QUALITY WILD BROWN TROUT TO SPECIMEN SIZE REPORTED FROM LOUGH  SHEELIN LAST WEEK

Weather is variable but quite pleasant at times also,  this was especially so on Sunday. Sheelin was the better performer this week with some lovely wild trout returned in local competitions and included a specimen sized fish of 10lbs caught and released by an angler from Slane. Quite good angling conditions are expected up to the May bank holiday weekend which should see more pleasure angling taking place and hopefully lots of fish caught. We await the Mayfly season which is expected to commence very soon - more on this later!   TIGHT LINES!

UPPER SHANNON

LOUGH SHEELIN

There were some good trout recorded on Sheelin last week including a specimen fish of 10lbs caught and released by Mark Carolan, Slane Anglers. Owen McFadden, Kells Anglers had a  trout - 2.75lbs.  E. O'Toole - Castlepollard had 2 fish - 3.75lbs, 1.75lbs. Noel Lynch, Cavan Anglers caught and released 1 fish. M. Kelly - Dublin Anglers caught and released 6 fish in the past fortnight. Anglers have reported catching and releasing quite a number of small fish. Overall pleasure trout angling has been very slow in mixed weather conditions. Fly life has been very scarce up to the past week with duck flies now beginning to appear in small numbers. Milder weather at time of writing should improve angling prospects.

MID SHANNON AREA

LOUGH ENNELL

There's very little angling activity reported from  Ennell so far. However, those that are fishing have caught some nice fish. At the moment trolling seems to be the better method but as the Olive hatch improves this should change in favour of the fly angler very soon. Andy Duncan, Mullingar had a fish of 3lbs on duckfly. Jim & Dennis Rosney, Tullamore had a 2lb fish. Philip Smith, Mullingar had a fish of 2.5lbs. Declan Delaney, Ballycumber had a fish of 3lbs on Monday April 17th and another two trout for 4lbs on Sunday April 23rd.

For updates contact Pat Mc Donnell, Fisheries Officer  Shannon Regional Fisheries Board Mullingar  Office Tel: 044 48769 mornings

LOUGH OWEL

Similar to Ennell, there was little angling activity on Owel over  the last week. As the Olives start to appear fishing should improve. The Lakeland anglers are holding a competition next Sunday 30th April from 11am to 6pm and entries will be taken on the shoreline at Tullaghan and Mullays. A few fish were returned by pleasure anglers to weekending Sunday April 23rd. James Fagan, Mallow had 3 fish for 4lbs on fly. Simon York, Moate had 2 fish for 3lbs. Joe Kenna, Dublin had a two pounder on fly.

LOUGH DERRAVARAGH

DERRAVARAGH A.C...

On Easter Sunday Lough Derravaragh Angling Association hosted the Abbott/Tight Lines Trophy competition. This popular fly-fishing event was won by local angler Liam Gilsenan with a trout weighing 2lbs-8oz. At the moment Lough Derravaragh members are working on an ongoing project, concentrating on their three  major feeding streams on the southern end of the lake. With the expert help of the Shannon Regional Fisheries Board, the club are developing these streams as nurseries for young trout and as they mature they will drop back into the lake. At present the club are very concerned about the use of fast powered watercraft on Derravaragh. The lake is primarily a mixed stocked fishery which attracts visiting and local anglers. In 2005 alone the lake produced 11specimen fish which was recorded in the Irish Specimen Report, all these fish were returned alive.
