TROUT FISHING PICKS UP SIGNIFICANTLY ON OUR MIDLAND LAKE FISHERIES

It was a mixed week weatherwise with pleasantly warm temperatures and often dull cloudy skies up to recent days, good conditions for trout angling generally. Trout fishing has picked up with good results reported in the Kineavy Cup trout competition on Lough Ree and very good fishing was had in the Clonhugh Cup competition fished on Lough Owel. Ennell produced a few fish also. Salmon fishing is presently very quiet with little to report - water is needed to freshen up the rivers and encourage a move of fish. Heavy rainfall expected over the next couple of days should provide the lifeline needed for some late summer fishing. Let's hope so.  TIGHT LINES!

MID SHANNON AREA

LOUGH ENNELL

There were lots of smaller fish coming to the fly, mainly sedge imitations and some bigger fish moving to the buzzer at night.  Small silverhorn sedges, Daddies and some Buzzers are still hatching. Best Locations  were the southern end of lake. Ennell needs an inch or two of rain to liven things up and as heavy rain is forecast towards the end of the week this could just be the recipe. Frank Oaks, Mullingar had 2 fish, best 3lbs evening fishing the buzzer. Maurice Cooney, Tullamore  had 3 fish to 3lbs. Paul O'Connor, Newbridge  had a fish of 3lbs and Paddy Duffy, Dangan had a fish of 2.75lbs.

LOUGH OWEL

Anglers are reporting plenty of action on Owel over the past week especially to the Daddys. The Clonhugh Cup was fished on Sunday 4th September and some good bags of trout were returned with 60 fish weighed in for 38 anglers. With rain forecast towards the end of the week fishing should remain good. Best flies were Daddy's, Green Peters, Murroughs and Invictas.  Best methods were wet flies and dapping. Brendan Kelly, Wicklow had 3 fish for 4.5lbs. Michael Tyvoid, Dublin had 4 trout for 6lbs. Barry Lenihan, Mullingar had 2 fish for 3lbs. Ray Heffernan had a fish of 2.5lbs on a Black Pennell. Jimmey Heaslip, Dublin had two nice fish, best 3lbs. The Clonhugh Cup competition was fish and is reported in detail in Micheal Flanagan's report below.

LOUGH REE

Very few anglers fished Ree during the week though any anglers who were out on the lake are meeting fish, especially with a dapped daddy. Wet and dry flies are working for the non dappers. Three local clubs ran competitions on Sunday last and best fish of the day went to Tony Doolin, Athlone with a fine fish of 5lbs 10ozs caught on the troll. A lot of anglers reported plenty of smaller fish moving and it is hoped that fishing will improve with heavy rain forecast for the end of the week. Flies that are working well include Daddys, Welshman's button and small sedges. Martin Mc Caffrey Athlone and friend had 4 fish best 2.5lbs on wet fly and dapping. Padraig Hanniffy, Athlone  had 4 trout for 3 days, 3of 2lbs and one fish of 3lbs. Tommy Kelly, Athlone had a fish of 3.5lbs. John Whitelaw, Mullingar  had 2 trout, 2lbs and 3lbs on the Welshman's button. Newtowncashel A.C competition was held on Sunday 4th Sept. 20 boats caught 5 fish. Eddie Coffey, Newtown Cashel won with a fish of 1lb 14ozs.

 PLENTY OF TROUT ABOUT.....

Well here we are and the month of September has started off really well as far as trout fishing is concerned, mind you there is not too long left in the 2005 trout season. Lough Lene will close on September 30th and the remaining lakes & rivers around Mullingar on October 12th. Once again we have a action packed angling report this week, plus some nice photos of super trout caught on Lough Owel & Lough Lene..

CLONHUGH CUP .....

The Clonhugh Cup was fished on Lough Owel last Sunday. This trout fly-fishing competition hosted by L.O.T.P.A.  drew a large turn out of anglers from all across Leinster. Conditions on the day were quite good although it did get a bit bright from time to time. A nice steady breeze kept boats drifting along nicely and some good bags of trout were caught on the day. Fly life was at a minimum with very few Olives. There was a nice lot of Daddylonglegs being blown out onto the lake surface and if you were in the right place with the right fly you were in business. Fishing was from 11am-7pm with weigh-in at Mullallys, and it took some time to weigh all the trout caught. On the day well known Mullingar angler Barry Lenihan from Lynn Heights came out Top Rod with a super Lough Owel trout weighing 1.845Kg (4lbs 1oz). In second place was Athlone angler Stephen Turner with another cracking trout weighing 1.395kg, third place was Martin McGorian (Dublin) 1.010kg , and fourth was another local angler Peter Scally with a trout .945kg. Lough Owel Chairman Brendan Murray thanked all anglers for competing in the Clonhugh Cup and as the norm after this event there was plenty of food and light & strong refreshments for all us lucky anglers.

