LOUGH REE PROVING THE BEST PERFORMER AGAIN THIS WEEK WITH QUALITY FISHING REPORTED IN LOCAL COMPETITIONS

It was a wet and often blustery week with difficult angling conditions. Once again there's little fishing activity reported from our midland lakes around Mullingar and Sheelin due to the poor weather. The competition season starts soon on our midland lakes and we will be announcing and publishing results as events take place.  Trout angling is expected to pick up by Easter week, hopefully the weather will oblige! Lough Ree once again proved the best performer with quality trout fishing in local competitions. One of the highlights this week was a specimen sized trout of 15lbs recently caught on the Shannon near Banagher - we hope to have a photo and further details for our next update. Salmon fishing stepped up a gear on the River Feale with high water moving in a fresh run of spring fish. Anglers reported good sport on the dropping floods. We have received news of the new draft Salmon & Seatrout Conservation Bye Law and updated tagging scheme S.I., which we have published for your information - see links in our main report.   TIGHT LINES!

UPPER SHANNON

LOUGH SHEELIN

There's very little pleasure trout angling being reported on Lough Sheelin presently. A few fly are starting to emerge during the milder interludes in sheltered bays. The Ulster competition is scheduled to be fished on the lake on Saturday April 22nd. More on this in due course.

LOUGH O'FLYNN & UPPER RIVER SUCK

There has been little or no angling activity reported yet on Lough O'Flynn. It's generally mid April - May onwards that fishing slowly picks up on this fishery.

THE ANGLERS REST CUP

The competition for the Anglers Rest Cup took place on Sunday 2nd April and was a home and away competition for trout. The away start was from the old railway station where Sean Kelly was Captain and the home start was as usual from Gallagher’s Boat Shed where Angela Sloane was Captain and at both locations the main topic of conversation was the very windy conditions and how it would affect the fishing. And affect the fishing it did as the water was very rough all day but despite this there was a fantastic catch of fish brought to the scales where the winning fish will probably be the largest fish caught this year.

With the scales due down at 8.30pm in the Fiddler’s pub Richard Fallon and Owen Murphy were taking no chances and were first up to weigh their fish which came in at a fantastic 6lb 13ozs, a real whopper. What makes it all the more astounding is that this was Owens, who is a farrier by trade, second ever day out fishing, he obviously had his lucky horseshoes in the boat with him. The fish was caught in Hudson Bay on our own Lough Ree which just goes to show that there is no need to travel miles up the lake looking for the big fish, they are right here on our own doorstep. With the Lough Ree monster weighed in there was still plenty of excitement as there was a lot of fish around the 2.5lb to 3lb mark vying for the other places but it was Pat and Geraldine Rohan along with Eamon Wykes who claimed second place with a fine trout weighing 3lbs 2ozs and only three ounces behind in third place were Connor Hannon and Sean Kelly whose fish weighed 2lb 15ozs. Fourth place went to the father and son duo of Michael and Stephen Conway for a fish weighing 2lb 8ozs with brothers Tom and Eamon Cunningham 2ozs further behind with a fish weighing 2lb 6ozs.

Sincere thanks to Tracy Thompson of Fiddlers Bar for her generous sponsorship of this competition and also for the great hospitality at the weigh in and presentation of prizes that evening. Thanks also to Angela Sloane and Sean Kelly who were the exemplary Captains’ of the Day.

THE TESCO CUP

After all the excitement of the Anglers Rest Cup the Tesco Cup has a lot to live up to but it is sure to attract a big entry so get there early and make sure to bring the right change for the entry fee and not the usual €50 notes. The competition will be for trout and is the last competition for trout before we start fishing for Pike and will start on Sunday 9th April at 10.30am from Gallagher’s Boat Shed. The Captain of the Day will be Eamon Cunningham. We would like to thank Tesco for their continued and generous support in sponsoring this competition.

ENNELL A.G.M. ...

