be
plenty of other activities over the whole weekend to
keep everybody busy.
The fishing
competition, which will start at 10.30am on Sunday
August 6th from Killeenmore Harbour, is open to
members of the following clubs Athlone Anglers
Association, Ballykeeran and Killeenmore Anglers,
Camlin and District Anglers, Cashel Anglers
Association, Coosan Anglers Association, Elan
Angling Club, Lanesboro Pike Anglers, Portlick
Anglers Association and Roscommon and District
Anglers. Standard trout fishing rules apply and both
fly and troll methods can be used. The competition
finishes back at Killeenmore Harbour at 6.00pm where
only ticket holders will be allowed to weigh in
their fish. Tickets will be issued at the start of
the competition by each clubs Captain of the Day

taking part please make sure and get there early as
it is going to be extremely busy.
Apart from the
main fishing competition on the Sunday there are
also a number of other events taking place over the
weekend starting on Saturday August 5th
at 2pm with the Children’s Fishing Competition for
which the weigh in and presentation will take place
at 6.00pm. On Sunday if you don’t fancy going to the
Lake for the fishing then there will be a fantastic
Bingo session starting at 2.00pm and after the weigh
in of the fishing competition there will be a
barbeque followed by entertainment which this year
is provided by the well known band Mercury and
starts at approximately 8.30pm.
Monday has been
designated as sports day with many events taking
place for both the adults and the kids including the
traditional Egg and Spoon Race, the Wheelbarrow
Race, Football Competition plus many, many more
events throughout the day and evening to keep
everybody entertained.
The competition
and all the other events are open to members and
their immediate families of all the above clubs and
is one of the few occasion in the year when
practically the entire local angling community get
together to swap stories with old friends and renew
acquaintances. All in all it promises to be a great
weekend and our thanks to the Ganly, Monaghan and
Doherty families for all their hard work and
dedication in making this event so enjoyable for
everyone and we look forward to seeing you all
there.

NO TROUT ABOUT....
The annual peter season is very
slow at present and it's proving very difficult
to get trout to surface feed. The popular Patti
Doolan Shield as normal drew a huge turnout of
anglers but unfortunately the trout failed to
rise to this occasion. Retired Garda member Pat
Brady proved a force to be reckoned with and
produced the winning fish. Tonight Wednesday 2nd
August the Dan Mullally Shield will be fished.
Once again fishing 7pm-11pm with weigh-in at
Mullallys. Hopefully the change in the weather
this week will improve the fishing and we will
see some good Owel trout on the move.
