LOUGH ENNELL

Catch of the year so far, from Ennell must be Alan Tyrrells 5lbs 2oz full finned Rainbow trout caught on a red tailed Peter. How this magnificent fish was present in Ennell, which is a wild brown trout fishery, is unknown, but this can happen on occasion. There is very little fly life to bring fish up. A few good fish were landed. Tosh Grimes, Mullingar had 3 fish of 4.75lbs, 3.5lbs and 2.75lbs. Conor Lynch, Clara had a 3lb trout on a Peter. Alan Molloy, Mullingar had 3 fish, returned 2. L.E.T.P.A held the Christy Sleator Cup trout competition on Sunday 25th September. 32 anglers fished with 6 anglers weighing in 7 fish. (See M Flanagan's column)

Anglers are reporting that fishing is very slow on Ree and that any fish that are caught on the fly are in very shallow water. Ian Kelly, Mullingar had 3 trout on fly, best 5lbs and 4.5lbs. Hughie Reed, Athlone had 1 fish of 2.4lbs. John McGeehan, Declan Breheny, John Keogh and Jimmy Duffy were also in the action.

MULLINGAR  ANGLERS PROVE THEIR METAL IN BIG COMPETITIONS ....

Yes it was a great weekend for Mullingar anglers both on the trout & pike angling scene. On Saturday last Lough Owel Chairman Brendan Murray won the Leinster National Qualifier fished  on Lough Owel, and on Sunday my angling pal Con Hope made a little bit of angling History by winning the first open Boat pike competition hosted by The Irish Federation of Pike Angling Clubs. This event was held on Lough Sheelin - see pike report.

MURRAY KEEPS HIS COOL ON OWEL....

The Leinster National Qualifier was fished last Saturday on Lough Owel. Up for grabs on the day was forty places for the 2006 National Final. A total of one hundred and nine anglers competed in this years Leinster with sixty eight anglers catching one hundred and sixty three trout. The total weight of trout weighed-in was 207lbs15.8oz. Conditions on the day were quite good but the wind did get a bit squally from time to time, plus we had the added bonus of heavy rain for the weigh-in at 6.30pm. I had the pleasure of fishing with Multyfarnham angling legend Liam Gilsenan and we managed five trout between us with Liam getting three nice fish on a Olive type fly. Top Rod on the day was Brendan Murray with eight trout weighing 10lbs-0.4oz,and in second place was another top Mullingar angler Andy Duncan with seven trout weighing 9lbs-2.6oz,  third was Mark O Regan of Trim & Athboy anglers. Mark had six trout weighing 8lbs-3.3oz.The presentation of prizes were held at Tullaghan and Dr Billy Waldron Leinster Chairman thanked all anglers who competed in this years Qualifier, and wished those who qualified all the best in next years National Championships.

SLEATOR CUP HEADS FOR TULLAMORE....

Last Sunday Lough Ennell Trout Preservation Association hosted the Christy Sleator Perpetual Cup. This trout  fly-fishing competition produced some super Ennell trout on the day. Anglers reported meeting plenty of fish all over the lake on Sunday and it was Tullamore angler Conor Lynch who topped the day with a cracking trout weighing 3.37lbs, in second place was Tommy Winters 3.02lbs, and third was Brendan Murray with a trout 2.9lbs. Mick Dalton finished 4th with a trout 2.10lbs. As you can see some cracking Trout are coming off Lough Ennell at present but time is running out as the season will close on October 12th.

LAKELAND ANGLERS END OF SEASON COMPETITION....

On Sunday next local angling club Lakeland Anglers will hold their end of season competition. This will be fished on Lough Ennell, Owel, and Derravaragh. Fishing is from 11am with weigh-in  Caffreys Bar & Lounge Mount Street  at 8pm sharp. As in previous seasons a good turn out of anglers are expected to compete in this competition with prizes for Owel, Ennell, and Derravaragh up for grabs. Usual points of entry on the Morning of competition.

"FINALLY" SOMETHING TO LOOK FORWARD TO....

Lately with so much competition news making the headlines we have lost out on some picture space. Well I have twisted the Editors Arm once again. When the competition scene gets a little quiet we hope to feature some of you fine "Specimen Anglers" in a type of "Anglers Gallery".

CONROY/CONWAY CUP ....

The last competition of the year the Conroy/Conway Cup was held on Sunday 25th September and as it was the season finale there was a good turnout. With weather conditions almost ideal for fishing there was plenty of fish brought to the Captains for weighing and as this was a catch and release competition all fish were released back into the lake unharmed. The winning fish was caught by brothers Thomas and Patrick Killian and weighed in at 3lb 11ozs, a fine fish by any standard.

Second place went to father and son Tommy and Anthony Moran when there fish weighed 2lb 11ozs while third place went to the husband and wife team of Tommy and Noreen Conway whose fish weighed 2lb 6ozs. Kames Kearney took fourth place for his fish that weighed 2lb 3ozs.

The presentation of prizes took place that evening in Higgins’s Bar on Pearse Street and we would like to thank all concerned for their hospitality on the evening. Thanks also to the Conroy and Conway families who sponsor this event each year and to Karl Unwin and Pat Rohan who carried out the Captain of the Day duties.

ANNUAL PRESENTATION EVENING ....

As the Conroy/Conway Cup was the last competition of the season the next Athlone Anglers Association event will be the Annual Presentation Evening. The will take place in the newly revamped Loft in the Palace Bar and along with the entertainment there will be a Christmas Buffet meal. The event itself will take place on Friday 2nd December and tickets will be going on sale shortly through the committee members.

 LOWER SHANNON AREA

ShRFB reports for the RIVER FEALE CO KERRY

Low water conditions for the week saw only a few anglers out. A lot of rain fell on Saturday and there was a good flood on Sunday morning  but was very coloured at first and very slow to clear during the day. A good few anglers tried their luck but fish were not inclined to take in the coloured water. Paul O Sullivan Listowel had a nice fresh fish of 9lbs on fly on Thursday 22nd September, followed by another fish on Friday. Walter Doyle, Tralee had a nine pounder also on Friday. Dave Wrenn, Newcastlewest had a fish of 8lbs on Sunday. Friday next September 30th marks the end of the 2005 season on the River Feale.