On Wednesday Night Lough Ennell trout Preservation Association held their A.G.M. in the Greville Arms Hotel. The meeting was opened by Dr.T.W. Waldron (Chairman L.E.T.P.A.) who paid glowing tributes to former Lough Ennell Trout Preservation Association President Sean Downes who sadly passed away some time back. Also other members of the association who lost loved ones in recent time were The Duncan family on Ray Duncan's death, and the Gerathy family on the loss of their Son Martin "Mo" Gerathy. At this stage a minutes silence was held for these Midland Anglers. On from this Michael Murphy read out the  minutes of last years General meeting. The minutes were recorded last year by John Brennan (Assistant Sec) as Michael was unable to attend last year A.G.M. On from this was the Hon. Secretary report. Michael Murphy gave a detailed account of fishing during 2005. Unfortunately trout fishing was very poor all during the season. During the duck-fly hatches weather conditions were against anglers with strong & very cold winds. The Mayfly season was poor with very few hatches. There was quite a number of Welshman's Button showing on Ennell in 2005 but the trout never got going on them for some reason. Green Peter fishing produced some good trout, but it was a case of being in the right place at the right time during the hatches. End of season was no better, but it was noticed a lot of young trout showed as the season ended on October 12th. Michael thanks Jim Roche and his fellow Whitebridge Bay committee for sorting out berths. Also John Tyrrell & David O'Malley were thanked for collecting membership during 2005. Finally he thanked the ShRFB and the Greville Arms Hotel and all who sponsored competitions during 2005. Michael Murphy stood down as Secretary a position he has held for the past thirteen years. The meeting thanked Mick for all his hard and devoted work over the thirteen years. Next up was Tom Duffy (Treasurer L.E.T.P.A.) Tom gave a detailed account of finances with L.E.T.P.A. and announced he will not be running for re-election in 2006.Tom thanked all members for their support over the years and especially Patricia Murphy for all the help. Once again the meeting showed their appreciation for Tom and thanked him for serving as Treasurer. Next up was competition captain John Tyrrell who once again thanked all who sponsored and supported competition during 2005 on Ennell. Unfortunately trout catches were very low during events, and hopefully this coming season we will see some improvement in trout events. Officers for the coming season are as follows, President Mickie Tyrrell, Chairman Dr Billy Waldron, Hon Secretary Harry Lynch, Treasurer Michael Murphy, Competition Captain John Tyrrell. Also on the night local angler Jack Sleator was presented with his Irish Green Blazer. Jack will be representing Ireland in the Spring International later this season.

LOUGH OWEL TROUT...

Slowly but surely trout fishing is starting to pick up on Owel. Anglers are scarce on Owel at the moment due to the cold spell of weather. Mind you Marty Smith landed a cracking 5lbs Owel trout last Saturday while fishing with Top International Irish fly Angler Mick Mc Cormack. Next Sunday Lough Owel Trout Preservation Association will hold the Ace Cup which was presented to the club by the late Mr Oliver Buckley. Fishing is from 11am-6pm with weigh-in Mullallys. The size limit for L.O.T.P.A. competitions is 13 inches, and this is a club competition. New members more than welcome on the morning.

LOWER SHANNON AREA

ShRFB reports  for the RIVER FERGUS Co Clare,  Lower Shannon and CASTLECONNELL SALMON FISHERY

No report received.

ShRFB reports for the RIVER FEALE CO KERRY

There was plenty of rainfall over the week which provided good angling conditions for spring salmon fishing on the River Feale. A huge flood on Tuesday March 28th brought in a run of fish and some good sport was had. 11 salmon were officially returned for the week. At time of writing conditions are described as good for spinning with good fly water expected for a few days to come. Anglers had some lovely double figure fish. Joe Galvin Dublin had the best reported fish of the week at 12lbs. A couple of 11 pounders were landed. Dick Galvin had an 11lb fish on Wednesday March 29th and another of 9lbs on Friday.  Liam Ryan Tralee had a fish of 11lbs on Friday. Other lucky anglers included Jack Murphy Abbeyfeale, Stephen Dowling, Ballylongford, and Local Listowel anglers Pete SugrueSean Gleeson, Danny Shine and Danny Moloney. More rain is forecast for the end of the week - we'll keep you posted on what materialises.