TOMMY MC CORMACK CUP .....

This Cup was also up for grabs last Sunday on Lough Owel, its for the heaviest gross weight of trout caught during L.O.T.P.A. 2005 competitions. Going into the final competition I was leading the field by a very narrow margin, one fish to be precise. As it turned out I had a bit of luck on the day and hooked up with six nice trout on the day. My success was all due to the fact that when the Daddylonglegs appeared on the surface I quickly put some artificial Daddies on my cast, and sure enough the trout obliged. Another fly which proved its metal on the day was a flashy Dabbler which imitated Sticklebacks which the trout were also feeding on. Having won the Tommy McCormack last year this makes me the fifth angler to put his name on it twice, no angler has won it three times (yet). The first Angler to win it twice was Mick Devanney 1988-90, then you had Noel Shields 1995-99, then Alan Tyrrell 1997-98, next Mick McCormack 1996-2000,and now yours truly 2004-05.

DALY-GIBSON COMPETITION....

Lough Derravaragh anglers are in action next Sunday. Up for grabs on the day are the the Daly & Gibson Trophies. This is a trout fly-fishing competition fishing from 11am-7pm start and finish Donore Shore. More info on this event contact Jimmy Nally on 044-71361-Boat & Engine Hire Paul Smith 044-71500.

ATHLONE ANGLERS ASSOCIATION NEWS

KENEAVY MEMORIAL CUP....

This competition was fished on Sunday 4th September and the balmy south-easterly wind made ideal conditions for fishing and this was reflected in the fine catch of fish brought to the scales. As this was the second last competition of the year it attracted a large entry with thirty boats taking to the water and with so many anglers taking part it was always going to take something special to finish at the top of the winners sheet. That something special was brought to the scales by Maureen and Tony Doolan when they weighed in a fish at 5lbs 3ozs to win the competition by almost 2lbs over their nearest competitor. That second place prize went to well known brothers Joe and Paul Fallon whose fish weighed 2lb 15.5ozs while only .5oz further back in third place was father and son duo of Michael and Stephen Conway and their fish weighed in at 2lb 15ozs. The battle for fourth and fifth was equally close with only 5ozs separating them, fourth place went to Richie Fallon and Tommy Hyland for a fish weighing 2lb 5ozs while fifth place went to husband and wife team of Tommy and Noreen Conway when their fish weighed in at 2lb.

The weigh in and presentation of prizes was held that evening in Potter’s Bar and our thanks to Michael and Sandra Costello, and their staff Eamon Cummins and Declan Dockery, for their hospitality on the evening and to Brenda McMonagle who entertained us all late into the evening. Sincere thanks to Patricia and James Greene and Family for their generous and continued sponsorship of this competition without which this competition would not be possible. Thanks also to Pat Rohan and Eamon Cunningham who between them carried out the Captain of the Day Duties. And finally Athlone Anglers would like to wish all the best to Johnny and Bernie Greene whose new farming venture in Cam gets under way this week when the hens and the ducks arrive on the farm.

CONROY/CONWAY CUP...

The competition for the Conroy/Conway Cup will take place on Sunday 11th September and will start from Gallagher’s Boat Shed at 10.30am.This will be the last Athlone Anglers Association competition this year so a large turnout is expected again for this competition. The weigh in and presentation of prizes will take place that evening in Higgins’s Bar on Pearse Street. Karl Unwin will be our Captain of the Day.

ANNUAL PRESENTATION MEETING.....

The Annual Presentation Evening will take place on Friday 2nd December and will be held in the newly revamped Loft in the Palace Bar. There will be plenty of prizes on the night and Brenda Mc Monagle will provide the entertainment, the tickets for this night out will be on sale shortly through the committee members and all are welcome.

Local ShRFB Fishery Officer reports for the  RIVER MAIGUE at Castleroberts Fishery

A good stocking of pre-smolt fish went into the Maigue Catchment area on September 1st which should help in building stocks of returning salmon into the fishery in the future. A few trout anglers are getting some evening fishing, mainly on sedge flies. Salmon angling is very slow - no news.
