THE LONG COLD SPELL IS NOW REPLACED WITH MUCH MILDER SPRING LIKE WEATHER

The recent long cold dry spell of weather has come to an end and we are now under the influence of the more normal Atlantic westerlies with a corresponding rise in air temperature and of course a return to rain which is now badly needed to freshen up our waters. The trout angling season opens on Lough Derg tomorrow St Patrick's Day March 17th - we'll keep you up to date on any action in our next report.  Prospects look very promising generally and we expect a significant increase in angling activity on St Patrick's Day and over the weekend as temperatures are expected to reach the high teens celcius. Spring salmon fishing appears to be in a lull at present with no new reports of fish caught this week. TIGHT LINES!

UPPER SHANNON

LOUGH SHEELIN

There was little angling activity reported for the week. Unfavourable weather conditions was the limiting factor for many anglers, prospects are much better at time of writing as the weather warms up.

For updates contact Mr Sean Gurhy, Assistant Fisheries Inspector Lough Sheelin Tel: 049 4336144

LOUGH O'FLYNN & UPPER RIVER SUCK

Bernard Mannion and his daughter Julia fished the Hares Ear and had 7 trout on the Upper River Suck last week.

MID SHANNON AREA

LOUGH ENNELL

Very few anglers fished on Lough Ennell due to the difficult weather conditions. The first recorded fish of  the season was caught by local Mullingar angler Andy Boyle. As weather conditions are set to improve for the coming week, St. Patrick's day should see an increase in the number of anglers fishing the lake.

For updates contact Pat Mc Donnell, Fishery Officer  Shannon Regional Fisheries Board Mullingar  Office Tel: 044 48769

LOUGH OWEL

The continuing cold weather took its toll on angling returns for Lough Owel but with weather conditions set to improve as the week progresses it is hoped that returns will show a corresponding improvement also. A few early Duckfly are present and with better weather on the way, things are looking up - lets hope the mild weather holds out. Tight Lines!

For updates contact Pat Mc Donnell, Fishery Officer  Shannon Regional Fisheries Board Mullingar  Office Tel: 044 48769

LOUGH REE

Anglers fishing Lough Ree are meeting a few fish but weather conditions are far from ideal but with milder weather forecast angling should improve.

For updates contact Pat Mc Donnell, Fishery Officer  Shannon Regional Fisheries Board Mullingar  Office Tel: 044 48769

FANCY TYING THAT KILLER FLY FOR THE COMING TROUT & SALMON SEASON...

Over the years generations of anglers have tied their own special killer flies for the particular river or lake which they fish on. Here in the Midlands we have some exceptional Fly-Tying anglers such as Liam Gilsenan, Mick McCormack, Ian Kelly, Johnny O Malley, Christy Sleator, Mick Healy. The list is endless and over the seasons these anglers produce killer flies that catch trout and salmon. Now we must not forget the pike anglers who are tying a variety of Lures which are catching cracking pike on our lakes and rivers. In the near future I am going to spend a day with Multyfarnham angler Pat Weir who is  very keen on Fishing for pike with Flies. Now to get back to tying that killer fly, next Tuesday night 22nd March in Weirs Bar & Lounge Multyfarnham there is a introduction night and demonstration in the art of  Fly-Tying will take place. All are welcome and the night starts at 8-30. For more info contact Pat Weir Tel: 044-71111.

LOUGH OWEL....

Last week a fish survey on Lough Owel was carried out by the Shannon Regional Fishery Board, the purpose of the survey was to establish what stock of fish was in the lake be it coarse or game. The last survey of Lough Owel was back in 1987 according to Dermot Broughan of the ShRFB and the initial findings from the 2005 survey look promising for Lough Owel. Naturally it will be some time before all the results are gathered from the lake survey, but Dermot stated they found a good head of trout which included a high number of young wild fish. More on the Lough Owel survey and the Lough Owel Trout Preservation Association A.G.M next week. In the meantime Lough Owel fished quiet well last weekend with some good trout caught. The lake got a injection of stocked trout which seem to fire up the natural and over wintered stockies from last year. Nickie Shaw of "Shaws Hardware" had a nice trout drifting across Kilpatrick Point, and I managed my first few trout of the season fly-fishing on Lough Owel last Friday. Finally before we leave Lough Owel it was good to see that work has started on the roof of the new Angling Centre at Tullaghan, hopefully it will be finished by the end of the trout season.

LOUGH GLORE....

Lough Glore anglers are holding the Eugene O' Neill trout competition next Sunday 20th March, this is a club competition,  fishing is from 9am-5pm. (all methods). Membership is available on the day, Senior- €40.00, O.A.P's  €20.00 and juniors are €10.00. For more info contact Castlepollard Angling Centre Tel:  044-61852.

LOUGH DERRAVARAGH

No fishing reports from Derravaragh yet.

For updates contact Pat Mc Donnell, Fishery Officer  Shannon Regional Fisheries Board Mullingar  Office Tel: 044 48769

LOWER SHANNON AREA

ShRFB reports for the RIVER FEALE CO KERRY

There was no account of any salmon for the week due to the low water levels with only a few anglers trying their luck. A small fresh of 3 or 4 inches entered the Feale yesterday Tuesday March 15th, but seemingly not enough to stir up any fish. The forecast is for more rain over the next couple of days so lets hope it will be sufficient to bring a good fresh for Paddy's day and beyond. Tight Lines!

ShRFB reports for Jim Robinson, Angling Guide Lower Shannon and for CASTLECONNELL SALMON FISHERY Tel Mob: 087 2339999  Landline: +353 61 453808  Web Address:   http://www.iol.ie/~jimrob

No sign of any salmon caught this week, water levels on the Shannon are now low for the time of year. We await a flood to freshen things up and get salmon on the move again.
